Reflection and Resolution
reflectionAs the new year comes to a close many of us will take this time of the year to reflect on what has gone past ... we certainly will consider the lost opportunities when we could have been the best we could be ~ kicking ourselves along the way. But, there are also the memories that we will forever treasure in our hearts ~ the warmth flows through our bodies and a smile appears. We all need to find time for reflection ... it is an opportunity to find the stillness within. Remember, we are forever a work in progress.

As in the familiar Christmas Carol, we too experience a similar feeling during our reflection time, as our thoughts go from past, present, to future. We begin to identify areas of our lives that we want to develop and grow in the coming year. Our reflections lead us to our resolutions ... which takes us from mindfulness in the present moment to developing an action plan for where we plan to go in 2009.

Traditionally, new year resolutions are basically the procedure to follow the changes while taking lessons from the past. Here are some areas to consider: be healthy; spend more time with family; quit smoking; quit drinking; enjoy life more ~ have fun; get out of debt; learn something new; go for a vacation; help others; get organized ... just to name a few.

Making resolutions is a cleansing ritual of self-assessment and repentance
that demands personal honesty and, ultimately, reinforces humility.

Action Steps for Resolutions: Doing vs. Being
mtrangeCO
I was reading Guideposts (Jan 2009) and came across the following story titled, Listed by Jan Weeks of Grand Junction, Colorado. It reminded me of how sometimes we make our resolutions complicated and end up feeling frustrated  because we aren't able to follow through. Well, this story reminds me of how instead of the "doing" parts of resolutions, maybe we ought to focus on the "being."

I am a detailed list-maker, Scraps of paper litter my house, reminding me that I need to prune the plum trees, renew my library books, grout the bathtub and take care of all those other "have-tos." Lists of books to read, lists of gifts to buy and cards to send, and lists of things to put on my website. You name it, I have got a list for it.

Then in church one Sunday the pastor talked about a very different kind of list: a "to-be" list. He said that most of us are so busy doing that we forget to be ~ to be kind, to be peaceful, to be centered, to be loving. It was such a great idea I immediately put it on my mental to-do list! A perfect way for me to start the new year, I thought.

Now, every morning before I do anything else, I start out by thinking about what I can "be." I can choose to be calm in the midst of drama. I can be kind even when someone treats me unkindly. I can be loving when my patience is tested. Today, when I focus on my to-be list, all of the other lists become so much more doable.

Take a moment each morning and focus mindfully on your "to-be" list ... your day will become more manageable and experiences of joy will bless your life!
