"Research for Writers" Workshop Sept. 17 

It's not too late to sign up for the KWG workshop, "Research for Writers" to be Saturday, September 17. Led by novelist Pamela Schoenewaldt and research librarian Jamie Osborn, the workshop will be 10 a.m. to noon at the Redeemer Church, 1642 Highland Avenue in Fort Sanders.

Osborn, who works at Lawson McGhee Library, will discuss the wealth of research resources
for writers of fiction, nonfiction, memoir, family history,

children's literature, poetry, and spoken arts
that are availabe free through the Knox County Public Library and other regional archives and collecitons. The librarian also will delve into the limits of standard Internet-based research.
 
Schoenewaldt will explain what agents and editors look for in the well-researched novel. She'll also share the process she used in writing When We Were Strangers, published this year by HarperCollins. Osborn has a bachelor's degree in History from East Tennessee State University and a master's in Information Sciences from the University of Tennessee. Schoenewaldt taught creative writing at University of Maryland, European Division and the University of Tennessee.

Enjoy KWG Talent at Southern Festival of Books! 

 

Make plans to attend the 23rd annual Southern Festival of Books,a free, three-day celebration of the written word in Nashville, Oct. 14-16 that will draw an expected crowd of 20,000. Headlining the event will be writers T.A. Barron, Chris Bohjalian, Pseudonymous Bosch, Charles Frazier, Walter Mosley, Tom Perrotta and Nashville's own Ann Patchett.

Many writers who are part of the KWG community will be featured, including Bob Cumming, Jeff Gordon, Connie Green, David Hunter, Marilyn Kallet, Linda Marion, Pamela Schoenewaldt and Pam Uschuk. Presented by Humanities Tennessee, a non-profit organization that promotes humanities education across Tennessee, the Southern Festival of Books will be at Legislative Plaza in downtown Nashville at the steps of the Tennessee State Capitol. Find Your Funny Bone!  


Plan to attend the Tennessee Mountain Writers Workshop,"Finding Your Funny Bone"  led by humor writer Judy DiGregorio on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9:30A.M. - 12:30 P.M. at the United Way of Anderson County Office, 161 Robertsville Rd, Oak Ridge.
                                            
Using humorous readings and short writing assignments, DiGregorio will explore the purpose of humor, review the different styles of humor, discuss what makes us laugh, and identify possible markets for humor writing.

DiGregorio's work has appeared in THE ARMY TIMES, CHICKEN SOUP BOOKS, THE WRITER, BYLINE MAGAZINE, and numerous anthologies and other publications. She is the author of LIFE AMONG THE LILLIPUTIANS and MEMORIES OF A LOOSE WOMAN from Celtic Cat Publishing. Southern Festival of Books invited her as guest speaker in 2009 and 2010.  Judy's new CD, JEST JUDY, with stories from both her books, was recently released by Celtic Cat.

Call for Entries!



Fault Zone: Stepping Up to the Edge, an anthology of stories, is volume II in the San Francisco/ Peninsula branch of the California Writers Club Fault Zone series and will be published January 2012.  Short story submissions are invited to the 2nd annual short story contest. Your piece should relate to the anthology's theme in some way.

"We're perched on the edge of the San Andreas Fault, on the edge of the Pacific Rim. Will we fall in? Or is Fault Zone more of a comment on human frailties and foibles? Interpret as you wish and have fun. We can't wait to see it!" say contest spokesmen.

Rules: 

  • Word count should not exceed 2,500 words.
  • Entries will be read blind. Do not put your name anywhere on your manuscript. Put your title on every page of your manuscript, along with the page numbers.
  • Include two 3 x 5 cards with your name, address AND EMAIL.
  • Send to: CWC Fault Zone Contest, PO Box 853, Belmont, CA  94002-0853.
  • Postmark deadline is September 30, 2011. Entry fee is $15.
  • Previously published work will be considered. A novel excerpt must stand on its own.

First Prize is $300 and publication in Fault Zone, Stepping Up to the Edge, Second Prize is $100, Third Prize is $50.
