Recognitions and Events
Jack H. McCall
Attend a book signing and reading with Jack H. McCall Jr. at Union Ave Books on Tuesday, July 24, at 6 p.m. Mcall is editor of Pacific Time on Target, the gritty combat memoir of Marine Corps artilleryman and forward observer, Christopher Donner. As a married man and Stanford graduate student nearing thirty, Christopher Donner would likely have qualified for an exemption from the draft. Like most of his generation, however, he responded promptly to the call to arms after Pearl Harbor. His wartime experiences in the Pacific Theater were seared into his consciousness, and in early 1946 he set out to preserve those memories while they were still fresh. Sixty-five years later, Donner s memoir is now available to the public. Union Ave Bookstore is located at 517 Union Ave in downtown Knoxville. Call (865) 951-2180
Linda Parsons Marion Linda Parsons Marion's poem "Snapshot" was chosen recently by Ted Kooser, former U.S. Poet Laureate, for American Life in Poetry, a weekly newspaper and online column featuring contemporary American poetry ( http://www.americanlifeinpoetry.org/ ).
Margy Ragsdale
KWG member Margy Ragsdale is directing a play, "Tuna Does Vegas," as part of the Clayton Center Community Theater Festival. The performances at the Festival are 6 PM on July 28, 2 PM on July 29. After the Festival, Theatre Knoxville will take its play for an August 3 - 29 run at its Gay Street theater.
Jay Searcy
KWG member Jay Searcy's book, "The Last Reunion, was featured in Ina Hughes' Sunday Books column on July 22. Searcy, Oak Ridge High School Class of 1952, has become a memory-keeper for the 11,000 Oak Ridge children who lived in isolation with their families during World War II's race for the atomic bomb. Now in their mid to late 70s, they are becoming the only storytellers left who bear witness to this crucial chapter in American history. Searcy's collection of his classmates' stories culminated in the publication of The Last Reunion: The Class of 1952 Comes Home to the Secret City. Humorist Judy DiGregorio, author of LIFE AMONG THE LILLIPUTIANS, MEMORIES OF A LOOSE WOMAN, and JEST JUDY (CD), is the guest speaker for a Brown Bag Lunch Seminar at the Y-12 National Security Complex on July 26 at Jack Case Center. She will speak on the humor-filled life. Judy will also be heard on the Tennessee Shines WDVX Live Radio Show on July 30 during the 7 PM show. She will read two of her humorous stories. |
