Welcome Campers! 85th Season at Camp Tanadoona Arrives
On June 15 Camp
Tanadoona opened its
gates to the 85th season of campers. They were met by a team of
energized counselors, who had anxiously anticipated this day after weeks of
training. "I'm looking forward to meeting all the amazing kids at camp," said
camp counselor Biscuit -- a sentiment echoed by all the counselors during
training.

These 75 campers transformed Camp into a bustling community
of activity. All the essential camping activities were in full swing; campers
were swimming, canoeing, playing sports, practicing archery, and making crafts.
Special themes were also part of the fun. Our littlest campers got
to exercise their creativity by transforming into "Tanadoona Heros" with super
powers and home-made hero suits (see photo).
Camp
Tanadoona summer camp
operates from June 15 - August 21. For ages 5 - 15. Offering Day Camp,
Overnight Camp, and Northwoods Adventures.

Camp Fire Youth Hold on to Health 5 Clubs Celebrate Year of Healthy Living
Families from five Camp Fire Clubs recently celebrated a
year's worth of healthy living with nutritious feasts made by their children. These
clubs were part of a special initiative called Hold on to Health that was created through a partnership with
MetLife and Camp Fire USA National Headquarters.
Throughout the year, the 50 youth in these clubs were guided
by their club leaders in issues of personal wellness. Once a week they gathered
around a special cookbook and chose fun,
healthy recipes to make together. Some of the favorites included Breakfast
Burritos and "Balls of Energy," which was banana, peanut butter, wheat germ,
and nuts mashed and rolled into balls. They also spent the year moving
their bodies with fun exercises and energetic activities.

Youth naturally enjoy
being active, and when it's fun they can't resist. However, with less and less
opportunities to be engaged and active, obesity has become a major health
concern in children. The prevalence of youth at-risk for obesity has tripled in the past 20 years and now exceeds 30%. This epidemic could have devastating effects on future generations. That's what makes the
simple activities being done by the youth in these clubs so important. They are learning a lifetime of healthy living skills.
Thank you to Camp Fire USA National Headquarters, MetLife, and our supporters for making this program possible.

Youth Workers Unite Camp Fire Leads Effort for St. Paul Neighborhood to Prepare Youth Workers for Summer of Programming

On June 10, over 150 youth workers
from 13 organizations from the East Side of St. Paul were united in a training workshop.
This was the first workshop of its type, which combined area resources to best
equip these individuals with skills for successfully working with youth. The
effort was organized by the East Side Network Café (ESNC), a collaborative of
21 youth-serving organizations, including Camp Fire USA Minnesota Council,
which has been leading the group since 2008.
The workshop strengthened community connections among youth
workers on the East Side, as they met and
learned side-by-side about various topics ranging from "Summer Games" to "Ethics
and Boundaries." Uniting youth workers helps
put the pieces together so everyone understands the patchwork of resources
involved in healthy youth development. Working together also builds the
confidence of everyone involved. "It lets them know that what they do is
important," explained Patti Schwartz, the Youth and Family Specialist at St. Paul Parks and Recreation. "Plus, this
workshop is packed full of good information."
At the end of the day, each participant left having gained a
few more skills for helping youth succeed in their programs. Additionally, they
started building a network of supporters within their community who are all
working to develop healthy youth - because, it takes a village.
Thank you to The McKnight Foundation for financially sustaining the East Side Network Café.
We'd also like to thank the following workshop sponsors:
Metropolitan
State University, Blink Bonnie, CommonBond Communities, University of Minnesota
Extension Service's Youth Work Institute, Urban 4H Youth Development, Evergreen Community Partners, St. Paul Parks and
Recreation, and Community Design Center.
