MESSAGE FROM DR. McLEAN
It truly is a great time to be a Viking! For the most part, the construction is finished. Students and teachers are getting used to the new facilities and appear to be enjoying them more each day. Our ACT scores are higher this year than last. We continue the tradition of making AYP and being recognized as a School of Excellence in math and reading. Our performing groups such as band, choir and orchestra are doing very well and preparing for fall and winter concerts. The drama department just finished the fall play, The Nerd and received some very positive critical acclaim for their efforts. Our PTSA has a larger membership than last year and they are busy providing valuable assistance to students and staff. And last - but not least -our athletic teams have been having a good fall with over 800 students involved in athletic and non-athletic activities. (And, just in case you hadn't noticed, the Viking football team is undefeated!) Yes, there are many, many wonderful things happening at West this year. Do you ever stop and wonder why so many good things continue to happen at West? The answer is really pretty simple. It's the people. Students come from homes that value education. Parents are willing to make sacrifices of time and money to ensure that their child and others have what is needed for each student to excel. And parents are not willing to settle for mediocrity from their children or the school they attend. Teachers care about students and develop positive relationships with them. They are willing to put in the time and energy to improve their skills and work hard to make their lessons exciting and intellectually challenging. All these people make the difference between mediocrity and excellence. Yes, West is a great school, and I am very proud to serve as its principal. But we should never forget that it takes all these good people working together that makes West what it is. Please encourage members of the West family to strive for excellence and never settle for second best. If each of us always strives to do our best then West will continue to be a great school serving a great community. Transfer Policy Changes for the 09-10 School Year Starting with the '09 - '10 school year, every high school in the district will be accepting transfers. Currently, only North and South are open to transfers. Only those students accepted into the Signature Programs at East, Northwest and West were allowed transfers. You will find detailed information about the transferring process in this newsletter. A very important part of the process is that it must be completed prior to February 1, 2009. Students applying for a transfer to another high school after February 1, 2009 will most likely be denied. National Merits at West This year we are fortunate to have members of the Class of 2009 recognized for their performance on the SAT test they took during their junior year at West. I am proud to recognize the following students as Semi-finalists in the National Merit program: Neel Desai, Grace Guamnitz, Alexander Jones, Dane Mitchell, and Kayla Viets. This fall our semifinalists will go through a process to determine how many will become finalists. I am also proud to recognize the following student for being recognized as Commended in the National Merit program: Spencer White. These students and their families should be extremely proud of this wonderful accomplishment. The school will be hosting a reception in November to honor these students, their parents and teachers. Always remember - WEST is the BEST!

Student Council News
Second quarter is a time when Student Council concentrates on helping others in the community. Have you heard about the annual Canned Food Drive? This year it will be held from November 1st through the 21th and will help the Johnson County Christmas Bureau aid those right here in Johnson County during the holiday season. Shawnee Mission West is now a major contributor to this effort and we are proud to do so. We need your help to make this a stand-out year for the canned food drive. Send cans of food with your students during this time in November or make a monetary contribution. Checks can be made payable to SM West and put "Food Drive" in the memo. In addition, there will be a variety of activities for students to join in on as part of the canned food drive, so bring your cans, your dollars, and your enthusiasm during the month of November to help this worthy cause. The community always needs blood donations and our only blood drive this year will be held on Tuesday, November 11th, from 7:30AM to 1:30PM in the small gym at Shawnee Mission West High School. People in the community, as well as Shawnee Mission West students who are 17 years of age or older, may give blood. This blood drive will be managed by the Red Cross. If you have not given blood in the last 56 days, come by the school, sign in at the office and come to the small gym to give blood. Remember, this is the only blood drive offered here this year. A special thanks to PTSA for helping Student Council put on a tremendous Homecoming celebration in October. The parade, game, and dance showed true Shawnee Mission West pride and spirit! Thanks to all who contributed to its success. |
Hello Shawnee Mission West Parents! Coalition is a group at West that is trying to change the world. Or at least, that's what we hope to do. This club was started at West this year and is now currently in all five Shawnee Mission Schools. The main purpose of our group is to raise awareness and funds for kids in Northern Uganda, Southeast Asia and Darfur. During this fall semester Coalition is focusing primarily on Uganda, a country near the center of Africa. They are in the midst of a 23-year-long war, and peace is a long way off. The rebel army in the country has run out of resources, so for many years they have been kidnapping children and forcing them to fight and murder at ages as young as 8 or 9. Coalition sponsors a group called Invisible Children, who seek to show these horrors in Uganda to the world. Schools for Schools is a section of Invisible Children that literally goes into Uganda and builds schools for children to stay and learn in, protecting them from the rebel army. Currently SMWest Coalition is partnered with a school in Gulu, the capital of Uganda, called Gulu Senior Secondary. This fall, Schools for Schools needs over $55,000 to complete an assembly hall for Gulu Senior Secondary. The members of Coalition at West have big dreams. Students are opening their eyes to the world around them; they are learning how to lead and achieve incredible things. Coalition hopes to raise at least $20,000 for the school. We believe it is possible; we believe we can make a difference. But we need help. If you are interested in donating or contributing in any way to SMWest Coalition, you may mail checks to SMWest, just write ATTN: Ryan Call on the envelope, or e-mail Coalition with further questions at smwestcoalition@hotmail.com. Thank you for your time! Ryan Call Coalition Sponsor Jessica Miller President of Coalition |
Shawnee Mission West Orchestra Fall Concert and Open House Quartet
Orchestra Fall Concert The much-anticipated Fall Orchestra Concert was held on Thursday, Oct 2, 2008 in the newly renovated Shawnee Mission West Auditorium. The Concert Orchestra performed three pieces: Mantras by Richard Meyer, Hungarian Dance No.5 by Brahms/Isaac and Déjà vu by Carold Nunez. A solo was performed by Lauren Martens. As their first concert at SMW, all the students performed as if they had played on the stage many times. The Symphonic Strings also performed three pieces: Jocatta by Frescobaldi/Higgins, As Summer Was Just Beginning by Larry Daehn, and Waltz of the Wicked by Kirt Mosier. The audience enjoyed their performance and the students' enthusiasm was evident in all their pieces, especially Waltz of the Wicked. The Chamber Orchestra performed two pieces: Pizzicato Polka by Strauss/Walker and Suite for Strings - movements 1. Praelude, 2. Sarabande, 3. Gavotte and 5. Rigaudon - composed by Edward Grieg. Solo pieces featured Kayla Viets, Kathleen Martin, Rachel Bolter and Robert Fuller. The second piece, Suite for Strings, was an amazing 12 minutes long and held the audience spellbound during all four movements. This was the first orchestra concert of the year and the musicians were able to perform their pieces on the new orchestra pit cover - which enables them to perform closer to the audience and it truly enhanced the concert experience. All the renovations in the auditorium improved the concert experience and it was enjoyed and appreciated by the audience and musicians, but none more so than the musicians themselves and our wonderful orchestra conductor, Mr. Curtis Mulvenon. Their enthusiasm for their music was evident in each piece they played in the excellent new auditorium Open House Quartet The Open House was held on October 5, 2008 to celebrate the construction completion. The String Quartet performed on the bridge from 4:15 to 4:45 pm for the listening pleasure of those attending the Open House. The String Quartet was comprised of Emily Miller - Violin, Helen Paolo - Violin, Kayla Viets - Viola and Rachel Bolter - Cello. Visitors were able to enjoy the music of these Chamber Orchestra students while they were viewing the improvements at school and enjoying their refreshments. Upcoming events: District Auditions - Saturday, November 8 in Baldwin, KS WINTER Concert - Thursday, December 11 - 7 pm at West Auditorium PRESTO Meetings: Tuesday, Oct 14th at 7 pm - Orchestra Room Tuesday, Nov 11th at 7 pm - Orchestra Room Remember - PRESTO stands for People Really Enthusiastically Supporting The Orchestra. Transfer Request Procedures
Beginning with the 2009-2010 school year, all high schools will be open to transfers. The application deadline will be February 1 and requests will not be honored after that date. Parents seeking to transfer their child to a school other than their designated home school should obtain a student transfer form from their home school or from the McEachen Administrative Center, 7235 Antioch. In accordance with board of education policy, a transfer request for students currently enrolled in the Shawnee Mission School District must be completed and returned to the student's current school on or before February 1st of the school year preceding the school year for which the transfer is requested. Requests should be made to the principal of the school in which the student is currently enrolled. Transfers received by that date will be considered and families notified by May 15th of intent to approve or deny the request.
Students must re-apply when changing levels; elementary to middle school; middle school to high school. A transfer may be rescinded at any time if a student fails to meet the requirements. Due to unexpected changes in enrollment, any transfer granted may be rescinded by the district up to the first day of the school year for which the transfer was requested.
For incoming kindergarten students, a transfer request must be completed and returned on or before May 15th of the school year preceding the school year for which the transfer is requested. Transfers received by that date will be considered and families notified by August 1st of intent to approve or deny the request.
Transfer requests are considered in the order in which they are received and approved based on space and staff availability. While the district will make every attempt to accommodate transfer requests involving members of the same family, the district may not always be able to do so. Requests for transfers involving elementary and secondary students need not be renewed annually, but shall be made subject to annual review.
Once a transfer is approved, students may remain at that school for the duration provided they are in good standing academically, behaviorally, and in regard to attendance. District guidelines require that students attending on an approved transfer must maintain satisfactory grades (for secondary students a minimum of 2.0 grade point average), maintain a minimum of 95 percent attendance record, and maintain an acceptable discipline record.
When requesting a transfer, it is important that the applicant fully understand the terms and conditions under which a transfer may be considered and granted. Parents and legal guardians of a student transferred must waive any claim to district-provided student transportation. Transfer may adversely affect the eligibility of a student to participate in interscholastic activities. |

Helicopter Parent? What's That?
Ouch. I am guilty as charged. Yes - and this is NOT a 12-step program. I am a helicopter parent. I am one of those people who cannot bear to see their children fail or suffer. I love my kids - more than anything - and their welfare is more important than anything else to me. Because their welfare is so important, I am trying hard to forswear my wicked ways and stop helicoptering - stop swooping in to save them, stop hovering over their every move, their every issue. Although they still tell me everything, I've come to realize that all that truth does not require my response, beyond sympathy, celebration, and love. It is NOT a call to action. I am NOT part of the Marines, and they will NOT land to save my kids from JDC, bad grades, or acne. The most loving thing I can do for my kids is to encourage their ability to solve problems without me. I'm still there to encourage and to reflect. I am not there to make it all right. If my kids are going to grow up, I have got to get out of their way. That's what a parent's love is really about - helping my kids to grow up. I didn't hold their chubby fists forever when they were learning to walk. I can't and mustn't try to save them from toppling over, even now, when falls are so much further and can be so scary, especially to me. But how can I be sure I am always making the right decision? I can't. I'll make mistakes. My kids and I, we'll still love each other. I learned to live through my errors and I can't give them any less than that. Sky King, you and I are . . . history.

Assistance Needed to Help Stock the Nurse's Pantry This year PTSA is sponsoring a program to help stock the SMW Nurse's Pantry. This Pantry will assist the SMW nurse, Dr. Vaughn, in providing a snack for students that are in need of some nutrition during the day to help them concentrate and focus on class when lunchtime or dinnertime is several hours away. Items such as granola bars, individually wrapped packages of crackers, peanuts, anything with protein would be greatly appreciated. Items for donation can be dropped off directly in the nurse's office, contact Cheryl Scott at cdscott@everestkc.net for pickup or bring them to the next PTSA meeting. Thanks so much for your support of this program! Learning is why we are here at SMW, and this is an effort to help ensure that all our students can focus during class.

TIPS ON STAYING CONNECTED WITH YOUR TEEN Positive communication with your teen is the key to a successful parent-child relationship. Here are some helpful hints on how to "keep on talking"! Talk daily with your teen- even if they do not seem to be listening. Try to talk about topics that interest them. Respect and ask for their opinions. Be open-minded! Set limits and clear expectations based on your values and principles. Talk about agreed consequences before troubled situations occur. Continually tell them and show them how much you love and care for them. Voice your disappointments, but always try to stay positive and avoid put-downs. Arrange for "special time" together. Walks, working out, going to lunch...something you both can enjoy! Seek professional help if your teen's abnormal behaviors last more than three weeks. You can call Mary Lea Kieffer, School Social Worker, for additional support, 913-993-7836. |

Viking Invitational Basketball Tournament (VIT)
November 13, 14, 15 &16
Basketball parents and players: The VIT is the annual fundraiser for the SMW basketball program. It allows us to provide needed equipment and updated uniforms for the program. An event of this size requires an enormous amount of volunteer hours. If your child plans on playing basketball this year, we really need your help!
We need volunteers for the following jobs: concessions, ticket sales at the door, hospitality room, gym supervision and score tables. The students will be asked by the coaches to volunteer to help at the score tables during the games - however they are welcome to volunteer to help with the concessions stands as well. The exact times of the tournament may change by tournament time, but generally they are 4:15 pm to 10:30 pm on Thursday & Friday, on Saturday the times are 7:30 am to anywhere from 5:00 pm or go until 10:00 pm (depending on number of teams in the tournament), and on Sunday the times are 8:15 am to around 4:00 pm. Each volunteer shift is generally around 4 to 4.5 hrs. but we are very flexible. Please contact Mindi Knightly with the day, time, place, and volunteer job you are volunteering for, mknightly@everestkc.net (preferred) or 888-0068.
