MESSAGE FROM DR. MCLEAN
Summer vacation for 2009 is here and I hope each of you are having a restful, fun time. This past school year was excellent and we wish the Class of 09 they very best as they begin their lives as adults. We have a change in the administrative leadership team for the 09-10 school year. The budget issue has made it necessary for the district to reduce our administrative allocation by one position. Mr. Flurry will be transferring to Shawnee Mission South next year and will serve as an associate principal there. Mr. Flurry has been a tremendous asset to West and we are all going to miss his wit and wisdom. I know I speak for the entire West family by wishing him the very best. I want to take this opportunity to welcome members of the class of 2013 and their families to West. This is a very exciting time of change and opportunity in your life. This will be the third class to be a part of the Freshman Mentoring Program (FMP). This program provides a group of upper class mentors to work with 9th graders through their freshman year. FMP takes place at the beginning of the seminar period. Don't forget the first day of school for 9th graders is Monday, August 17th. All other students will start school on Tuesday, August 18th. You will receive a letter explaining the paying of fees and policy information in mid-June. Please note our fee payment days are August 4th and 5th. Fee payment will take place at WEST in the library. On August 4th our hours will be 8 to 8 and on August 5th from 8 to 4. I would strongly encourage you to take advantage of paying fees after July 6th either by credit card or mailing a check to SMW. We have moved closer to both understanding and adopting the concept of excellence not only as an institution but also as families and individuals. I hope we are all setting higher goals for our personal, professional and community lives. This year we encouraged more students to stretch themselves by taking honors or advanced placement courses instead of taking regular courses. We want students to look at what they are learning - not simply what grade they will get in a course. This summer please take time to visit with your student about their future plans - both educational and career wise. Help your student to dream about attending a higher tier university or college. If your student is looking at going into the world of work or military, what are they doing to help prepare themselves to be the best plumber, electrician, heating/ac technician or soldier/sailor they can be? By encouraging your student to take advantage of the rigorous curriculum offered by the Shawnee Mission School District and SMW, you can help them to be better prepared for the opportunities that will come their way in the future. Vikings never settle - They expect the best! I want to thank the students, parents and teachers for their support and encouragement this past year. It's an honor and privilege to lead our wonderful students and faculty. I hope you enjoy your summer. As you're taking advantage of the time to be with family and friends, I would encourage you to find time to read a couple of good books or maybe just read the newspaper everyday so you can keep your reading and comprehension skills sharp. Be safe. Enjoy your summer. See you in August! Always remember - WEST is the BEST!

Freshman Orientation Filled With Opportunities
The Freshmen Mentor Program (FMP) will be hosting the first day of school activities for all freshmen on Monday, August 17th. Cinnamon rolls and milk will be provided by West faculty and staff. All freshmen should attend.
The day will be filled with opportunities to catch up with old friends, make new friends, tour West, and meet your teachers and upperclassmen mentors. Several clubs and school activities will be set up to offer information about the tons of ways to get involved at West.
We will focus on lowering the anxiety of the first day of school by making sure each student knows where his/her classes are and where his/her locker is, as well as the way block scheduling will work. The day will conclude with a pep assembly and plenty of time for asking questions.
Parents are invited to come to the auditorium at 7 p.m. to hear a little about West and our mission and traditions. This is also a time for parents to ask the questions they may be wondering about. While the parents meet, the students will have an opportunity to mix with friends while a DJ plays on the bridge from 7 - 9 p .m. Keep your eyes on the West home page, www.smsd.org/schools/smwest for more detailed information about this day and other important West information. |
Counseling Office Updates
|
Presidential Service Award
SMW students may apply for this award by tracking their service hours on the sheet available from the Counseling Office. The hours must be completed over a twelve month period beginning 4/1 and ending 3/31. The students self report the service hours and at the completion of the tracking period return the completed service hour form to the Counseling Office to be submitted for the award. At the predetermined deadline, the committee chair collects the tracking logs from the Counseling Office. The committee chair then compiles the information necessary for submission of the students for the award. The awards are applied for online on the Presidential Service Award website: www.presidentialserviceawards.gov The awards will be delivered to SMW and the Counseling Office and SMW Administration will determine how and when recognition will be scheduled. |
Reclassification of Students
Students must successfully complete a minimum number of credits to advance to the next grade level. At the end of summer school, the counselors will notify students who will be reclassified to the previous grade level. To advance to the next grade level, students must earn: 5.5 credits to move on to Grade 10 11.0 credits to move on to Grade 11 16.0 credits to move on to Grade 12 |
Saying Good-Bye to Dr. Leonard
It is with much sadness that we must say farewell to Dr. Lynn Leonard, college counselor for the past two years. With district budget cuts, Dr. Leonard's position in the Counseling Office has been eliminated. She has been a wonderful resource for our students in college planning. We wish her the very best in the future. Seniors will work with their alpha-assigned counselor in their post-high school planning. |
College Now/Advanced Placement Information Meeting
August 27th at 6:15 pm
Plan now to attend the College Now and Advanced Placement Information Meeting before Back-to-School Night on Thursday, August, 27, 2009, at 6:15 p.m. in the Cafeteria. |
SENIORS - Begin NOW to Plan for College
Seniors should be taking the ACT and/or the SAT for college entrance if they have not already done so. The ACT is offered in Kansas in September for the first time ever, but the registration deadline is August 7th. Students will need to register for this early test in the summer time if they want to take this ACT. The next ACT will be October 24th. Other test dates and registration information can be found at the testing websites.
ACT registration: www.actstudent.org
SAT registration: www.collegeboard.com
Senior year whizzes by quickly! Summer is an excellent opportunity for incoming seniors to begin their college search. In fact, by the end of summer, rising seniors should have most of their college search completed. Use the summer to explore websites, visit campuses, and prepare for upcoming exams.
By the end of summer you should have completed your list of colleges where you would like to apply. Your college research should include a profile of college costs, admission requirements, and study programs.
1. Search colleges using the internet. Examples include:
2. Take a virtual tour with online videos of college and universities
3. Narrow your list of possible colleges to three categories:
· 2-3 schools that you could definitely get in
· 2-3 schools that you could probably get in
· 3-5 schools that you would like to get it
4. Visit prospective colleges.
It is important that you visit schools you might want to attend. Schedule your visit at least two weeks in advance. Call the admissions office to arrange the visit and ask if you can sit in on classes, visit the dorm, talk with a professor, and take a campus tour. Speak to faculty and students and ask LOTS of questions. Ask students what they like the best and least about their school. TAKE notes!!
5. Request applications and brochures from your top colleges.
Create files with each college you are applying to and track your progress.
6. Create a resume of things that you have been involved in both in and out of school. This is your opportunity to show colleges what sets you apart from other applicants. There are four things important to schools in admitting students: academic record which includes your transcript and your test scores, extra-curricular involvement, essays (if required) and recommendations (If required). Schools like to see leadership positions and community involvement. They look for scope and depth; you have started something and committed to it rather than a listing of many different clubs or organizations.
7. Athletes should register with the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/common at the end of the junior year. |
Senior Pictures
DeCloud Studios is the official yearbook photographer. In order to be in the yearbook, seniors need to be photographed by DeCloud this summer. The deadline is in early September...summer is the best time to take care of this, as appointments after school starts are limited, and students get busy with school.
Here's how it works:
1. DeClould will mail you an appointment card. Show up at the assigned time, or call them to reschedule.
2. Have your picture taken. You will have to pay a sitting fee, but you do not have to purchase any pictures (unless you want to). If the sitting fee is an issue, contact Amy Morgan, yearbook adviser, at 993.7911 and we will work something out. We don't want anyone to be left out.
3. DeCloud will mail proofs to you. Indicate which picture you would like in the yearbook, and mail it back to them. If you do not choose a picture, DeCloud will choose one for you. They will send all images to the yearbook staff.
DeCloud Studios phone number is 913.648.2624
Senior ads
The yearbook staff will be mailing senior ad information in August, so start looking for those baby pictures now! |
Year Book Orders
Registration in August is the best (and cheapest!) time to purchase a yearbook. We will accept orders though December for $50. After that, students must wait until yearbook day in May to buy a book, when a limited number will be available for $60. |
Spanish National Honor Society
My name is Fabiola Herdoiza - I am a Spanish teacher and department chair for World Languages at Shawnee Mission West High School.
I am happy to announce the new members who were inducted into the Sevilla chapter of Shawnee Mission West's Spanish National Honor Society for 2009 (founded by Fabiola Herdoiza in 2001). Our ceremony was held on Monday, April 20, 2009.
To become inductees, students must be enrolled in Spanish 5 or Spanish 6, have 5 semesters of A in Spanish with an overall grade point average of 3.6. They must also perform 10 hours of community service in the local Hispanic community. We do a lot of service with El Centro. In addition, all the inductees participated in a fall fundraiser to support the Society's twelve year old adopted child (Roxana) in Peru. When we first adopted her she was 5 years old and had trouble walking. We have provided her with therapy and special shoes and now she can run! Our fundraiser also provided for a local Hispanic family that we adopted for Christmas. We also honored two year members.
These are exceptional students, not only in their mastery of Spanish but also in the goodness of their hearts.

PTSA Update
First off we would like to thank Valerie Wright and Carrie McGoldrick on their outstanding service to West PTSA. It is wonderful to step into a situation so smoothly and successfully run! They have been generous with their time and efforts to help make SM West PTSA such a valuable asset to our school. Merilee Crow and Sally Chew will be serving as your PTSA Co-Presidents for the 2009-2010 school year. Here is an introduction to us. Merilee Crow, Co-President of SMW PTSA for the 2009-2010 school year, is married to Kevin Crow. You might know him... he's the guy on the sidelines at many of the SMW sports events taking pictures!! We both graduated from K-State and have lived Lenexa/Shawnee for over 20 years. (Boy, that makes me feel old!) We have four kids. Two SMW graduates, Kyle (2006) and Matt (2007), that are currently attending K-State and Tanner (2010) and Whitney (2012) who are still enjoying their time at West. This will be my first major office in any PTA organization, so I am kind of an outsider! With my kids, I have focused on their individual activities within the school more than a specific PTA responsibility. So, I am very excited to take on a greater role this year. I have always liked to help if asked...but did not always seek out specific jobs. Therefore, my focus this year will be to make sure we reach out to more people to help. We have many "warriors" that do so much at West...many times the same people always seem to volunteer and "do" the work at West. However, in my opinion, the strength of our school is the diversity of our community of students and their families. One of my goals is to build a bridge between our students, teachers, parents and the community around us. We are working on establishing an outreach committee to foster volunteers from our former students, their parents and our local community. What can you do to help? Our schools of course need more money, but as Dr. McLean has expressed to us, we also need more help within our school as many staff positions have been eliminated. We will be sending more information out as we finalize this committee. Please consider taking a few hours to directly benefit our students by volunteering within the walls of West. Sally Chew, -President of SMW PTSA for the 2009-2010 school year is married to Don Chew, a K-State graduate. We have three children, Sara, Class of 2007, currently attending K-State, (there seems to be a trend here) David or Davey, class of 2010 and Billy, class of 2012. Don and I have been big supporters of our children, their activities and their schools. I have some experience with PTA, my name may sound familiar to you, as I have served as president of Christa McAuliffe PTA and Westridge PTA. Even though I have had the opportunity to serve my children's other schools in the past, high school PTSA will be a new experience for me. We have been busy planning the after game parties, Homecoming, WPA, registration and many other PTSA sponsored events. We have a fantastic board ready to help make everything a success and hope to get more students involved in the planning and implementing all of these great events. Please consider volunteering in some way to support our staff and students thru PTSA. Your membership helps to finance grants for class room teachers, student scholarships for college, teacher appreciation dinners and many other activities that are held thru out the school year. We would also like you to consider signing up to provide cookies or other food at PTSA sponsored events or we would love the opportunity to have you as a committee chairperson. There are lots of positions that we need help thru out the year. Please click here to download the PTSA membership form.
Please do not hesitate to call us with issues that are important to you. If you would like more information or a way to contact us, go to our SMW PTSA website at http://www.freewebs.com/smwptsa. |

School Meals
Students with Milk Allergy: New Federal regulations have changed guidance for making milk substitutions for students who have a milk allergy. Food Service was notified of this change effective December 2008 but did not implement this change since USDA indicated they would reconsider this policy in 6 months. As of this date no change has been communicated so we must change our procedures starting July 1, 2009. The new regulation states: 1. If a student has a disability that restricts his/her diet, food service will make a substitution for milk. This must be documented by a written statement signed by a licensed physician, which explains the need for substitutions and includes recommended alternate foods. USDA states that a disability is considered when it may result in a severe, life threatening reactions such as inability to breath. 2. If a student has a food allergy or intolerance to milk, food service cannot make a substitution for milk. Food Service is allowed to provide a cup to the student who may then fill the cup with water from the water fountain or water pitcher located in the dining room. Food service is not allowed to provide the student with a cup filled withwater. Currently many of these students are provided a juice in place of milk. We will not be able to continue to do this effective July 2009. The state is currently revising their allergy forms. Once these become available we will forward you copies. Food Service will be having discussions with the building nurses to ensure they are aware of these new regulations. If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact Jill Funk, Nutritionist. |
Attention Athletes
Every student who plans to try out for a sport must have a physical on file in the athletic office dated after May 1, 2009. Please take time over the summer to get this done and avoid last minute panic. KSHSAA forms may be obtained in the school office or from www.kshsaa.org web site. |

NEW KANSAS STATE IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS
The Kansas Department of Health and Education has notified SMSD that the immunization requirements for schools have changed. This happens from time to time as the CDC (Center for Disease Control) makes new recommendations and KS updates their state laws. The following are changes from earlier requirements.
2009-2010 School Year
· Hepatitis B: three doses through grade 9 (previously required through grade 5).
· Varicella (chickenpox): two doses required for Kindergarten; one dose required grades 1-9 unless history of varicella disease documented by a licensed physician (previously required through grade 5).
· Tdap boosterrequired if 12 years of age on or before September 1, 2009 and if two years since last DTap/Td.
· All other requirements remain the same.
2010-2011 School Year
· All students will be required to have three doses of Hepatitis B and have two doses of varicella (unless history of disease documented by a physician) for the 2010-2011 school year.
Please provide copies of all immunizations or a note from your doctor that your student has had the chicken pox to the school nurse before the beginning of school on August 17, 2009. Students who have not received the required immunizations will not be able to attend school until documentation is received. Thank you for your help and assistance in this effort to keep our students healthy. Please contact your school nurse at 993-7816 if you have questions or need additional information. |

A BIG THANK YOU to the Supporters of Senior Sizzle!
On Saturday, May 16, the SM West senior class of 2009 attended the annual drug-free, alcohol-free graduation party PTSA sponsors, better known as Senior Sizzle.
This year's party, Wild, Wild West, featured a western theme and menu. At the end of the evening there was a drawing for prizes, and many of our seniors walked away with flat screen TVs, laptop computers, GPS systems, gift cards and many other incredible prizes.
Without the support of the community, this graduation celebration for our seniors would not happen, so a BIG thank you to the following businesses/people who donated to Senior Sizzle, along with a warm thank you to all the senior parents who gave of their time/money to make this year's fantastic Senior Sizzle a reality.

Spotlighters is the parent-run organization dedicated to fostering the performing arts at Shawnee Mission West. We encourage all parents whose son or daughter participates in the choir or theatre programs to join Spotlighters and support the programs with their time and talents. Spotlighter parents have several opportunities for parent involvement. There are many chances to meet other parents with students in the performing arts, including the monthly meetings. Plus, your membership dollars will go toward helping the choir and theatre teacher meet their 2009-2010 goals, as well as, the annual Spotlighters scholarship awards presented to deserving seniors at the end of each school year.
All Spotlighter members will be listed in each performing arts program during the school year with recognition of their membership level - Member, Patron of the Arts, or Angel of the Arts. Patron of the Arts members will receive one complimentary seat, and Angel of the Arts members will receive two complimentary seats to the two plays (non-rep.) and the one musical production during the school year. Angel of the Arts will also have early entry for the Annual Spotlight Spectacular Choir Show in May.

WILL YOU SHARE YOUR HOME AND LIFE????
Be a Host Family for an International Exchange Student!
Host families are needed for exchange students who will arrive in August from Europe (Germany, Poland, Hungary, Belgium, Spain), Eurasia (Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Turkmenistan), Asia (China, Japan, Thailand, Philippines), Scandinavia (Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden), and South America (Brazil, Chile). They represent a wide variety of countries and will be studying here for either first semester or the school year. These English-speaking teenagers have their own spending money and health insurance and need a nurturing family to provide a supportive family environment are they study and learn about America firsthand.
Having someone from another country in your home provides an invaluable learning experience. In addition to learning about their culture and homeland, families often gain fresh insights by teaching exchange students about our culture and area of the country. The students' main objectives are to improve their English while living the life of an American teenager and experiencing our American way of life.
I am the Local Coordinator for the Academic Year in America (AYA) program of the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS Foundation), a leader in the field of educational travel and exchange. After working with you to select the international son or daughter who will best suit your family's interests and lifestyle, I serve as the counselor for the student and work with both the student and your family throughout the exchange program.
If your family is interested in hosting a student, please call Jane Bigler at 913-492-1969. Student applications are available now for your selection. | |
