Out-of-Pocket Health Costs
Could be a Challenge for Retirees

Dr. Kathryn Votava, President of GOODCARE.com presented her research at the InvestmentNews Retirement Income Summit 2008 in New York City in March. One major point quoted by InvestmentNews was Dr. Votava's estimate of out-of-pocket healthcare costs in retirement range from $5,543 to $6,712 per person in 2008. That estimate was based on paying for routine Medicare premiums, Medigap premiums, copayments and other out-of-pocket costs such as eyewear and hearing aides. Dr. Votava's research showed that those out-of-pocket costs could easily be $27,500 or more per person annually in the next 20 years.

All of this emphasizes the need to plan for out-of-pocket healthcare costs in retirement financial plans. At GOODCARE.com we can help with this in a couple of ways.

1. Download our free Healthcare Out-of-Pocket Expenses Worksheet,
a detailed, functional spreadsheet to help you organize and track all your out-of-pocket healthcare expenses. And it does the math for you!

2. Call us @ 1-866-696-6543 for a consultation to help sort out your needs and focus on up-to-date information, lots of resources, planning tools and more to put each piece of your retirement healthcare puzzle together.

Ask Dr. Katy
Q: I've been self-employed for more than 20 years. Will I still be eligible and covered by Medicare at age 65?
A: As long as you or your spouse, if you are married, have paid into Social Security and Medicare during your self-employment for 40 quarters, or 10 years, you'll be eligible for Social Security and therefore for Medicare when you reach age 65. A word to the wise - check your Social Security statements for your status and that of your spouse, if you are married.
