MESSAGE FROM DR. McLEAN
We have had an excellent start to the school year. Our official enrollment is 1,819 which is down slightly from last year. I am extremely pleased with our West Way program and the positive impact it has been having on our students and staff. The West Way is designed to specifically spell out for students the faculty's expectations regarding how to be safe, responsible and respectful. The teachers and administration look for ways to reinforce positive student behaviors. We are beginning to see more students buy into the concept and believe that the West Way is the Right Way. It truly is a great time to be a Viking. Our performing groups such as band, choir and orchestra are doing very well and preparing for fall and winter concerts. The drama department is working on the fall play, Wait Until Dark. Our PTSA members are busy providing valuable assistance to students and staff. And last but not least, our athletic teams have been having a good fall. Over 800 students are involved in extra curricular activities. Yes, there are many, many, wonderful things happening at West. Do you ever stop and wonder why so many good things happen at our school? The answer is really pretty simple. It's the people. Students come from homes that value education. Parents are willing to make sacrifices of time and money to ensure their child and others have what is needed for each student to excel. Teachers that care about students and develop positive relationships with them make the difference between mediocrity and excellence. Teachers that are willing to put in the time and energy to improve their skills and working hard to make their lessons exciting and intellectually challenging. All these people make the difference between mediocrity and excellence. West is a great school and I am very proud to serve as its principal. We should never forget that it takes all these good people working together that make West what it is. Please encourage members of the West family to strive for excellence and never settle for second best. If each of us always strives to do our best then West will continue to be a great school serving a great community. Transfer Policy for the 10-11 School Year Again next school year every high school in the district will be open for transfer. The application deadline is February 1, 2010. Students applying for a transfer to another high school after February 1, 2010 will most likely be denied. Additional transfer information is available in this newsletter. National Merits at West West is excited to announce the Semi Finalists and Commended in the Class of 2010. There are ten students being recognized for their performance on the SAT test taken during their junior year at West. I am proud to recognize the following students as Semi-finalists in the National Merit Program: Leigha Empson, Rebecca Martin, Emily Miller and Danny Neely. This fall our semifinalists will go through a process to determine how many will become finalists. I am also proud to announce the following students as Commended in the National Merits Program: Alex Burnett, Kathryn Byrd, Kayla Eddins, Jessie Hardesty, Nathan Heng and Cory Newman. These students and their families should be extremely proud of this wonderful accomplishment. The school will be hosting a reception in November to honor these students, their parents and teachers. Always remember - WEST is the BEST!

Financial Aid Overview at SM Northwest - Wednesday, Nov. 18, 7 p.m.
Junior and senior students and their parents - if you want assistance in helping to understand financial aid for post secondary education, Shawnee Mission Northwest High School is offering a Financial Aid Evening on Wednesday, November 18th at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.
This worthwhile evening will be moderated by Perry Diehm, Chief Financial Aid Officer at Mid America Nazarene University. Mr. Diehm will give an overview on the FAFSA. The FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is the form the federal government uses to determine your eligibility for student aid. This aid includes grants, scholarships, work study and loans to help pay for college. The form collects financial and demographic information. In some cases the form is required to fill out prior to receiving any other monetary funding.
Enrollment for 2010-2011
Choosing classes for next year is just around the corner. In January, students will be given enrollment materials according to the following schedule. Students have about one week to look over the materials with parents and then have them ready to return when their class visits the Counseling Office. If students and/or parents would like to meet with the academic counselor to discuss enrollment planning, appointments in November and December are encouraged as January is a very busy time for the counselors with enrollment presentations and visits to middle schools.

Finalize enrollment with counselor Jan. 25/26 (in US History classes)
- Sophomores - Materials distributed Jan. 19/20
Finalize enrollment with counselor Jan. 27/28 (in Eng.10 classes)

Sophomore Workshop
You and your sophomore student are invited to a sophomore workshop that will be held on January 6, 2010 (Wednesday) at Shawnee Mission West High School. The workshop will be held in the cafeteria from 6:30-8:00 p.m. No pre-registration will be required.
The workshop is intended to introduce students and parents to the career planning process. The workshop will utilize the results of the students' ACT Plan assessment in addition to providing activities that assist students in identifying their vocational skills and interests. By participating in this workshop, your student will gain valuable knowledge that may serve as a foundation for making informed career, educational and life decisions.
If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact me at 913-993-7834 or e-mail me at laurahicks@smsd.org. We look forward to seeing you and assisting you and your student in the great adventure of career/life planning.
Transfer Request Procedures
Beginning with the this school year, all high schools are open to transfers. However, the application deadline is February 1, 2010, to requests a transfer for the 2010-2011 school year. Requests will not be honored after that date. Transfer request forms may be obtained from any school office in the district. Students must re-apply when changing levels - elementary to middle school and middle school to high school. Requests for transfers need not be renewed annually once a student is attending a school, but shall be made subject to annual review.
Once a transfer is approved, students may remain at that school for the duration provided they are in good standing academically, behaviorally, and in regard to attendance. A transfer may be rescinded at any time if a student fails to meet the requirements. District guidelines require that students attending on an approved transfer must maintain satisfactory grades (for secondary students a minimum of 2.0 grade point average), maintain a minimum of 95 percent attendance record, and maintain an acceptable discipline record.
College Planning
Have you taken the ACT yet? The deadline to take the December 12th ACT test is Friday, November 6th. Register at www.actstudent.org. Juniors may also want to consider taking the ACT on this test date.

 Orchestra News
By the time you read this, the Shawnee Mission West Orchestras will have performed their first concert of the year on October 8th. The Fall Concert had performances from each of the three orchestras.
Each year, our wonderful orchestras provide us with exciting pieces from contemporary to classical and they are all wonderfully performed under the direction of Curtis Mulvenon. Concert Orchestra made up of specifically of freshman orchestra students. At the end of their freshman year, they audition for placement in one of the other orchestra blocks for their sophomore year. Philharmonic Orchestra and Symphonic Strings vary according to size, musical development and type of music literature to be performed. Both of these orchestras are made up of sophomore to senior students. In addition, West has Viking Chamber Orchestra is a smaller group of student musicians and is the currently the only Chamber Orchestra in the Shawnee Mission district. Concert Orchestra performed Espana Cani by Macual Marquina Narro & Eric W. Knight: Night Train by Jimmy Forrest & John Caponegro; and Contrasts in E Minor by Francis L Feese. Philharmonic Orchestra performed Suite for Strings - I. Little March, II. Song, III. Scherzo by Robert Washburn; and Let it Be by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The orchestra was accompanied on drums by Tanner Rauter. Jeff Dilley performed a solo on this piece as well. Viking Chamber Orchestra performed The Entertainer by Scott Joplin, and as a chamber orchestra performs without a conductor. Symphonic Strings performed the Mission Impossible Theme by Lalo Schifrin, arranged by Elliot Del Borgo; Serenade for Strings - III. Elegy, by Peteer Ilitch Tschaikowsky; and Incantations by Richard Meyer. Incantations included solos by Sandahl Scarlett, Xivianne Matos, and Emily Miller. The orchestra department is going green. To reduce the amount of paper used, programs were not distributed for the concert. Program information for the concert was put into a slideshow and displayed in the auditorium prior to be beginning of the concert. Special thanks to Meghan Railsback for creating the slideshow. For parents, scrapbookers and students - the program can be found on Mr. Mulvenon's WebBack Pack in the documents section and the PRESTO website. Speaking of PRESTO (People Really Enthusiastically Supporting the Orchestra) PRESTO would not be working smoothly and seamlessly without the guidance of the Co-Presidents this year - Steve and Sabrina Crooke. They have worked tirelessly to ensure that Committee positions have been filled and that all activities flow smoothly. And it is just the beginning of the school year! Their dedication is evident throughout PRESTO and is much appreciated. A special thanks to all the Committee Chairs as well, who volunteer their time and talents to help our orchestra students. Your dedication is much appreciated! Please visit the PRESTO website: http://www.prestowest.org Concert programs, photos, meeting minutes and more are available to view. FOOD SERVICE....Did you know............ Did you know anyone receiving free or reduced lunches must get a complete meal in order to receive the benefit? This includes at least three of the five components offered: an entrée, milk, fruit, vegetable and bread. If a student doesn't have enough on their tray to qualify for a complete meal, the cashier may casually mention that they don't have enough food on their tray and ask them to go back and get a little more. At no time will a cashier mention that your child is on free or reduced lunches. If your free/ reduced student brings their lunch from home, they will not receive a free milk as part of the program. Only a complete meal qualifies as free or reduced. You can put money on your student's account that can be used to purchase milk for the days they bring a lunch. |
PLC Late Start Days The Shawnee Mission School District has incorporated late start days into all secondary school calendars this year. These days are set up to allow staff to participate in what are called Professional Learning Communities (PLC's). This practice is research based and proven beneficial to student learning. During these mornings, teachers are working in curricular teams in order to develop common objectives and formative assessments that become checks for understanding along your student's course of study. This program helps educators to create the conditions to help students learn at higher levels. West High School and the District continually works to better equip our teachers to provide the best educational opportunity for all students. |
Regular attendance is an important part of education. Only by attending classes can a student receive the full benefit of instruction. Getting to class on time is an integral piece of the utilization and success of instructional time for students.
A student is tardy when he or she enters the classroom after the appointed time for the class to begin. Excessive tardies will be subject to disciplinary measures.
If a student arrives before 8:00 am the student should report directly to class. After 8:00 am the student needs to report to the attendance office for an admit pass. Individual teachers may require students to be seated within the classroom prior to the tardy bell. Disciplinary actions will be taken by the teacher for the first three tardies to class. On the fourth and all subsequent tardies, students are referred to the office for appropriate consequences.
Selected hallways have established "tardy tables" to help monitor hallway traffic and tardiness throughout the day. Students are assigned 15 minute detentions on the first three tardies. On the fourth and subsequent tardies, students are referred to the office for appropriate consequences.
The goal is to promote good attendance and punctuality. |

UPDATE FROM PTSA
Wow...our last Viking Voice until 2010! Time is flying by. First, a big THANK YOU goes out to all the parents, students and staff for a great Homecoming Celebration. We had to make a few "extra" call outs for helpers...but everyone came through as always! With the COLD evening...the coat check was a hopping place! Thanks to the students for their patience. Our Halloween after game party is planned for October 23rd following the football game. Students, administration and chaperones are all welcome to wear costumes to the party. In order to ensure a safe environment, face paint, masks or costumes with weapons will not be permitted. The party begins at 9:30 and ends at 11:30. Come join us for a fun evening. Our last PTSA meeting was very well attended and quite informative. Gillian Chapman, Associate Superintendent, was our guest and we covered many topics, including block scheduling and financing. Currently the final decision on Block Scheduling is being reviewed with no changes expected for 2010-2011 school year. Please keep informed on this and all other issues that affect our school district. The district website at www.smsd.org is a great place to keep current on events in our district. Over the next month, we will be placing PTSA members on our nominating committee that will select the PTSA board positions for 2010-2011. Our goal is to have representation from each of our feeder schools. This is open to any PTSA member..just drop us an email if you are interested in or have a person to suggest for the nominating committee. Also, please let us know if you are interested in a position on the board or a committee! Finally, with the Holiday seasons right around the corner and keeping in that spirit, Sally and I would like to thank you again for your time spent helping with activities at West and encourage you to keep up the great work! It really is fun to spend time with the other parents at West and to see and be a part of the students' activities. From Matchup Mania to Homecoming...it is refreshing and encouraging to see our students making great memories! We look forward to seeing you at our next PTSA meeting on Tuesday, November 10th - 7:00 in the Library!! Sally Chew and Merilee Crow Co-Presidents SMW PTSA www.smwestptsa.org |

Viking Invitational Basketball Tournament (VIT)
November 12, 3, 14, & 15
Basketball parents and players: The VIT is the annual fundraiser for the SMW basketball program. It allows us to provide needed equipment and updated uniforms for the program. An event of this size requires an enormous amount of volunteer hours. If your child plans on playing basketball this year, we really need your help!
We need volunteers for the following jobs: concessions, ticket sales at the door, hospitality room, gym supervision and score tables. The students will be asked by the coaches to volunteer to help at the score tables during the games - however they are welcome to volunteer to help with the concessions stands as well. The exact times of the tournament may change by tournament time, but generally they are 4:15 pm to 10:30 pm on Thursday & Friday, on Saturday the times are 7:30 am to anywhere from 5:00 pm or go until 10:00 pm (depending on number of teams in the tournament), and on Sunday the times are 8:15 am to around 4:00 pm. Each volunteer shift is generally around 4 to 4.5 hrs. but we are very flexible. Please contact Merilee Crow with the day, time, place, and job you would like to volunteer for. You can reach her at 913-268-8117 or crow.merilee@gmail.com.
If you know of teams that would be interested in participating in the tournament they can learn more about it at http://www.westvikingshoops.com/West_Vikings/VIT.html. | |
