Crazyhorse

Crazy Horse Fiction Prize / Linda Hull Memorial Poetry Prize

Mail in or upload online up to twenty-five pages of fiction or up to three poems (up to 10 pages total of poetry). Reading fee per manuscript includes a one-year/two-issue print and e-book subscription to Crazyhorse starting with the next issue.

Prize: $2000/category+pub

Deadline: January 15, 2011

Fee: $16 (includes one-year subscription)

Our Stories

Richard Bausch Short Fiction Contest

Don't just submit to a contest not get anything in return--find out how to improve your story. Your writing and your money is worth at least that, right? If your story is not chosen for publication, we give you a customized review. We're going to tell you about your plot, the dialogue, the beginning, and the ending. We're going to give you an MFA quality review for your story.

Prize: $400+pub

Deadline: October 1 - January 15 (annual)

Creative Nonfiction

The Night

Creative Nonfiction and The Salt Institute are seeking essays about "The Night": It was a dark and stormy night; Strangers in the Night; the night sky, etc. Essays must be vivid and dramatic; they should combine a strong and compelling narrative with a significant element of research or information, and reach for some universal or deeper meaning in personal experiences. We're looking for well-written prose, rich with detail and a distinctive voice.

Prize: $5,000/2,500+pub

Judge: Susan Orlean

Deadline: Postmark January 31, 2011

Fee: $20 or $25 for 4-issue subscription

Glimmer Train

Very Short Fiction Award

For stories of up to 3,000 words. The category will be open to submissions for one full month, form the first day through midnight (Pacific time) of the last day of the month. When we accept a story for publication, we are purchasing first-publication rights.

Prize: $1,200+pub+copies/$500/$300

Deadline: January 1-31 (annual)

Fee: $15/story

The Iowa Review

The Iowa Review Awards

The Iowa Review holds a yearly writing contest in Poetry, Fiction, and Nonfiction. Submit up to 25 pages of prose (double-spaced) or 10 pages of poetry (one poem or several, but no more than one poem per page). Work must be previously unpublished. Simultaneous submissions are fine assuming you inform us of acceptance elsewhere.

Prize: $1000/500+pub

Judges: Claudia Rankine (poetry), Allan Gurganus (fiction), Patricia Hampl (nonfiction)

Deadline: Postmark January 1-31 (annual)

The Journal

William Allen Creative Nonfiction Contest

This annual competition honors the work of William Allen, the founding editor of The Journal. All styles, subject matter, and forms are welcome. The maximum word count is 6500 words. Please double-space all entries. For a list of winners, include an SASE.

Prize: $500+pub

Deadline: Postmark January 31 (annual)

Fee: $10

New Millennium Writings

New Millennium Awards for Fiction, Poetry, and Nonfiction

Winners of NMW Awards are showcased along with interviews, profiles and tributes to writers such as Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., Khaled Hosseini, J. D. Salinger, Julia Glass, Shel Silverstein, George Garrett, Ken Kesey, John Updike, and Cormac McCarthy.

Prize: $1,000/category+pub
