Dog Days of Summer
|
|
They're called the dog days of summer-those hot, lazy days when you want to climb into a hammock with a cold drink and a good book and stay there for a very long time. We're asking you to spend a few of those days out of the hammock and with us at Schwartz for a different set of dog days this summer in honor of the family dog.
On Wednesday, July 2, 7 p.m., meet Jana Kohl and Baby the poodle at our Brookfield shop. Jana adopted Baby after learning firsthand about the terrible conditions dogs in puppy mills live in. Baby, who lost one of her legs due to mistreatment she suffered during her time in a puppy mill, is now the unofficial "spokesdog" for the Humane Society of the United States. She and Jana work hard to lobby politicians to strengthen laws that regulate puppy mills like the one Baby was in, and now they're traveling the country in support of their book, A Rare Breed of Love, to tell Baby's story and show you how to help other dogs like her.
Then, on Saturday, August 2 enjoy a whole day of canine craziness at Brookfield's Doggy Day. Find out more about our favorite dog books from informative scientific books to titles that are just plain fun during a talk presented by Schwartz booksellers. Other events throughout the day include a discussion of Terry Kay's To Dance with the White Dog, and a special presentation by Sarah Sirios, Executive Director of Wisconsin Academy for Graduate Service Dogs (WAG). We'll also have face-painting and a special story time featuring doggy stories for kids, and Petilicious Dog Bakery will be on hand with their homemade biscuits and other tasty snacks. Well-behaved dogs are welcome!
What to do in the weeks between our events? Why not climb into you hammock with some of our favorite books about dogs? You can find out more about these titles and other dog-related books at Doggy Day, but for now, here is a list to get you started:
Dogtown: A Sanctuary for Rescued Dogs by Best Friends Animal Shelter-Meet the dogs of Dogtown, the nation's largest no-kill animal shelter as seen on the TV show of the same name

How to get to Schwartz in Brookfield during Construction
Can you believe that both our access roads have construction? We can't either. That said we'd love for you to visit. Here are the easiest ways to get in and out of our shopping center, the V. Richards Plaza, during construction.
Entering from the East Traveling West on Bluemound Road, make a left on Thomas Lane. This a stoplight intersection, which generally has an operating left-turn signal. You will be entering an access road, where you should continue west for several blocks until you reach the V. Richards Plaza.
Entering from the West. Traveling East on Bluemound Road, it is easiest to enter the Plaza near Pedro's Restaurante.
Exiting to the East Make a right out of the Plaza near the Pedro's Restaurante.
Exiting to the West You can currently exit at Calhoun Road near V. Richards and make a left onto Bluemound Road. You can also head towards Pedro's and continue on the access road (Reinders Drive) to Thomas Lane where there is a stoplight. Exit left onto Bluemound Road.
From the North or South Calhoun Road is currently closed, due to construction. We suggest you take either Brookfield Road to the West, or Moorland Road/Pilgrim Parkway to the East, and access the Schwartz Bookshop via Bluemound Road.

American
Nerd: The Story of my People
Benjamin Nugent
"In Ben Nugent's funny, insightful look at nerd culture in
America, you'll learn where the word came from, why people like
Dungeons & Dragons, what machines and order have to do with nerdiness,
why hipsters adopt nerd style, and go on an outing with the Society
for Creative Anachronism which has actual kingdoms across the globe.
As interesting as all that is, my favorite parts of the book were the
personal moments when Nugent described his friends and himself as kids
in the '80s and '90s, and the betrayal that sent them on different
paths in life. It's a great mix of history and humor for nerds and
non-nerds alike."
