EARTHWORM FACTS
Worms
Did you know that worms do some very important work in the soil?  By burrowing through the dirt, they create a drainage system and allow air into the soil.  They also help turn over the soil, and bring organic matter from the surface down into the soil.  They even help fertilize the soil.  All of these things help healthy plants to grow, which means more food for animals and for us!
Greetings!

You've been asking, and it is official - The Mad Science ONE Day Rocket Camp at the Pima Air and Space Museum is set and ready to go!

SCIENTIST OF THE MONTH
Dr. WaksmanSelman Waksman (July 22, 1888)   Through his research on organisms that live in the soil and their decomposition, Dr. Waksman discovered Streptomycin, which was the first effective treatment for Tuberculosis.  His research led to the discovery of at least 20 other antibiotics.  He even came up with the word "antibiotic".

Dr. Waksman was a professor at Rutgers University for forty years, and the money made on the licensing of his patents established the Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers.  Selman Waksman was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1952.
