Message from Dr. McLean...
The faculty and staff at West want to extend a belated Happy New Year to our parents and community members. It's hard to believe that 2012 is here and we are half way through the 2011-2012 school year. I hope each of you had a wonderful winter break. As we begin the new year, it's time to begin thinking about next school year with regards to selection of classes for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Choose Wisely This month our students will be given the opportunity to select courses for next school year. I can't over emphasize the importance of students making choices that are carefully thought out and reflect the student's future goals and aspirations.
As a parent, get involved with the enrollment process. Look at the SMSD course offerings found in the High School Program Planning Guide and talk with your student. The Guide can be found on the districts website under the student section. As you consider next year's schedule, please look at the AP and honors program and encourage your student to step up and meet a higher standard of performance. My experience at West has been that when a student makes the commitment to attend class, study, and manage their time, they are successful in the honors and AP classes. The rewards from taking the honors and AP courses are immense. Not only is the curriculum more challenging, but the development of self-discipline and higher level intellectual skills will serve them well in college and their adult life.
The investment you and your child are making now in their education will have a direct impact on their future career opportunities and earning power. Please get involved in this important decision making opportunity regarding the classes your child will take next year. If you have questions don't hesitate to contact your child's counselor at 993-7830.
Study Hall With this year's new daily schedule, many students have expressed a concern about having time to get assignments, test preparation and class projects completed. I would recommend that students might want to enroll in a study hall. Study halls provide a student with additional time to get homework completed. Many of our students are involved with extracurricular activities, have jobs and need the resource of time to reduce stress that comes from the rigor of academic requirements.
Common Core Curriculum If you're not familiar with the Common Core Curriculum (CCC), I want to encourage you to do some research on this topic. The CCC is becoming the basis of what State Departments of Education around the nation are implementing and expecting local boards of education to adopt as their district's curriculum. The CCC is a K-12 curriculum that sets the standards for students and has currently been adopted by 44 states, including the State of Kansas. The standards are very rigorous and require students to demonstrate math, reading and writing skills. SMSD is in the process of making adjustments in the curriculum to better prepare students to meet these higher standards.
Shawnee Mission West Alumni Fund I am often asked, "How can my family can help others at West". As part of our 50th anniversary, we have partnered with the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation to establish the Shawnee Mission West Alumni Fund. Donations made to this fund are tax deductible and SMEF will monitor and oversee the funds. Once we have $10,000.00 in the account, funds will be available to the school to help students and staff. We will be encouraging alumni to consider giving back to West by making a contribution to the West Alumni Fund. Thank you for your continued support. As parents, please look for ways to get involved with your student's education and become an active part of the SM West High School family.

FOOD SERVICE...Did you know...
Did you know that breakfast is available each day at your student's school?
Breakfast is a good indicator of doing well at school. New research from the Food Research and Action Center shows that school breakfast: * decreases risk of food insecurity; * may protect against childhood obesity; * improves children's academic performance, whereas skipping breakfast and experiencing hunger impair development and learning
If it is difficult to fit breakfast into your morning routine, breakfast is available in 31 elementary schools and all middle and high schools. A student must choose a full portion of at least three of the four components to receive a reimbursable school breakfast. The components include: entrée, toast, fruit/juice, and milk. If your school does not have a breakfast program, crackers and milk will be available to any student, regardless of ability to pay, who is hungry upon arrival at school in the morning. These items will be available at the child's school.
The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district's website at:

Juniors
Now is the time to get started on college research and planning. You should be working on the following things this semester to prepare for your senior year:
- Register for college exams. Take the ACT or SAT at least once, preferably twice this semester.
- Visit college campuses. Talk to graduates and current students from schools to determine where you will want to apply next fall. Explore colleges you are interested in attending on the internet. You should settle on 4 or 5 schools you will be applying to next year.
- Work hard on your grades; junior year grades are extremely important for college admissions. Your grade point average at the end of your junior year will be used as a determining factor in your ability to be admitted to colleges.

Gear Up for Financial Aid
From ACT News You Can UseJanuary is fast approaching and that means it's time for seniors to seriously consider college financial aid for the upcoming school year. In addition to private scholarships, federal financial aid is available for students attending two-year or four-year, public or private, career or trade colleges and schools. The aid is intended to cover expenses such as tuition, room and board, books, other supplies and transportation. Most students receive the aid based on financial need. Students can receive federal financial aid in the form of grants, loans or work-study. Grants are financial awards that do not have to be repaid. Examples include Pell Grants and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants. Loans are money you borrow and must repay. The best loans are those that are subsidized by the federal or your state government. These generally carry lower interest rates. Work-study provides jobs, usually on campus, so students can help pay for education expenses. To find out about federal financial aid programs and your rights and responsibilities under these programs, read "Funding Education Beyond High School: The Guide to Federal Student Aid" from the U.S. Department of Education at studentaid.ed.gov/guide. You also can request a free paper copy by contacting the U.S. Department of Education at 1-800-4-FED-AID. The guide is available in both English and Spanish. Also, be sure to check out the ACT website at actstudent.org/finaid. You'll find a good financial aid overview in easy-to-understand language, plus a list of resources to contact for more information on loans, scholarships and government programs. How to apply for financial aidIf you're planning to attend college next fall, January is the time to file your Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. Information from the FAFSA is used to determine your eligibility for the federal student aid programs mentioned above-grants, loans and work-study. You can get the FAFSA: * online at www.fafsa.ed.gov* from your school counselor * from a college financial aid office * from a local public library * from the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) Make sure you check financial aid deadlines! The FAFSA will list deadlines for federal and state aid. Also check the requirements at the colleges you're interested in applying to. Some require additional financial aid forms.

AP Testing
AP testing will take place the week of May 7th and May 14th at Shawnee Mission West. The cost for each test will be $87 and the payment deadline is March 8th. This is a firm deadline as tests must be ordered ahead of time. Mr. Davis will be visiting AP classes at the end of February with registration information. Students will then bring their enrollment sheet and a check to the Counseling Office to cover the cost of all tests being taken.
There are several reasons students should consider taking AP tests: * The AP test must be taken to receive the AP designation on the transcript. * A student may earn college credit and/or advanced placement at most colleges and universities depending on the score received. * A student may be recognized for AP Scholar Awards. * Students gain valuable experience in rigorous exams (SAT, ACT, MCAT, LSAT, GRE).

The grand marshal was David White, an Overland Park city council member. The annual dodge ball tournament was a big hit. Jake Vance headed the 20 team tournament. All the profits went to the Johnson County Christmas Bureau. The blood drive took place in November. 165 units were donated by West students and public participants. A big thank you goes out to the Red Cross and the students who helped with the event. StuCo finished up a successful can drive collecting 6,500 cans and raising $2,100 for the Johnson County Christmas Bureau. Mr. Taylor's class won the first block competition collecting the most cans. Mrs. Flurry's and Mrs. Tritt's classes were close runner-ups. Events this semester: WPA, Women Pay All, Sweetheart Dance will be February 18.
