The Pulse
Welcome to March's edition of The Pulse. This is the first of a series of updates planned for release this year.

Checking our pulse is essential in monitoring our Vital Signs. The Pulse highlights a specific indicator of human well-being that is contained in United Way of Central Oklahoma's Vital Signs report or is being noticed through United Way's work in the community.
Oklahoma's Economy
Foreclosures and bankruptcy filings in Oklahoma are on the rise while active drilling sites continue to decrease.

Foreclosure filings rose in February, with one in every 1,576 homes being foreclosed on, a 5.9% increase from January. While the filings are up, fewer homeowners are losing their homes than just one year ago.

Of the 11,224 Oklahoma bankruptcy filings in 2008, 96% were non-business.

drilActive drilling sites continue a decline that started in late 2008. February's 130 total active sites, fell from 152 in January.

United Way's Response
United Way's focus on Successful Families includes achieving financial stability. In order to help working families achieve this, United Way of Central Oklahoma is partnering with Oklahoma City University to provide free income tax preparation.

Low-income families could be eligible for as much as $4,824 in tax credits through the Earned Income Tax Credit or EITC.  The credit equals as much as 10% of some families' annual incomes. In 2007, central Oklahoma families received more than $3,800,000 through the EITC program.

Trained volunteers provide this assistance, on Saturdays only, through April 11 at the United Way offices located at 1444 NW 28th Street beginning at 9 a.m.

To find out more about the EITC program, contact Rachel Klein or call 405-523-3534.

United Way of Central Oklahoma continues to focus on developing Strong Families so that all individuals and families have resources to achieve financial stability as well as access to counseling, debt management, education, job training, and housing.
