A Tapestry of Voices

to be launched Oct. 6

Attend the Thursday, Oct. 6, KWG meeting and enjoy the launch of the Guild's eighth literary anthology, A Tapestry of Voices: the 2011 Anthology of the Knoxville Writers' Guild.  Several contributors will read, including poets Marilyn Kallet and Linda Parsons Marion and novelist Pamela Schoenewaldt. The meeting, which will be open to the public, will be at 7 p.m. at the Laurel Theater, at the corner of Laurel Avenue and 16th Streets.  A $2 donation is requested at the door. The building is handicapped accessible.

The theme for this year's anthology is "diversity."  Contributors include both well-known and previously unpublished writers and artists. Familiar to many readers are Cynthia Markert, whose photograph of the Henley Street Bridge deconstruction is on the cover, and writers Connie Jordan Green, Brian Griffin, Hector Qirko, and Jack Rentfro. The anthology also provides a springboard for writers whose work has never before been published.

Edited by Kay Newton and Doris Ivie, backed by a committee including Martha Yarnell (Committee Chair), Kim West (Designer), Meg Bensey, Carole Anne Borges, Judith Duvall, and Cathy Kodra, the book will make a great holiday gift for anyone interested in East Tennessee. It will be on sale at the October 6 launch and reading. Info: Kay Newton, Editor, Kat_New@msn.com.

Anthology Reading at KMA Oct. 7

Contributors to A Tapestry of Voices will read on the museum's 3rd Floor from 5:30 till 8 pm, while the band "Jenna and her Cool Friends" performs downstairs in the Great Hall. Readers will include Mark Compton, reading an excerpt from his forthcoming novel, Shortcake; Michael Gill, reading his prose memoir, "Strange Pigtails"; Melanie Harless, reading her poem, "Sunday Conversation with my Neighbor"; and William Isom II, reading his poem, "Appalachian Mulatto."

Willa Schneberg, who has two poems in our anthology, lives in Portland, OR, and won't be able to make it here for the launch. You can hear one of her poems (from another book) read on Garrison Keillor's  "A Writers' Almanac"  on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 11:55 a.m. on WUOT. You can also listen to it on podcast at http://writersalmanac.publicradio.org. The poem to be featured is called, "Spilled Milk".
