Hebert Leads Workshop on First-Time Publishing
| Chris Hebert |
The Knoxville Writers' Guild will sponsor the workshop, "You've Written a Book, Now What?" with author and editor Chris Hebert on Saturday, June 4 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Redeemer Church, 1642 Highland Ave. Cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members.
"Writing a book is just the first of many challenges," Hebert said. "Having written it, what do you do next? There are as many different types of outlets for books as there are types of books themselves. It can be hard for a writer-especially a first-time writer-to know where to begin." For example, should you try to find an agent? Should you aim for a major commercial house or for a small nonprofit press? When is self-publishing the most appropriate route? "In this workshop we'll discuss these questions and others," he said. "And we'll talk about how to think about your own work in the way publishers do." Hebert earned an M.F.A in creative writing from the University of Michigan. Since 2001 he has been an acquisitions editor at the University of Michigan Press. There, working with scholars, novelists, and nonfiction writers, he has published and edited a wide-ranging list of award-winning books for both scholarly and general readers. His novel, The Boiling Season, is forthcoming from HarperCollins in 2012. To sign up, go to www.knoxvillewritersguild.org or send your check to KWG Workshops, P.O. Box 10326, Knoxville TN 37939-0326. Actor, Producer Mike Stanley Speaks at KWG June 2 Meeting
Award-winning producer and actor Mike Stanley will speak at the June 2 meeting of the Knoxville Writers' Guild about key tools that helped him become a successful creative artist.
The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. at the Laurel Theater, on the corner of Laurel Ave. and 16th Street. A two dollar donation is requested. The building is handicap accessible.
Stanley will talk about the forming of the production company Skyshot Films. Created in 2010 with the help of Kelly Burke, Skyshot Films has won 15 awards in local film festivals. Stanley was co-producer and winner of best supporting actor for the company's 2010 short comedy, "Lennie Liebowitz," which was filmed in KNoxville and presented at the Downtown Film Festival at the Clayton Center for the Arts.
Skyshot Films is now shooting its first feature-length film (not yet titled) and will begin production on "Let Me Count the Ways" in October of this year. Skyshot Films can be found on Facebook and at skyshotfilms.com.
A native of North Carolina, Mike Stanley began his professional theatrical career at the age of 19, as an actor. He interned at the historic Barter Theatre in Abington, VA. Six months later he had his first starring film role, alongside John Turturro and Sam Rockwell, in "Box of Moon Light" (1996).
Stanley attended Milligan College in Johnson City, TN. He moved to Los Angeles in 2000 and briefly worked as an improv actor/staff writer for C to the B Productions at Paramount Pictures. Later he wrote the "Within Trilogy," a drama about a Native American spirit who haunts its ancestors. As a producer, he pitched the project as "Three Films, Three Genres." The first of these motion pictures has been made and the next two are in development, seeking funds.
