Goodwin Student Service Projects Earn Presidential Recognition
Goodwin College has been named to the 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement.

The recognition was in honor of two initiatives, both coordinated by Assistant Dean Joy Castello Butler. In 2008, twelve Goodwin College peer tutors gave more than 500 hours of service to the Career Advancement Pathways Program, developed by Goodwin College and supported by a partnership with the CT Campus Compact and Central Connecticut State University. The students provided foundational skills tutoring and mentorship for non-native residents who have attained Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification. Also, Goodwin College students collected over 3,000 toys, clothing, and food items for delivery to families in need in 2008. In total, Goodwin College students devoted over 4,000 hours to community service in 2008.

NEASC Site Visit Complete
A team of evaluators from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges wrapped up their visit this week, as part of the process of reaccredidation (the college earned initial accreditation in 2004). During a debriefing, the team noted the college’s energetic and student-centered faculty and staff, well-articulated program goals, and award-winning academic center. The team cautioned the college to ensure that adequate resources and staff are available to successfully transition to baccalaureate status and meet other college goals. The commission’s final report and accreditation decision is expected in late 2010.

The process has included a significant investment of effort on the part of faculty, staff, and students, particularly in the preparation of the 100 page self-study report. VP for Institutional Effectiveness Janet Jefford expresses her thanks to all who participated, and also thanks everyone for welcoming the NEASC team to campus.

Phonathon
A phonathon is more than just fundraising! A few times each year, Goodwin College volunteers call alumni and friends to:

Update contact information to ensure alumni receive important information from the college...

Remind alumni about services provided by the college, like career services and library access that remain available to alumni...

Provide information on ways to support the college, including our "Take Your Seat" campaign. Alumni have already pledged or donated over $3,000 for student scholarships in 2010. Increased alumni giving, even from small donations, can help the college qualify for foundation support.

Thank you to all who participated in the March 2 phonathon session. If you would like to volunteer for the next phonathon session, Wednesday, March 24, 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. please contact Guy LaBella at 860.727.6948 or glabella@goodwin.edu
