Congratulations to Edward Casares, Jr. '08,
Hartford's Next Fire Chief
The City of Hartford announced November 20 that Edward Casares, Jr., a 2008 Goodwin College graduate, will be appointed Fire Chief in April 2010. Casares, a graduate of the College's Homeland Security program, currently serves as Fire Marshall. He was recently profiled in the fall/winter issue of Goodwin Magazine. T. Boone Pickens Makes Case for Energy Reform
Texas billionaire T. Boone Pickens joined Congressman John Larson for a forum on energy reform at Goodwin College November 24. Pickens, a former oil man, has launched a nationwide campaign promoting a transition to natural gas, wind, solar, and other energy sources to reduce reliance on oil.

Diaper Giveaway
Through a partnership with My Little Star Baby Products, Inc., students were eligible to receive free diapers on Wednesday, December 9, and Thursday, December 10, during certain hours. The goal of the giveaway was to provide some welcome relief to parents feeling financially squeezed through the holidays (and who isn't?). Diapers will be sold in the Bookstore next semester for $3.75 a package.

Employees who contribute through Feeling Good About Goodwin can apply contributions to name their auditorium seat. Be sure to participate – even if you don't want a seat – to be included on the list for the President's "Thank You Hour," now being planned for February. Your participation does make a difference! Holiday Toy Drive
A student-sponsored Holiday Toy Drive is going on now through December 19. Items needed are new unwrapped toys, new clothing, new winter jackets, and new shoes or boots. Donations are being taken in the lobby.

Other News
A new student information system enabling online registration is being implemented. The transition is set to be complete by November 2010.

The Campus "Cantina" is now under construction on the second floor, and the bookstore is expanding.

The Goodwin College ConnCAP program has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the George A. & Grace L. Long Foundation, Bank of America and Mr. Alan Parker, Co-Trustees. ConnCAP is a college readiness program for high school juniors and seniors.

The alumni bus trip to New York City December 5 was a success. Over 80 alumni, students, staff, and family members took part.

Reminder to Goodwin Employees: Community Day will be held January 4, 2009, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Book buyback at the campus bookstore will be held:
Dec. 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Dec. 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Dec. 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Dec. 19 from 9:00 a.m. to noon
Books for the January class session can be picked up beginning Dec. 14.

The Writing Center helps students from brainstorming an idea to polishing and perfecting the final draft. Located in the Learning Center (Room 133, River Campus), the Writing Center is open Monday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on a "drop-in" basis and on weekends by appointment. Appointments may be scheduled either in person, by telephone (860.913.2064), by email (writingcenter@goodwin.edu), or text message (860.816.1848).

The Early Childhood Education Club book fair raised funds for Willowbrook School in East Hartford for literacy materials.

Please support Goodwin College professor Fred Fitzgerald in his quest to become Health Net Senior Star. Vote by viewing, rating, and commenting on his performance which is available here.

Goodwin College hosted the annual meeting of the Connecticut Association of Conservation Districts. Guests included USDA NRCS State Conservationist Douglas Zehner, and state DEP Commissioner Amey Marrella.

December 17 marks one year anniversary of the move to the River Campus, with the issuance of Certificates of Occupancy for the 1st and 2nd floors.

Thanks to all who donated to this year's Thanksgiving Food Drive. Joy Castello Butler and Goodwin College students delivered baskets of food and turkeys to several local families on the eve of Thanksgiving.

The annual Feast of Many Lands potluck will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 16 in the Community Room. Please call Joy Castello Butler or Heather Bell at 860.727.2043 if you would like to bring a dish.
