Connecticut School Counselors Spend a Friday on River Jaunt with Goodwin College
Educators
and school counselors from over 50 high schools boarded the Mystique river boat May
30 for a charter voyage along Goodwin's River Campus land. Guests were treated to first-class
service from Lady Katherine Cruises and Goodwin
College, enjoying a lunch accompanied
by live Caribbean steel-drum music.
Goodwin College President Mark E. Scheinberg addressed the group about Goodwin's growing academic programs, including the upcoming
addition of baccalaureate degree programs and an environmental science program
taking advantage of the college's sprawling riverfront properties.
Nick Lentino, Dan Noonan, and the
Admissions Department staff deserve great credit for coordinating the fun
and informative event. |

Nursing Computer Lab Opens at 403 Main Street
On May 28, students, staff, and local press gathered to mark the opening of a state-of-the-art computer technology lab for the nursing program at 403 Main Street, East Hartford.
The new lab features 40 laptop computers, two smart boards, and software allowing students to simulate medical treatment planning. The lab was funded in large part through a $78,913 grant funded jointly by the Office of Workforce
Competitiveness, the Connecticut Department of Public Health, and the Connecticut
Department of Higher Education. The funding also allowed the college to add education consultant Eleanor Chester to the nursing program team. Chester will offer tutoring and other educational services.

Attention Graduates: Cap & Gown Pickup is Today
Graduates participating in the June 12 Commencement Ceremony must pick up their caps and gowns Wednesday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Burnside Avenue campus. If the weather is good, distribution will take place outdoors at the gazebo. In the event of rain, the caps and gowns may be picked up inside the lobby of the academic building.
Certificate recipients should bring $40 for the cap and gown. Those planning to pick up a cap and gown for another person should bring a note from that person and identification. |
May Marked Beginning of Alumni Events
A performance by a renowned flamenco ensemble was the site of the Alumni Association's first social of the year on May 8 at the East Hartford Cultural Center. Attendees enjoyed hearty hors d'oeuvres followed by great music from the band. Alumni also received complementary tickets to a concert featuring 80s rockers Ambrosia courtesy of the Cultural Center and the Alumni Relations Office at Goodwin College. The Alumni Association will announce other events this summer by email and through the Goodwin College News Update. |

Career Academy Alum Christine Adorno Honored as 'Workforce Star'
After a medical event required rehabilitation and interfered
with her ability to carry out her duties as a Registered Nurse, Christine
Adorno faced a stark choice - she could try to make do on disability payments,
or she could try to change course, retraining herself in a new field.
For
Adorno, the answer came when a CT Works caseworker told her about Goodwin College's
Career Academy for Service Excellence. Adorno wasted
no time in enrolling, and soon earned a reputation as an outstanding student. Within
a month of her August 2007 graduation from the academy, Adorno was hired as a
Front Desk Representative at the Marriot. Since, she's been promoted to a
position at the concierge desk and was praised by her boss as "an asset to the
organization."
On June 19 Adorno will be honored with a Workforce Star Award
from Capital Workforce Partners. The award recognizes
those "who have made the commitment to achieve their goals in the workforce -
regardless of challenge and circumstance," according to Sandy Rodriguez,
Communications Director for Capital Workforce Partners.
Congratulations to
Christine Adorno for this well-deserved recognition. |
