Tips to "Stress-Proof" Your Relationship
We know that relationships can be stressful in good economic times. Thanks to the economic problems facing our country today, many couples are experiencing even more stress. This added stress can weigh heavily on couples and create problems even in good relationships. Some couples react to stress by withdrawing while others, take their frustrations out on each other. What is important is how couples manage this stress instead of reacting to it. Here are some tips to help you "stress-proof" your relationship:
- Remember that you are not the only one feeling the pressures and stress in your relationship. Support each other...you're a team.
- Make your relationship a priority! Take time to focus on each other and nurture your relationship.
- Schedule times to talk to each other. Discuss your thoughts and feelings as well as possible solutions.
- Make time for fun and enjoy each other. Be creative...fun does not have to cost a thing.
- Focus your attention on the positive things in your life and relationship. Remember to have gratitude.

"Stress-Proof" Your Family TOO!
by Caroline Hatton, LMHC
When stress is involved, it is harder to be a healthy parent. Sometimes stress can cause our parenting to become too strict where a parent might raise their voice and become frustrated quickly. Other times, a parent may become too lenient and let more of the rules slide. Whatever the case, parenting styles are affected by stress and can impact all family members. So what can you do about this? First, it is most important to take care of yourself. Schedule time to de-stress with your spouse or on your own. This could be simple things such as exercising or reading. Next, talk to your children about how you are feeling and demonstrate healthy ways to cope. Children learn by actions more than words. So, if you yell when you are frustrated...they will do the same. Instead, you may say, "Mommy is overwhelmed right now. Why don't we all take a walk because this helps me feel better." At times, the daily stresses of life can be too much to take on and families look for assistance from others. Some examples include speaking to your physician or a therapist. One newer option is Family Coaching. Parent Coaches advise parents with kids of all ages on issues ranging from sleeping through the night to managing teenagers emotions. Family Directions, based in Tampa, Florida, offers in-home coaching to families, individuals, and even local groups to address stress, parenting and so much more. If you would like to find out more about how Coaching could support you and your family, feel free to call Family Directions at 813-915-1600 or contact us through our website: www.YourFamilyDirections.com.
