Goodwin College 2009 graduate Edward Casares Jr. was sworn in as the Fire Chief for the City of Hartford on April 14. A 30-year veteran of the fire department, Casares formerly served as Chief Fire Marshall.

Nurse Pinning Ceremony
Graduates of Goodwin College’s nursing program — 49 in all for the academic session ending in April — received their pins April 22 at a ceremony underscoring their dedication to caring for human life as professional nurses. Marking the culmination of many months of rigorous study, the tradition serves to reinforce the strong bonds formed within the graduating class, as well as celebrating the entrance of the graduates into the healthcare field. Best of luck, and congratulations!

Lieberman Touts Energy Plan at Goodwin
Senator Joe Lieberman visited Goodwin College April 9 to participate in a Q & A session with environmental studies students. Lieberman is an advocate for cap and trade legislation designed to reduce carbon emissions.

ESL Grad's Green Building Attracts Accolades
Albanian political refugee and former Goodwin ESL student Artan Matrinaj was recently profiled by the Hartford Courant because of the unique, super-efficient solar-powered house he and his brother have built in East Hartford. Matrinaj works as a bus driver and taught himself green construction through internet research.

Tres Gatos
Connecticut artist Gilbert Boro is displaying his work "Tres Gatos" at the entrance to the River Campus. The donation represents a major addition to Goodwin’s sculpture garden concept, which will provide students and the community access to museum-quality installations on the riverfront.

Save these Dates! Golf Tournament and Half Moon
The 5th annual Goodwin College Foundation Golf Tournament will be held Wednesday, September 22, at Topstone Golf Course in South Windsor. To register, sponsor, or donate a raffle item, visit our sponsorship pages!

Summer Bridge
This summer will mark the fourth year of Goodwin’s Summer Bridge Program, a tuition-free, six-week program available to Hartford area graduating high school seniors and recent high school graduates. This rigorous program runs five days a week from July 7 - August 13. Upon successful completion of college level courses, students have the opportunity to earn up to 9 college credits. Weight Watchers Success
The Weight Watchers at Work group ended its first 12-week series with the 20 participants losing a total of 220.6 pounds!

The second 12 week series began on Tuesday, April 27. The series will run from April 27 – July 13, 2010. Meetings are held on Tuesdays at 10:50 a.m. in Room 411. If you are interested in joining, contact Stacy Routhier, Chair of the Personal Health and Wellness Committee at extension 6764.

In Brief
Lisa Zahina, a senior in the nursing program, received a Nightingale scholarship from VNA Health Care Inc.

Zoe Durkin presented two sessions at the Histotechnology Convention & Symposium in Mystic, CT, in April.

The admissions department welcomes Andrea Huggins to the College as an admissions officer.

Guy LaBella was honored with a service award from Hartford’s Shaheen Brazilian Cultural Center April 23.

Teresa Twomey will receive the Nightingale Award on behalf of Goodwin College on May 6. Teresa was nominated through a voting process completed by each graduating cohort of the nursing department.
