AFL-CIO Community Services and United Way Partnership                            February 2010
February is Black History Month

Black History MonthWomen in African American History ...
African American women played many roles in American history and none greater than during the Abolitionist movement.  En route to Freedom, about a free Negro woman and Harriet Tubman: A Moses to Her People, this takes place at an Underground Railroad fundraiser in 1861; are unique stories captured in two one-woman dramatic sketches.

These sketches, created by DeLanie Brewer, are available for scheduling for community groups and congregations.  Brewer, an accomplished mom, wife, actress and woman of faith; has partnered with the Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives (OFBCI) to tell these stories of individuals throughout America's black history.  These presentations will educate, motivate, and provide inspiration to be intentional in serving others.  For more information or to schedule En route To Freedom or Harriet Tubman, call 405-522-0606 or visit faithlinksok.org.  (PII Communication Service 1.19.2010)

Friends of the Library
A Message from Kay

It's getting closer to booksale time and I'd like to invite you to join
my Friends of the Library volunteer group: Friends of Kay Samaripa.  Check it out and if you want to work on my team at the booksale, select Customer Service as your volunteer assignment.

The Booksale began in 1980 and since that time has developed into
one of the largest events of its kind in the nation.  Hundreds of
thousands of books, magazines, audiotapes and videos sell for $1.00 or less. Admission is free and book lovers have a great time.  The Booksale opens to the public on Saturday and Sunday, February 20th  and 21st . A major advantage to volunteering is that on Thursday evening of Booksale weekend, Booksale volunteers are invited to a pre-sale party and given an opportunity to purchase a limited number of items before they go on sale
to the general public.

The Metropolitan Library System of Oklahoma County includes 12
libraries and five extension libraries.  Libraries include Belle Isle, Capitol Hill, Ralph Ellison, Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library and Southern Oaks in Oklahoma City, as well as Bethany, Choctaw, Del City, Edmond, Midwest City, Village and Warr Acres.  Extensions are located in the communities of Harrah, Jones, Luther and Nicoma Park and include Wright Library in Oklahoma City.  You can also reach us at www.metrolibrary.org.

About six million Americans receiving food stamps report they have no other income, according to an analysis of state data collected by The New York Times. In declarations that states verify and the federal government audits, they described themselves as unemployed and receiving no cash aid - no welfare, no unemployment insurance, and no pensions, child support or disability pay.

Nationally, 18 percent of food stamp recipients in states surveyed by the Times listed cash income of zero. In Oklahoma, according to data provided me by the Department of Human Services, 48,730 food stamp households reported zero income in June 2009. This is just under one in four - 23.4 percent - of all food stamp households. Of those non-income households, there was an almost equal mixture of households with children (47 percent) and without children (53 percent). Just under 100,000 people lived in these households in June, or about one in 37 Oklahomans.
