The Changing Face of Labor
1983-2009 By John Schmitt and Kris Warner
Over the last quarter century, the unionized workforces has changed dramatically, according to this new Center for Economic and Policy Research report. In 2008, union workers reflected trends in the workforce as a whole toward a greater share of women, Latinos, Asian Pacific Americans, older, more-educated workers, and a shift out of manufacturing toward services.
"The view that the typical union worker is a white male manufacturing worker may have been correct a quarter of a century ago, but it's not an accurate description of those in today's labor movement, " said John Schmitt, a CEPR Senior Economist and an author of the report.

How to Help the Uninsured Children in Our Community
It is estimated that 60,000 children in the state of Oklahoma who are eligible for the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) are not enrolled in the program. If you have contact with children in need, ask the parents if their children qualify for the school lunch program. If the answer is yes, ask the parents if the children have health insurance. If the answer is no, hand them an application for SCHIP. Applications can be found at okdhs.org or okhca.org. |
