Greetings from Carol

I can't pass by a design magazine without at least a quick peak of what's inside.  It's that passion that led to my redesign/staging business.   In this monthly newsletter,  I  provide a quick sketch of the latest innovative designs and color trends that have caught my eye from the pages of Architectural Digest, Donimo, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Real Simple,Veranda, and others.

I'll also include contact information such as web sites and other references so you, the reader, can follow up in more depth.

I would hope this grows interactive as you send me your ideas or questions.   Also, check out our website for additional information and ideas.  And, please forward this on to others.

COLOR TREND! I'm seeing lavender everywhere - from advertisements to showcased walls and fabrics.  Also,  floral themed fabrics are being shown in more of the magazines.  Seems it's your pick - the ultra modern glass-beaded wall tiles and metallic look. . . or the softer pastel florals.

While on the subject of color.  Appears choosing wall color is one of the hardest selections most homeowners face.  "So," you say, "I'll just choose white."  Not so  easy.  Benjamin Moore, for example, offers about 150 versions of, yes, white!  (The Last Words, House Beautiful March 08).    So, what are you to do?  Follow the lead of major designers:  keep trying.  I always recommend purchasing several large pieces of poster board and minimum size paint samples.  Paint each board with a selection.  Tack these to the wall and view at different times of day.  That way you can eliminate those that change appearance away from your desired effect.

DESIGN TREND!  The latest trend I'm noticing in recent issues is the lack of formal design.  More and more, the rooms illustrated in the design publications are compilations of favorite items or collectible art and furnishings.  Which is exactly what excites me about the redesign concept!  The challenge is always to bring a cohesive feel to clients' own collections; editing here and there and maybe adding a few well chosen accessories to complete the look.

CONSIDERING THE PURCHASE OF AN OLDER HOME?  While I'm a big fan of owning real estate, a home doesn't come with its own handy man to handle emergencies from a plumbing or roof leak to the garage door that won't open when you're already late for work.  Hometruths in the Spring 2008 issue of O At Home points out that "charm is a synonym for things-that-eventually-will-break and they-don't-make-parts-for-that-anymore."   If you are a new buyer, or you're moving from a condo to your own home, just remember to budget additional reserves after mortgage, taxes, and insurance for those eventual repairs.
