Speaks at Torch Club
Luncheon Jan. 19 

 

Terry Shaw, president of the Knoxville Writers' Guild, will be the guest speaker at this month's Knoxville Torch Club meeting. Shaw will speak about the process of turning fact into fiction as a novelist. Shaw, a former editor of the Niagara Gazette in Niagara Falls, NY, is author of the award winning novel, "The Way Life Should Be" (Touchstone, 2007) about an editor's investigation of a murder in a small Maine town. Shaw is now working on a crime novel about Niagara Falls, N.Y. The meeting begins at noon on Jan. 19th at the Orangery Restaurant. Entry to the meeting is free and lunch can be ordered from the menu. 2nd Annual Old Gray
Poetry Contest 
In Partnership with the Rogers Foundation, Old Gray Cemetery announces its Second Annual Old Gray Cemetery Poetry Contest. Theme of the contest is "Portraits from the Past". The contest is open to East Tennessee residents only. There are two categories for submissions: Category One is for high school students 16 years or older. It offers 1st & 2nd prizes of $50 & $25 Category Two is for adults and offers 1st, 2nd, & 3rd prizes of $100, $75, & $50. Poems must be postmarked by March 23, 2012 and mailed to:

Winners will be invited to read their poems on Sunday, April 22, at 2 p.m at the Cemetery. Deborah Scaperoth is the 2012 Poetry Prize Judge.

Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize 
The North Carolina Writers' Network is now accepting submissions for the 2012 Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize. This annual award is administered by poet Anthony S. Abbott, the Charles A. Dana Professor Emeritus of English at Davidson College in Davidson, NC.
The Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize honors internationally celebrated North Carolina novelist Thomas Wolfe. The winner receives $1,000 and possible publication in The Thomas Wolfe Review. The competition is open to all writers regardless of geographical location or prior publication. The postmark deadline is January 30, 2012. Submit two copies of a story of no more than 12 pages with a $25 entry fee ($15 for NCWN members) by January 30. For complete guidelines, visit www.ncwriters.org .

Glenn Meade Speaks Feb 2

Don't miss the KWG meeting, Thursday, Feb.2!  Novelist and playwright Glenn Meade, author of eight internationally best-selling novels, including "The Second Messiah" (Howard Books, 2011) and "Resurrection Day" (Coronet, 2003), will speak. The event, which will be open to the public, will be at 7 p.m. at the Laurel Theater, at the corner of Laurel Avenue and 16th Streets (in Fort Sanders). A $2 donation is requested at the door. Query Letter Workshop Offered 
It's not too late to register for Cyn Mobley's Jan. 28 workshop on writing query letters! The  "USA Today" bestselling author of more than thirty books  said the purpose of the 9 a.m. to noon workshop  is "to get the agent or editor to request the entire manuscript. Nothing more, nothing less."  Place:  Redeemer Church of Knoxville, 1642 Highland Ave. Cost: $65 for members of the Knoxville Writers' Guild and $75 for nonmembers. Workshop Helps You Sharpen Social Media Skills 
Need help with social media skills? KWG is offering help! Attend a workshop Saturday, Feb. 25,  led by Dale Mackey and Shawn Poynter.  You'll learn about self branding, blogging, Facebook & Twitter, integrating media and shooting for the web.  Time and place: 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Redeemer Church, 1642 Highland Avenue. "A Tapestry of Voices"
 
Several writers will share their poems, stories and essays published in "A Tapestry of Voices: an East Tennessee Anthology" at Union Ave Books from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 22.

The diversity theme of the anthology will be reflected in the reading, which will feature both prose and verse on a wide range of subjects. Readers will include:
  • Judith Duvall, reading her poem, "City Friends," and her short story, "Different Rules".
  • Lucy Sieger, reading her essay about spiritual polygamy
  • Artress Bethany White, a poet and assistant professor at Carson-Newman College
  • Jennifer Alldredge, reading her story, "Tarantella."

Kay Newton and Doris Ivie edited "A Tapestry of Voices.," assisted by Martha Yarnell (chair), Kim West (designer), Meg Bensey, Carole Anne Borges, Duvall and Cathy Kodra. Pamela Schoenewaldt  
Pamela Schoenewaldt opens the spring Writers in the Library series on January 23 with a reading from her historical novel, "When We Were Strangers". The novel follows a young needleworker in the 1880s, forced to leave her mountain village in Southern Italy, who endures a rough passage through American cities to a very different life and work in San Francisco. The public is invited to the reading at 7:00 pm, Monday, January 23, in UT's Hodges Library auditorium.

Workshops, Typewriters

 

 Writers' Workshop of Asheville
A new season of workshops is already underway at the Writers' Workshop of Asheville and Charlotte, NC! Founded  in 1985 to promote writers and writing through a diverse program of literary events, the non-profit literary center in Western North Carolinaa has served more than  21,000 adults, teens and children in workshops, seminars, readings, contests and retreats.  Upcoming events this winter and spring begin with a Jan. 28 workshop in Asheville called  "From Inspiration to Publication:  Poetry and the Writing Process" led by Scott Owens. Beginning and experienced poets may attend. The event will be 10 a.m until 4 p.m. at 387 Beaucatcher Rd., Asheville, NC, 28805. Cost is $75/$70 members.
