One major point quoted by InvestmentNews was Dr. Votava's estimate of out-of-pocket healthcare costs in retirement range from $5,543 to $6,712 per person in 2008. That estimate was based on paying for routine Medicare premiums, Medigap premiums, copayments and other out-of-pocket costs such as eyewear and hearing aides. Dr. Votava's research showed that those out-of-pocket costs could easily be $27,500 or more per person annually in the next 20 years.
