Momentum Continues for New Magnet High School
Linda Dadona Hired as Principal
|
Overlooking the Connecticut River from East Hartford's banks, the classrooms of Goodwin College's
new magnet high school – the Connecticut River Academy – are in their final stages of preparation
for the first class of students to enter in August. The Academy is an interdistrict magnet high
school with an environmental studies theme that will utilize its access to the Connecticut River
to engage students in river ecology studies and other environmental explorations. More than 160
freshmen and sophomores will start at the Academy on August 30, coming from towns throughout
the region. Each year, an additional class of students will start at the Academy, eventually
filling grades 9 through 12. Through an early college model, these students will have opportunities
to earn college credit while still in high school.
Goodwin College has partnered with LEARN Regional Education Service Center to operate the Academy.
Together, Goodwin College and LEARN have hired Linda Dadona as principal, who officially started
in her new role on July 6. Dadona was most recently an administrator at Nathan Hale-Ray High School in East Haddam, serving as principal for the last six years. Prior to serving as principal, Dadona
taught high school mathematics at Conard High School in West Hartford and at Bacon Academy in Colchester,
and she was involved in a number of high school reform projects focusing on environmental studies.
Dadona received both a bachelor's and a master's degree in education from UCONN and a sixth-year
certificate in educational leadership from Sacred Heart University.

Canadian Quake Causes Campus Shakes
|
Wednesday, June 23, 1:41 p.m. It was a clear, sunny day in East Hartford — on the surface, a
perfect June afternoon. Below the surface, however, things were not as calm and serene. Moments
before, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake had sent tremors speeding outward from the epicenter nestled
beneath in the Ontario-Quebec border region of Canada. Four minutes, and 516 miles later, those
tremors rippled through the town of East Hartford and the Goodwin College River Campus. The
incident, which lasted approximately 20 - 30 seconds, was felt to varying degrees by witnesses
all over the College. Bryant Harrell, vice president, Physical Facilities & Information Technology,
has stated that there was no danger to students or staff at any time, and that there was no damage
to the building resulting from the quake.

Junior Envirothon at Goodwin College
|
The Junior Envirothon will be held at Goodwin's South Meadows July 17. The event is a one-day
competition for middle school students focused on natural resources problem‐solving. Students
are tested on their knowledge of Connecticut’s natural resources – aquatics, soils, forestry,
wildlife, and current environmental issues. The Connecticut River is the topic for 2010 – a
natural fit for Goodwin College.
The Goodwin College Junior Envirothon is made possible by a sponsorship from Environmental Services, Inc.,
who is also generously supporting the upcoming visit of the Half Moon with a Summa Cum Laude sponsorship.

Grants News
|
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration,
awarded a $150,000 grant through the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students program for eligible
students pursuing a degree in nursing. We received two awards: one for $101,046 and a second as
part of the President’s stimulus package for $48,954 for a total of $150,000. These awards exceed
all prior awards from this competitive pool. Last year, the College was awarded a total of $70,845.
In 2008 we received $27,874 and $7,000 in 2007.
The Hartford Wolf Pack Community Foundation has provided a $2,520 grant to help sustain the MOVE
basketball team. This year, 18 MOVE students have formed two intramural basketball teams through
the YMCA and compete twice a week for 11 weeks at a time. We are grateful to the Hartford Wolf
Pack for its generous donation.
A foundation that wishes to remain anonymous has awarded the College a $25,000 grant to create a
synchronous online tutoring program for our nursing students in Nursing 100, 110, 200, 210, and 220.
This is both an expansion and enhancement of the existing small group, face-to-face tutoring
currently offered to students in Nursing 110 and 200.
