Rebuilding Together Goodwin Employees, Students Spend a Saturday 'Rebuilding Together'
Forty students and employees gathered early in the morning on Saturday, April 27, to help an elderly and disabled Manchester homeowner restore his property. The volunteers spent the morning raking and removing years worth of leaves and debris, planting flowers, cleaning gutters, and removing downed branches. The effort was part of National Rebuilding Day (formerly called Christmas in April), and Goodwin's team was coordinated by Sandy Pearce, the college's webmaster. Thanks, Sandy, for organizing this inspirational event, and thank you to all the volunteers!

Graduating Nurses Receive Pins
The ninth class of graduating nurses - 31 in all - received their nursing pins at a ceremony April 24. The evening was an emotional one for the graduates and onlookers alike, representing the completion of at least five 15-week sessions of demanding academic work. After obtaining their Registered Nurse designations in the coming months, the graduates will find jobs at hospitals and healthcare centers throughout the state, helping to ease a critical shortage of nurses in Connecticut. Congratulations to the graduates from the entire Goodwin community, as well as a heartfelt thanks to program chair Jan Costello and the faculty and staff of the nursing program for their commitment and hard work.
AT&T "Excelerator" Lab Unveiled
Thanks to the generosity of AT&T, students can now enjoy the benefits of an upgraded computer lab, complete with 18 new desktops and a "smart" interactive whiteboard. The lab, named the AT&T Excelerator Lab after the $15,000 grant that funded the upgrades, is currently located at the Burnside Avenue campus but will be shifted to a new home at the River Campus later this year.

Goodwin's Communications Team Attends Crisis Forum
In the event of an emergency on or near campus, communication is the key to keeping everyone safe and informed. Communications Manager Kara Simmers and Coordinator Lee Sawyer attended a meeting April 24 with professionals from colleges and universities throughout the state to discuss the latest technology in emergency notification, as well as strategies to ensure that the right information makes it to the right people as quickly as possible. The Facilities Department is currently evaluating an emergency notification system for possible implementation in the near future.

Student Council's Humanitarian Project Recognized
The Student Council's Hunger and Disaster Project recently earned a nomination for a student group award from the Connecticut Department of Higher Education. The project, which provided relief for a flood-devastated region in Guyana, South America, as well as assisting two families in need in East Hartford, was recognized at the Connecticut Higher Education Community Service Awards ceremony on April 1. The students organized fundraisers and set up collection bins for canned goods, books, art supplies, and clothing.

Volunteering Opportunity for Students
Connecticut Foodshare has set aside Saturday, May 24, as the day on which Goodwin College students will volunteer to sort and pack produce for the state's needy residents. Students who need to complete volunteer hours are encouraged to contact Assistant Dean of Student Services Joy Castello Butler to sign up for the event. Students should arrive at Hartford's Regional Market (off Airport Road) at 7:45 a.m. The activities will last from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
Peer Tutors Sought
Members of the faculty are encouraged to recommend students who have done exceptionally well in their classes and who may be interested in participating in a training session during the first week of the new academic session.  Names of students may be forwarded to Joy Castello Butler.  Students may also call 860-727-6712 for more information about this valuable service. An hourly stipend of $10.00 will be paid to tutors who are approved for federal work-study.  Ideally, students will be expected to commit to 6 - 10 hours per week.
