Help Reduce Tobacco Use New State Plan Calls for Action
A new state plan urges all Oklahomans to help reduce the state's leading preventable cause of death - Tobacco. Announced by the Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Advisory Committee, the plan calls for reducing tobacco use rates in Oklahoma to below the national rates by 2012. Achieving this goal would result in 200,000 fewer adult and youth tobacco users in the state.
"Almost every Oklahoman has had loved ones die from tobacco use, " said Commissioner of Heath Dr. Terry Cline, chairperson of the Advisory Committee. "Because tobacco use affects all of us in some way, everyone has a role to play in reaching the ambitious goal of this new state plan."

Back-to-School Immunizations
The new school year is just weeks away. Now is the time to check your child's immunization record and schedule needed vaccinations with your health care provider or local county health department.
"Vaccinating our children against preventable diseases is one of the most important ways parents and caregivers can protect their children," said State Health Commissioner Dr. Terry Cline. "In the past 50 years, increased public awareness about the importance of childhood immunizations has helped eliminate major outbreaks of diseases like polio and measles."
