Message from Dr. McLean...
We have had an excellent start to the school year. It is hard to believe that we are already two months into the first semester. Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held the evening of Wednesday, October 24 and all day on Friday, October 26. The schedule is a little different this year because of Thursday night athletic events.
I continue to be extremely pleased with the West Way program. This program continues to have a positive impact on our students and teachers. West Way is designed to specifically spell out expectations regarding how to be safe, responsible and respectful. The teachers and administration look for ways to reinforce positive student behaviors. This program has been implemented over the last three years and data has shown fewer suspensions and expulsions from SM West. The teachers and students are to be congratulated for working hard to make sure SM West is a SAFE place where students are taught to be RESPECTUL and RESPONSIBLE.
It truly is a great time to be a Viking. Our performing groups such as band, choir and orchestra are doing very well and preparing for fall and winter concerts. Our parent support groups are active and helping to provide the resources our coaches and sponsors need to ensure that our extra-curricular programs are successful. Our PTSA members are busy providing valuable assistance to students and staff. Being involved is an important part of the educational program at SM West. I am proud to report that over 800 of our 1820 students are involved with an athletic team, extra-curricular activity or club at SM West.
As we move towards the November election, I hope as parents you're taking advantage of the time to talk with your students about the election process. Share with your high school student the thought process you're going through to make a decision about whom you're going to vote for. Emphasize the importance of participating in each election. Having a voice in selecting our political leaders is a right we must never take for granted. Please take advantage of this very teachable moment.
Yes, there are many, many wonderful things happening at SM West each year. Do you ever stop and wonder why so many good things happen at our school? The answer is really pretty simple. It's the people. Students that come from homes that value education and parents willing to make sacrifices of time and money to ensure their child and others have what is needed for each student to excel. Teachers that care about students and develop positive relationships with them make the difference between mediocrity and excellence. Teachers that are willing to put in the time and energy to improve their skills and working hard to make their lessons exciting and intellectually challenging and parents not willing to settle for mediocrity from their children or the school they attend.
SM West is a great school and I am very proud to serve as its principal. We should never forget that it takes good people working together to make SM West great. We must always strive for excellence and never settle for second. Remember, at SM West - Together Everyone Achieves More.
This year we are again fortunate to have members of the Class of 2013 being recognized as Semi-finalists and commended scholars for their performance on the SAT taken during their junior year at SM West. This fall our semifinalists will go through a process to determine how many will become finalist. I am proud to recognize Erin Lanigan, Julia Marques-Uppman, Keiko Suzuki and Garrett Viets as Semi-finalists in the National Merit program. I am also proud to recognize the following students for being recognized as commended in the National Merit program: Ben Hower, Sierra Lekie, Maggie Meyer and Brittany Porter. These students and their families should be extremely proud of this wonderful accomplishment. The school will be hosting a reception in November to honor these students, their parents and teachers.
Always remember - WEST is the BEST!

Transfer Request Procedures
Students may request to transfer to another Shawnee Mission high school. The application deadline is January 5, 2013, to request a transfer for the 2013-2014 school year. Requests will not be honored after that date. Transfer request forms may be obtained from any school office in the district. Students must re-apply when changing levels - elementary to middle school and middle school to high school. Requests for transfers need not be renewed annually once a student is attending a school, but shall be made subject to annual review.
Once a transfer is approved, students may remain at that school for the duration provided they are in good standing academically, behaviorally, and in regard to attendance. A transfer may be rescinded at any time if a student fails to meet the requirements. District guidelines require that students attending on an approved transfer must maintain satisfactory grades (for secondary students a minimum of 2.0 grade point average), maintain a minimum of 95 percent attendance record, and maintain an acceptable discipline record.

College Admission Testing
SM West School Code: 172-773
Taking the ACT and/or the SAT is an important step in the college admission process. Juniors should begin looking at test dates and determine when they will take the tests during their junior year. The next two tests dates are listed here but all tests dates for the year can be found at each website.
Note: ACT CHANGES
This year there are changes to the ACT procedures that everyone should be aware. The main change is that students must upload a picture into the system and then upon arrival at the testing center of the day of testing, that picture is checked with the student's photo ID (they are not mandating this on the September test, but it will be required from that point forward).
Students will be required to have the following items in order to take the test (no exceptions):
- Admission ticket (in the past they did not have to have it), after the student registers they will be prompted to print their admission ticket;
- Photo ID, school ID or driver's license; (no personal recognition anymore or yearbook photos)
- Students will be required to take the ACT test at the location that they are registered. Test center locations changes will not be allowed.

SMEF 2012 Annual Fall Breakfast
For the third year in a row the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation posted record attendance at its annual Fall Breakfast. Over 950 advocates of public education, including 80 corporate sponsors, gathered at the Overland Park Convention Center and raised $141,000 in support of public education in Shawnee Mission schools.
In his State of the District Address "Defying Gravity," Superintendent Dr. Gene Johnson shared news of student and faculty achievement in spite of the funding challenges of the last few years. Volunteers and district partners who already support Shawnee Mission were thanked and others reminded that continued excellence requires corporate and community involvement and action by concerned individuals.
In an environment where local control of school funding is restricted by state government, Dr. Johnson stressed the value the Foundation adds to defying gravity. SMEF offers a place for K-12 Shawnee Mission advocates to make charitable, tax-deductible contributions providing direct support of SMSD programs. 100% of contributions to SMEF stay in the Shawnee Mission district.
The event finale "Defying Gravity," from the Broadway musical Wicked, featured the talents of 250 students representing Mill Creek and Rising Star Elementary choirs, SM East Chamber Choir, SM Northwest Chamber Singers and the SM South Jazz Band. The performance brought together the District and SMEF's rally call to the community to come together and commit to excellence in the face of obstacles.
Shawnee Mission Medical Center and Mainstreet Credit Union were presenting sponsors and Capitol Federal was a lead sponsor. The breakfast was held on September 13, 2012 at the Overland Park Convention Center.
The breakfast program featured students from various academic and extra-curricular groups. Featured in this photo are Shawnee Mission West art students, Navelin De Dios and Krislyn Roberts, under direction of their art teacher, Luan Taylor.

Viking Athletics
W inter sports will be here before you know it so do not wait to get your physical turned in. A physical for this school year must be dated May 1, 2012 or after. Winter Sports begin November 12. In order to be able to participate in tryouts, a complete physical form and a concussion and head injury information release form must be on file in the athletic department by Friday, November 9.
Waiting to hand required forms in the day winter practices and tryouts begin will delay eligibility to participate.
No student can participate without these documents being on file with the athletic department. All physical and concussion forms can be handed in directly to the athletic secretary.
Helpful hint; it is always a good idea to keep a copy of your child's physical in case you need it for something else.

After countless early morning and Tuesday evening rehearsals, the Marching Band has finally gotten the entire new show on the field.
