KWG News
Sports Editor John Adams
Tells About Writing Life John Adams, sports editor for the Knoxville News Sentinel, will talk at the Sept. 1 meeting of the Knoxville Writers' Guild about his life as a sports columnist. The meeting, which is open to the public, will be at 7 p.m. at the handicap accessible Laurel Theater, on the corner of Laurel Avenue and 16th Street. A $2 donation is requested.
Louisiana native Adams began his newspaper career at age 15, writing for a newspaper called Citizen-Watchman. He returned to the paper as its editor after earning a bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University. Adams kept writing while serving in Vietnam in the U.S. Army, and then travelled the U.S. South afterward, writing for many newspapers. He headed northward to cover sporting events for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and wrote a column called "Steeler Beat."
At the News Sentinel Adams enjoys writing candidly about how he sees the sports world. He says, "Every columnist knows a good article is a controversial one." We look forward to his sharing the world of journalism at the September meeting of the Knoxville Writers' Guild.

 Anthology News Literary Anthology Launching!
The Knoxville Writers' Guild will launch its eighth literary anthology, A Tapestry of Voices: the 2011 Anthology of the Knoxville Writers' Guild, at the Oct. 6 Guild meeting at 7 p.m. at the Laurel Theatre. Several contributors will read from the book that evening. The theme for this year's anthology is "diversity." Poems, essays, photographs, short stories, song lyrics, and even a novel chapter are represented. Contributors include Cynthia Markert, Connie Jordan Green, Brian Griffin, Marilyn Kallet, Linda Parsons Marion, Hector Qirko, and Jack Rentfro, among others. Portrayed in the anthology are an encounter with a Siamese twin, a ride on the night bus out Magnolia Avenue with a woman going home from work, and conversations at an Oak Ridge book club. Sitting in your armchair with this volume, you can travel from the Smokies to Paris to Greece to Old Mexico. The book's contributors live in far-flung places, but they all have one thing in common: a connection with East Tennessee. The anthology provides a forum for many whose work has never before been published. Each KWG collection in the past has served as a springboard for new writers. Kay Newton and Doris Ivie edited the book, assisted by Martha Yarnell (Committee Chair), Kim West (Designer), Meg Bensey, Carole Anne Borges, Judith Duvall, and Cathy Kodra. It will be on sale at the October 6 launch and reading. Anthology Reading at KMA On Friday, October 7, the Knoxville Museum of Art will host a Guild anthology event alongside its regularly-scheduled "Alive After Five" program. Contributors to A Tapestry of Voices will read on the museum's 3rd Floor from 5:30 till 8 p.m., while the band "Jenna and her Cool Friends" performs downstairs in the Great Hall. Among the readers who will present their work are Mark Compton, reading part of a chapter from his forthcoming novel, Shortcake; Michael Gill, reading his prose memoir, Strange Pigtails; Melanie Harless, reading her poem, "Sunday Conversation with my Neighbor"; and William Isom II, reading his poem, "Appalachian Mulatto." Info: Email Kay Newton, Editor, at Kat_New@msn.com.
Anthology Help Needed The Anthology Committee is looking for volunteers to assist with marketing the book scheduled for release October 6. If you can help, contact Kay Newton, kat_new@msn.com. |
