Just got back from the Skittles House, aka my Florida home, aptly named due to the many colors within - no surprise there, right? I hadn't been there all summer and it was such a busy summer that I needed some exhale-happy-hermit time. August found me delivering many of my different topics from inspiration to life balance, to DiSC personality training to presentation skills (FYI, Speakers School this month!).

Had a gal's nite out to celebrate Mary Hoffman's upcoming nuptials (l to r: Michele Goldsmith, moi, Mary Hoffman, Sandy Rueve) at the hot new Paris Club, then on to the famous (or is it infamous?) Baton Show (gay burlesque).
Work took me to Cleveland for three gigs in two days and the chance to perform (speak) on the main stage of the House of Blues (photo at top) - fun yet challenging for a speech. (Here I am at right with Dave Rosevelt (l) and Matt Henretta (r) of Centric Consulting).
Also spoke for Equity Engineering , (below with David Osage and Gabriel Ortiz). I'll be off to work with Equity's Houston office in a few weeks Here I am below with Eric Clemons from Acroment Technologies, LLC in Cleveland. It's always great to work in my proverbial backyard, and here I am in Chicago where I spoke to Jerry Folz's Vistage group as part of the Leadership Series (pictured below with member, Joel Schneider from LTA Advisors). This Fall is a crazy-busy travel time and instead of focusing on the tedium of travel, I'm excited about all the friends I've been catching up with for dinners while on the road. I LOVE THIS BOOK!
| The Thank You Economy
by Gary Vaynerchuk I reviewed his first book Crush It in my May 2010 ezine and enjoyed this book just as much. The author talks about how companies of all sizes can scale personal one-on-one attention to their entire customer base, using social media platforms that carry consumer word of month. He has compelling evidence that we are entirely in a new business era that will not be about your advertising dollars but more about how companies can prove they care about their customers more than the competition. I particularly liked his assertion that one day every company will have a CCO, Chief Culture Officer, whose job will be to keep track of the needs of every single employee, and not in the HR sense. They will keep track of their needs, not through empty pep talks and token gifts but through individualized goal setting, strategizing for the future and constant confirmation that the employee is satisfied. I love this book!! |

TELE-CONVERSATION WITH JUDITH GLASER

Leadership Lessons from "42 Rules for Creating WE"
JUDITH E. GLASER started out her career at the age of 11 months when she was inducted into the Ripley's Believe It or Not Hall of Fame for balancing on one foot on her father's hand. Judith continues to apply her 'balancing skills' to her work with executives and their organizations. She now calls herself an organizational anthropologist - which means she digs around in other people's dirt - discovers gems more valuable and worth more than their owners ever realized - and helps them reframe, reorganize, restructure, and refocus people minds, hearts and relationships so they can become more successful than they ever imagined. She believes that evolution has designed us to be "WE-centric" Leaders. We know how to inspire others, we know how to collaborate, and we know how to innovate - but sometimes things go wrong. Join us to find out the secrets that tens of thousands of leaders around the globe are learning from Judith.
What you will learn...
 How to transform relationships
How to to get inside some else's secret fantasy world (this is not a sexual act)
How to change the trajectory of your future
October's guest: Merit Gest from CO talking about "Genetic Testing for Your Business." Retention and revenue ideas to see where your company might be at high risk in the future.

BIZ BYTES
|
My first three years of professional speaking was mostly international work...by choice. A desire to "experience" the world was one of my primary motivators in pursuing this career. As a new feature I will share my fascinating journeys. Hope you will enjoy the recap with me. THE POWER WITHIN YOU If change is inevitable and growth is optional, I wish someone had told me that in school before I embarked on Real Life 101. I did not go to an institute of higher learning filled with entrepreneurial studies, nor was I born with a silver spoon in my mouth nor an MBA in my briefcase. I achieved my nine successful entrepreneurial careers through something they never taught me in school - "Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off your goal." At 29, my life was marred with a great tragedy, a defining moment in my life. At the time, I was a high-school gym teacher and former professional dancer at the time. With the love and support of others, I developed two of my earliest careers and learned some valuable lessons: Build on your interest, talents, and abilities. Do what you love and success and money will follow. 1. Develop a positive attitude. "The greatest discovery in our generation is that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives." Develop an optimistic outlook on life through self-affirmations and visualization techniques. Live in the moment and stop fretting about a past you cannot change or a future in which you have no control. Look at every difficulty as an opportunity, seize the moment, and be thankful for every minute of "nowness." Happiness is an inside job. Zig Ziglar, the famous motivational speaker, said, "It's your attitude, not your aptitude, that determines your altitude." READ THE REST OF THE ARTICLE

CREATIVE CAPTIONS

I love creativity and as a wordsmith I love double entendres, alliteration, onomato... whatever the heck that one was. One of my quirky habits is collecting names of businesses that display any of the above. Here are two of my favorites:

SHOE-BE-DOO STORIES

This month's shoe from The Mikki Collection at Atelier Shoes...

Announcing The Samantha..debuting my Fall shoe collection with a tribute to "my Sam."
Most of you, if you know me, you know Sam. Some of you have never met her but you know of her - you've seen our crazy pictures together at the end of my ezine, you've spoken to her on the phone, seen her at my parties or just know that behind every successful woman is a "Sam." She is my Director of Everything and I really didn't know how apt that title was when I bestowed it upon her early on...she truly is!
And above all else, she is my friend. We have worked alongside each other for almost six years; we have challenged each other by our different communication styles but always holding the vision of what a great team we are. We've shared great joys (when she got her first book contract) and losses (as I held my lovable Brat before they put him to sleep), and we've laughed...oh how we've laughed!
I chose this shoe to be named after her because it is classy and sassy like "my Sam."

The Roma Coma
Imagine living in a world where everyone takes the entire month of August off from work, in addition to an average four weeks vacation time. That's Italy. Imagine living in a world where by law, every working person must have access to direct sunlight. That's Germany. Imagine working in a world where your career begins with two weeks vacation time and access to florescent light. That's America. I arrived in Italy this month for a brief holiday only to learn that others had the same idea. Others being the entire country. The streets of Firenze, Roma and Tuscan villages buzzed with the usual European romance that seems to dance in the air of countries that kiss the Mediterranean, only this time there was an equal mix of natives indulging in the things Italians do best - eating, drinking and whistling at Americans. As I joked with Mikki yesterday, who subtly reminded her 'mini-me' to submit this entry to Sam on time, it's hard pulling yourself out of a Roma Coma! It's that hazy, lazy, give-me-red-wine-and-cured-meat cloud that no Claritin will clear when it's time to get back to work and reality. As I sit here today digging out of a bloated inbox and fighting my fingers from taking me to Facebook and other such productivity inhibiters, I celebrate that even the Italians are back to work on September 1st! Cin-cin and ciao-ciao suckers!

A Tool For Finding People
You probably use Google many times a day. What if there was a comparable tool for finding people? Actually, there is, although most people don't think of it or use it in this way. It's called LinkedIn, a network of 125,000,000 business professionals.
Salespeople: What if you could find a boatload (a technical term meaning hundreds) of CEOs, or any other specific job title, within 50 miles of you? LinkedIn makes it possible to find and connect with these target customers. It's the Advanced People Search tool and it's free.
Login to LinkedIn and look for People Search in the upper right. Click the "Advanced" button next to that box. Then search for "people" based on any combination of the following attributes:
First and/or Last Name
Job Title
Current or Past Company (great for recruiting and for gaining competitive insights)
School
Keyword (imagine the value given that you're essentially searching people's online resumes)
Location (by country or by ZIP Code radius)
Language
Industry
LinkedIn Groups (joining a group expands your network)
Relationship (especially valuable for reaching people 1 or 2 degrees of separation from you)
And those are just the free options. Pony up for the premium service and unlock a whole lot more. LinkedIn can also show you who knows whom. Use your connections to get introduced to people. But instead of using LinkedIn introduction tools, I recommend connecting IRL; meaning In Real Life. Even in this crazy social networking age, pick up the phone and ask your connections (presumably people you actually know) to orchestrate three-way coffees or lunches with the people you want to meet. I like your chances relative to the salespeople who are still cold calling.

MIKKI'S MANTRA
|
Be outrageous...it's the only place that isn't crowded. My quote was chosen again from over 5,000 submissions to be featured in The Woman's Advantage Shared Wisdom Calendar for 2011. I'm on July 3rd (a coincidence since my birthday is July 4th) and the chosen quote was "Life gives you choices, not chances and it's those choices that determine the quality of your life." INSPIRATIONS
| We Shall Never Forget (9-11 Tribute)
Let the world always remember, That fateful day in September, And the ones who answered duties call, Should be remembered by us all. Who left the comfort of their home, To face perils as yet unknown, An embodiment of goodness on a day, When men's hearts had gone astray. Sons and daughters like me and you, Who never questioned what they had to do, Who by example, were a source of hope, And strength to others who could not cope. Heroes that would not turn their back, With determination that would not crack, Who bound together in their ranks, And asking not a word of thanks. Men who bravely gave their lives, Whose orphaned kids and widowed wives, Can proudly look back on their dad, Who gave this country all they had. Actions taken without regret, Heroisms we shall never forget, The ones who paid the ultimate price, Let's never forget their sacrifice. And never forget the ones no longer here, Who fought for the freedoms we all hold dear, And may their memory never wane, Lest their sacrifices be in vain. ---Alan W. Jankowski |
