Dr. Janet Harris

Retrospective from Retiring Director: JAN HARRIS

I will be retiring in August after a 35-year career that has included four years at SDSU, eight years at Cal State Los Angeles, 18 years at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and five years at a variety of other institutions early in my career. It has been an honor to serve as Director of the School of ENS for the past four years, working with a group of very bright and hard-working faculty who are student-centered and passionate about their programs.

Message from the Incoming Director: FRED KOLKHORST
It is an exciting honor to have been appointed by Dean Gattas to serve as the School's next Director. It is also a wonderful opportunity to lead such a talented faculty. ENS has much to be proud about. Over the next several years, we will be moving on several initiatives. One of the most critical will be to more closely integrate our various academic programs.  Another initiative is to continue improving the connections between the School and you, our alums and friends. We want your help to making our programs even stronger.

Anne Rosser is Recipient of the Meritorious Achievement Award at the San Diego County High School Coaching Legends 11th Annual Induction Banquet in November 2009.
Anne Rosser was a very active professional throughout her physical education teaching career in San Diego, much of which was at Madison High School. During that time she was a leader in the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, as well as the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and she has continued this work during her retirement. She has also been an active SDSU alum, especially lending support to the College of Arts and Letters programs in China. She was also instrumental in helping us make contact with many of the 1950s Kinesiology alums (at the time, of course, the major was titled Physical Education) who attended this year's campus tour and Aztec baseball outing in April 2010.

Changes Underway in Peterson Gym
The "gym" moniker in Peterson Gym is becoming less apt now that two former gym spaces are being renovated to become classrooms that will open for the first time in Fall 2010. With the tightening of the California budget, large classroom space is at a premium. The gym space that for years served as the site for Aztec Gymnastics under the able leadership of Ed Franz, and then morphed to become the main classroom/gym combo for our physical education pedagogy program, will soon be a classroom for 213 students. The upper balcony on the east side of the main gym is being split into two classrooms for 125 students and 45 students, respectively. The new gym space for our physical education pedagogy program is located in the upper balcony on the west side of the main gym, and this has been renovated with a permanent wall between the balcony and the main gym, adequate equipment storage, basketball hoops on the walls, and a refinished floor.

David Kahan Completes Sabbatical Work in Local Schools
David Kahan spent his year-long sabbatical engaged in three projects. First, as part of the City Heights Collaborative professional development group, he twice surveyed 700 inner-city middle school students regarding their activity preferences and attitudes about dressing for physical education. In another study centered around a virtual walk from San Diego to Saudi Arabia, he tested a faith-based pedometer intervention--steps to Umra--among middle schoolers at San Diego County's only Islamic day school.
