Recovering After Accident
Goodwin nursing graduate Allison Evans Jones, a member of the class of 2006, is recovering after being injured while coming to the aid of another motorist January 24 in Kent. Nursing Department Chair Jan Costello reports that though Allison faces a lengthy recuperation, she is doing well and is in good spirits. The thoughts and prayers of members of the Goodwin Community are much appreciated, Costello said.

Hartford Mag Gives Goodwin an 'A'
Out of 26 Hartford area projects and initiatives, only two got 'A's in 2009, according to Hartford Magazine. Which two? UConn sports, and Goodwin College. Wrote the editors; "Open just 10 years, Goodwin College has become a thriving institution."

Nature Walks This Weekend
Goodwin College and the Great Meadows Conservation Trust are leading two nature walks on February 6 and 7. Jim Woodworth from the Great Meadows Conservation Trust and Bruce Morton, director of Goodwin's Environmental Studies program, will lead the walks.

On Saturday, February 6, the group will meet at 10:00 a.m. in Wethersfield to explore the 300+ acre property newly acquired by Goodwin College, along with the Trust's Hale Easement.

On Sunday, February 7, the group will meet at 1:00 p.m. to walk through the Wilson-Carvalho and Hockanum Meadows parcels in East Hartford, south of Goodwin College's campus along the Connecticut River.

Goodwin's Environmental Studies students conduct research in these areas. For more details about these walks and directions to the meeting places, visit www.gmct.org/programs.htm.

Students Raise over $1,000 for Haiti Relief
Goodwin students raised over $1,000 for Haiti earthquake relief through a bake sale fundraiser held on January 21. The money supports Save the Children and The American Red Cross.

Submit Your Accomplishments for the Annual Report
We invite faculty, staff, and students to send your accomplishments to communications@goodwin.edu for consideration in this year's Annual Report. Please send accomplishments that happened between October 1, 2008, and December 31, 2009. We may not be able to include all of the accomplishments in the Annual Report, but we will share this information with the college community in other ways. Accomplishments include awards, honors, publications, and other noteworthy achievements.

Please submit your accomplishments by Monday, February 8, 2010.

Students: Don't Forget the FAFSA Deadline
To ensure that you will be able to register for May classes, you must file your 2010-2011 FAFSA by Friday, February 19, 2010.

If you complete the application by the deadline, you have the opportunity to enter the FAFSA raffle for a chance to win one of three prizes:

The Café hours are:
Mon. - Thurs. from 7:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Fri. from 7:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Goodwin College Hosts Fuel Cell Roundtable
Continuing a series of energy-focused events at the college, Congressman John B. Larson led a forum with presentations by Connecticut's hydrogen and fuel cell industry and panel discussion with Connecticut legislators, agency representatives, and other executives January 22. The forum focused on Connecticut's hydrogen and fuel cell industry, energy management, environmental protection, job creation, and economic development. The event was sponsored by the Connecticut Hydrogen-Fuel Cell Coalition (CHFCC).

Connecticut River Academy Magnet High School Application Deadline is February 10
The Connecticut River Academy at Goodwin College is an early college magnet high school with an environmental science focus that includes river studies; land, water and air quality; plant and animal growth; human ecology; and renewable energy. For 2010-11 and 2011-12, the Academy will operate in a temporary site on campus next to the college. By the start of the 2012-13 school year, a new $57 million building will open on Goodwin College's campus along the banks of the Connecticut River.

The Connecticut River Academy is currently accepting applications for the 2010-2011 school year through the Regional School Choice Office (RSCO).
  • Only students entering 9th and 10th grade in fall 2010 may apply at this time.
  • Students may apply to the Academy from any community in the area.
  • Acceptance is through an open random lottery.
  • Preference is given to siblings applying to enter the Academy.

Goodwin College Travel Series: China
Ms. Alicia Cornelio, one of our librarians, just returned from spending two weeks traveling in China, as well as three weeks in Australia and ten days in New Zealand. On Tuesday, February 9, from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., come see pictures, hear her impressions, and enjoy a simple Chinese meal.

Scholarship Fund Update
Approximately $85,000 in scholarship funding has been raised by the Goodwin College Foundation so far this year toward an overall goal of over $200,000. Here's how:

Weight Watchers Classes Start
Employees are starting a Weight Watchers at Work program this week, coordinated by the Personal Health Management Committee. MOVE Awards
Goodwin College will recognize the achievements of several MOVE Fellows on Tuesday, February 16, 2010, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Community Room. The MOVE program seeks to promote college completion among young men of color and others overcoming obstacles in the pursuit of higher education.
