MESSAGE FROM DR. McLEAN
Viking Voice is GREEN
This is the first edition of our newsletter being shared with our community via e-mail. I want to thank the PTSA leadership for their courage and foresight to help move the way we communicate into the 21st century. This new technique helps to save both our natural resources and reduce the expense of postage. We hope you enjoy getting school news in this format and encourage other Viking families to complete the form in the front office so they too can be placed on the emailing list.
Great Start to the School Year Students and faculty are enjoying a great start to the ' 08 - '09 school year. Currently we have 1850 students enrolled. This is about 100 fewer than last year. In fact, the incoming Class of 2012 has 435 members - about 100 fewer than we had in last year's senior class. The Class of '12 has been a wonderful surprise! The class is adapting to the high school setting and appears to have many good leaders and academically gifted individuals. I also want to acknowledge the outstanding leadership I am seeing from the Class of '09. I am so proud of the way our seniors are stepping up with the Freshmen Mentor Program (FMP), STUCO and our many athletic and music squads.
Construction is Almost Finished Most of the contractors have finished their work and we are into the new classrooms. It has been an exciting 18 months and the end of the construction is very close. The new facilities are wonderful and extra space is something both the students and teachers appreciate. Taxpayers, thank you for 'stepping up to the plate' and providing the funds needed to make these positive improvements to the building at West. We will continue striving to meet your expectations and produce students with the skills needed to be productive citizens in the 21st century. AYP Update Last spring our 10th and 11th graders took the State of Kansas Math (10) and Reading (11) assessments. I am happy to report the preliminary data indicated that our students performed at a high enough level for SMW to be identified as a school that MET AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) for the '07 - '08 school year. A special "thank you" goes to Mr. Flurry, Associate Principal, Bev Morris, Math Department Chair and Peggy Patch, Language Arts Department Chair during the '07 - '08 school year for their leadership in preparing our students to take these very difficult exams. The greatest amount of praise should be reserved for our students. Special thanks to last year's 10th and 11th graders (current juniors and seniors) for putting forth their best effort to demonstrate they do have the academic skills needed to be successful on these State of Kansas exams. Parent Involvement Still Key to Success SMW parents are one of the keys to our school's success. Whether you're talking about band, debate, soccer, cross country, drama or yearbook our wonderful parent support is outstanding. When parents are a part of the T.E.A.M. they help students, teachers and administrators improve. If you are a parent of a SMW Viking, thank you for not only your financial support but for your willingness to give of your time, energy and talent to make sure our programs are the best they can be.
Remember, YOU are an essential piece of the Viking Puzzle! |

Parent & Teacher Conferences
September 18 - 19
We strongly urge ALL parents to participate in parent-teacher conferences regardless of your child's course grade status. We have two convenient formats available. Conferences on Thursday, Sept 18 from 5-8 p.m. will be OPEN and held in the gymnasiums and cafeteria. There is no need for appointments for these Thursday evening conferences. Plan to spend 7 - 10 minutes per teacher. If a parent and/or teacher would like to continue the conference past the allotted time, they should establish a conference time for Friday morning between 7:30 - noon when teachers return to their classrooms allowing for more private conversations. If a parent cannot attend the conferences held Thursday, Sept 18, they should contact the teacher directly by phone to establish an appointment for Friday, Sept 19. |

Student Council News
SM West Student Council is up and running for the 2008-09 school year. We have already met with the PTSA leadership to find ways to help each other with the activities at West. We have sixteen members on our Executive Board this year that meet twice per week during seminar, with Mrs. Benolkin serving as our sponsor. Here are a few projects we are working on to benefit our school and our community:
New Tutoring Program - Beginning this school year, we are starting a new tutoring program that is aimed at helping students in math and other subjects from elementary schools feeding into West. This project takes much preparation and we are part of a larger group of students working to set up the tutoring.
Piece of the Puzzle - In an attempt to make everyone feel like they are an "important piece of the puzzle" at West, the Executive Board cut out a puzzle piece for every student attending our school. They are displayed on the bridge for all to see.
Helping New Students - The five officers gave tours to the new upperclassmen on the first day of school, helping new students at West to get more comfortable with their surroundings. All of these activities are just our way of trying to include everyone into the West community.
Elections to be held soon - The annual fall representative elections will be held on September 12th, as well as the election for the freshmen officers. Our first big StuCo meeting will be on Tuesday, September 16th. At that time, the Homecoming 2008 theme will be chosen. So, stay tuned for the announcement, and remember, October 4th is the Homecoming dance for West. |
Health Careers Program
The Health Careers Program is glad to be back at SMW full time!! Students greatly appreciate the large, newly renovated classroom also! Orchestra Students and Parents Enjoy Picnic
Approximately 75 students, PRESTO parents, and Mr. Mulvenon, our amazing orchestra director, enjoyed the annual PRESTO picnic on August 17th at Shawnee Mission Park. There was plenty of food, games and camaraderie for everyone. The students/parents enjoyed activities such as Nerf Noodle Relays, Nerf Ball Relays and Blindfolded Syrup Relays. Sure, they sound easy, but it took a lot of skill, coordination, teamwork and communication in order to win the prizes. Try having groups of students keeping Nerf Noodles between them without using their hands while moving through the course or trying not to cringe when you had a Nerf Ball on your head and your teammates and chanting "Batter Up". It isn't easy to move pancake syrup from one cup to another cup 25 feet away with a plastic spoon, much less blindfolded - but several teams achieved their objective and the syrup was transported from one place to another. Students don't worry - there were cameras there to capture all the action. There were also several drawings for the students that attended. Relay prizes and drawings included Ramen Noodles (appropriate for the Nerf Noodle Relay, don't you think?), gift certificates from Farm to Market Neighborhood Café in downtown Overland Park, Sheridan's Frozen Custard at 119th and Metcalf and Pizza Maker. And let's not forget the fabulous prize of a can of SPAM that was awarded to one lucky girl! The grand prize drawing was for a Viola bow from KC Strings in Merriam and Jack Karsten was the lucky winner. Upcoming events: FALL Concert - Thursday, October 2 at 7pm - West Auditorium
District Auditions - Saturday, November 8 in Baldwin, KS WINTER Concert - Thursday, December 11 - 7pm at West Auditorium PRESTO Meetings: Thursday, Sept 11 at 7pm - Orchestra Room Tuesday, Oct 14th at 7pm - Orchestra Room Tuesday, Nov 11th at 7pm - Orchestra Room Remember - PRESTO stands for People Really Enthusiastically Supporting The Orchestra. If you have an orchestra student and would like to join PRESTO, please visit the PRESTO website at www.prestowest.org/ to download a membership application. |

Notes From the Nurse Here are a few ideas for healthy meals prepared by the time conscious: Put healthy meals on the table quickly with these time-savers.
● Freeze ahead. Double recipes, and freeze half for later. Pour soups or stews into single-serving containers for snacks that can be easily defrosted in the microwave. ● Make one-dish meals. For example, mix 1 lb. cooked egg noodles, 1 can drained tuna (packed in water), and ½ lb. sliced mushrooms. Add ½ cup fat-free milk and 1 can low-sodium mushroom soup. Sprinkle with low-fat cheddar cheese, and bake at 350° for 20 minutes. ● Use shortcuts. Buy bottled marinades, readymade crusts, and bagged rewashed fresh vegetables. For a weeknight meal, cover focaccia bread with marinara sauce, shredded skim mozzarella, and broccoli pieces. Broil until the cheese melts.
LOCAL STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR OUTSTANDING SKILLS IN NATIONAL COMPETITION
Shawnee Mission West High School FCCLA members recently participated in the STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events at Family, Career and Community Leaders of America's (FCCLA) 2008 National Leadership Meeting.
Christina Pham, Spencer Fry, & Matthew Buechele, Broamoor Technical Center students, received third place in the Culinary Arts competition and they each earned a $10,000 scholarship to the Culinary Institute of America. Nearly 2,500 students advanced from the local, regional, and state level of STAR Events to the national meeting. The Culinary Arts STAR event is a team event that recognizes participants enrolled in occupational culinary arts/food service training programs (like the Broadmoor Technical Center) for their ability to work as members of a team to produce a quality meal using industrial culinary arts/food service techniques and equipment. In addition to the STAR Events competition, these students and Dr. Julia Crain, Broadmoor Technical Center Principal, also participated in the National FCCLA Meeting. This year's student-devised subject for the annual national meeting was "Excellence Electrified," and throughout the five-day convention, participants examined and discussed several critical issues, including family, school and community violence prevention, physical as well as financial fitness, future career exploration and countless community service projects. FCCLA: The Ultimate Leadership Experience is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences Education. FCCLA has more than 220,000 members and nearly 7,000 chapters from 50 state associations and the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The organization has involved more than ten million youth since its founding in 1945. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only career and technical in-school student organization with the family as its central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities. |
Assistance Needed to Help Stock the Nurses's Pantry
This year PTSA is sponsoring a program to help stock the SMW Nurse's Pantry. This Pantry will assist the SMW nurse, Dr. Vaughn, in providing a snack for students that are in need of some nutrition during the day to help them concentrate and focus on class when lunchtime or dinnertime is several hours away. Items such as granola bars, individually wrapped packages of crackers, peanuts, anything with protein would be greatly appreciated. Items for donation can be dropped off directly in the nurse's office, contact Cheryl Scott at cdscott@everestkc.net for pickup or bring them to the next PTSA meeting. Thanks so much for your support of this program! Learning is why we are here at SMW, and this is an effort to help ensure that all our students can focus during class. |

Wednesday, October 15th is "Testing Wednesday"
Students who register and pay for tests should report to school at regular time (7:40). Students in grades 9-11 have the option to take tests on that morning. All other students should report to school in time to begin class at 11:00. More information will be given to students closer to the date. Parents: It's time to register your students for tests!!
Freshmen - Consider taking the PSAT This year Shawnee Mission West freshman will again have the opportunity to take the PSAT/NMSQT test. In an effort to identify those students who might qualify for honors and advanced classes, the PSAT/NMSQT offers excellent information. With the results of this test, we can increase access to higher level classes and ensure that no student who has the chance of succeeding in those classes is overlooked. We can also identify students who should be taking higher-level prerequisite courses to prepare for advanced classes. If your student wants the option of more challenging classes or are planning on attending college, they should register for the PSAT/NMSQT in the counseling office. They will receive information in their Seminar classes in September.
Sophomores

As a "pre-ACT" test, the PLAN is good predictor of performance on the ACT Assessment. Students may use a calculator for the Mathematics Test.

The Presidential Service Award
Every SMW student is eligible for an award recognizing their contribution to the community. We encourage all students to track the hours they give to their community through various school activies such as NHS, STUCO, PTSA, band or sports fundraising, church activities and scouting, just to name a few.
SMW students may apply for this award by tracking their service hours on the tracking sheet that is available from the counseling office. The hours must be completed over a twelve month period beginning 4/1 and ending 3/31. The students self report the service hours and at the completion of the tracking period return the completed service hour form to the counseling office to be submitted for the award. At the predetermined deadline, the committee chair collects the tracking logs from the counseling office. The committee chair then compiles the information necessary for submission of the students for the award. The awards are applied for on line on the Presidential Service Award website, www.presidentialserviceawards.gov. The awards will be delivered to SMW and the counseling office and administration will determine how and when recognition will be scheduled. |

How it works: Any student needing help in any core academic subject is welcome to take advantage during any tutoring session. 9th grade students with one or more F's in core academic classes:
- During the school year, students with F's will be assigned to S.A.I.L. until the end of the next grading period (progress report or quarter).
- Students are required to attend at least two sessions each week; attendance at additional sessions is encouraged.
- Students will work with peer tutors and/or teachers that are experts in the area in which they need help.
S.A.I.L. time will become optional at the next grading period when all core academic grades are D's or better. How parents can help their students:
- Check Parent@School online to see and discuss grades and upcoming assignments with your student weekly.
- Encourage students to monitor their own grades online with Parent@School.
- Communicate concerns with teachers and counselors.
- Encourage your student to use S.A.I.L. time or other intervention time (see below) for any academic needs.
Don't forget these powerful learning supports available for all students at SM West:
- Academic Seminar - Students may visit with their teachers for extra help on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:40-2:40 with a pass from that teacher.
- Teachers are available before and after school (7:20-7:40 and 2:40-3:20).

The Explosive Child Sponsored by the Parent Resource Center
Presenter: Lea Ann Pasquale, Shawnee Mission Behavior Specialist This workshop offers a brief introduction to some of Dr. Ross W. Greene's concepts in his recent book, The Explosive Child. Molli will also be referencing Dr. Greene's recent book titled," Treating Explosive Kids". Explosive children are characterized by striking inflexibility and low frustration tolerance. They make life significantly more difficult and challenging for both themselves and the people who interact with them. Often these children may have been given medical diagnoses such as Attention Deficit Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Tourette's Syndrome, Depression, or Bipolar Disorder. "A major premise of the book The Explosive Child is that these children do not choose to be explosive and noncompliant-any more than a child would choose to have a reading disability-but are delayed in the process of developing the skills that are critical to being flexible and tolerating frustration (or have significant difficulty applying these skills when they most need to)."-Ross Greene Basically, CHILDREN DO WELL IF THEY CAN. If they can't, then they need us to help them figure out better ways to do well. In this course we will develop understanding of what is happening with these children and discuss some ways to help with the problem. Date: October 13, 2008 Time: 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. Location: Multi-Purpose Room Arrowhead Administrative Center 6601 Santa Fe Drive Cost: $10 per person To Enroll: Call The Parent Resource Center at 993-9315 to enroll for this class.

PTSA is a Piece of the Puzzle
The theme this year for West is "You're an essential piece of the Viking puzzle".
Our Parent Teacher Student Association is one of the pieces of the puzzle helping to unite home, school and community here at Shawnee Mission West. We are an organization that works very closely with the administration to help carry out their vision. Our Executive Board is comprised of 10 members who have worked hard all summer long. They worked to fill the 49 Board of Managers positions, attended the Kansas PTA State Conference, worked with the administration to coordinate Back-to-School Registration, developed a prototype of the new Viking Voice E-newsletter, held a Welcome Back breakfast for the teachers and hosted the Freshman Viking Voyage dance. And all this was done before school even started!
Thank you to all the chaperones, event volunteers and bakers who help to make us successful. We couldn't do it without you. Recently, members of our Executive Board met with members of the Student Council Executive Board. We realize that as a PTSA, the students need a bigger voice in what happens at their school. We are proud to have 3 of the Board of Managers positions held by students and encourage any student to become more involved in PTSA. Many of the committees are seeking student volunteers to assist with planning and carrying out a variety of activities. Students can find a listing of our committees on the SMW PTSA website. This year we added 4 new Board of Managers (BOM) positions. We have a Nurse's Pantry that provides nutritious snacks to students unable to focus in class. We have a group of Office Volunteers who help in the office when all school meetings or events occur so the office staff can attend.
We are hosting an Open House for the community on October 5th, the day after Homecoming, from 2p-5p. We are excited to open the school up to the public and be able to showcase your tax dollars at work. The day will begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony in the new auditorium that will include district and local government officials and maybe a past SMW celebrity or two. Then tours will be conducted around SMW. Please join us.
Last, but not least, we are hosting our very first Book Club. The book 19 Minutes by Jodi Picoult will be discussed. This book is about a boy who has been bullied his whole life and comes back and opens fire at his high school. This book looks at various character's perspectives on the how and why a tragedy of this type occurred. Please contact Rebecca Williams at rebeccawilliams@smsd.org if you, your student or anyone you know would like to take part. Of course, all of these great programs wouldn't be possible without your membership dollars. 56% of our budget comes from membership, 32% comes from After-game parties and 12% from Girl's Basketball Concessions. If you or your student has yet to join PTSA, please do so now. Membership forms are available on our SMW PTSA website and in the SMW administrative office. Your membership makes our puzzle piece fit into the big picture. On behalf of the Executive Board, thank you for your continued support. Carrie McGoldrick SMW PTSA Co-President |
Reflections: "WOW!"
The 2008-2009 PTSA Reflections contest in arts and culture will accept entries in six categories: Literature -- Visual Arts -- Photography -- Musical Composition -- Dance Choreography -- Film Production.
The Reflections theme for this year is "Wow!", which should provide lots of room for creative expression. Deadline for submissions is October 7, which is much earlier than last year, so students can start planning their projects now.
The projects will be submitted to judges in the community, and the strongest works will proceed to district, state, and national competition. The national PTA organization gives out 18 Awards of Excellence in each arts area-three for each grade division.
- Award of Excellence recipients receive a $200 cash award and a silver-plated Reflections medallion. Up to five Awards of Merit may be given in each grade division of each arts area.
- Award of Merit recipients receive a silver-plated Reflections medallion.
- Six Outstanding Interpretation Award recipients-one from each arts area-are chosen from among all of the Award of Excellence recipients. The six Outstanding Interpretation Awards recognize the most creative interpretation of the theme in each of the arts areas, regardless of grade division. The prizes for these top awards include an expense-paid trip to the national PTA convention, an $800 arts education award, and a gold-plated medallion.
For detailed contest rules or questions, contact Susan Paolo at spaolo@everestkc.net or 599-6278. |
Kindness Appreciated at the Teacher Breakfast
Grace Brown and Karen Rettig would like to thank all those that volunteered to bring an egg casserole, fruit, yogurt, bagels, juices, sweets, donuts and muffins in for a wonderful spread for the teacher breakfast. Everything was greatly appreciated. We also would like to thank those that helped set up and clean up. Great job. Our thanks also for our community businesses that donated to the cause. They included Steve's donuts, Mimi's Cafe, Hyvee, Price Chopper and La Petite. Please continue to patronize these establishments for their generosity to SMW. |

Cyber Bullying: What Parents Need To Know
Sponsored by the Parent Resource Center
Presenter: Randy Wiler, Leawood Police Department
As many as 80% of teens say they have no rules for using the internet in their homes. Cyber bullying can be a complicated issue, especially for parents who are not as familiar with instant messenger or chat rooms as their kids are. But, like other forms of bullying, cyber bullying can be prevented when kids know how to protect themselves and parents are educated.
Mr. Wiler co-founded the International Bullying Prevention Association in 2005 and served as vice-president through 2007. He was selected as the 2006 International DARE Officer of the year and is one of the pioneers of bullying prevention training in the United States.
