OK, I'll admit it, I'm a mush, I LOVE Valentine's Day and I know it's a holiday most men cringe over, so here's to wishing you all lots of joy and acknowledgement in this symbolic month of love. So what else did I do besides admire, complain and cavort in the snow? I went to see a favorite show (6th time) Burn the Floor . It's an Australian dance company that is simply amazing, hard to describe, watch the video.
I returned to the architectural firm Jensen and Halstead to administer the
DISC profile seminar (l to r: Fransicso Rosas, Dave Dastur, moi, Glenn Seerup). As many of you have also experienced extreme weather I've got to tell you the blizzard in Chicago was a mind-boggling experience. High winds and lightning coupled with mammoth amounts of snow...yowsa!!! Considering I don't drive in it or have to shovel it (the benefits of living in a condo), it was just a voyeuristic experience. However I did not like all the work that got canceled including my Speakers School for the first time ever. Two brave souls made it in from NH and WI and we made that a coaching

opportunity. I was delighted that the weather allowed me to keynote a kick-off meeting at Dewpoint, a leading technology consulting company in Detroit, as they launched a new initiative.
(l to r: Andy Kotarba, CEO and President of Dewpoint, moi, Claire Middleton)
I am so blessed, not only by the people I meet and the work I love but also by the extraordinary places I get to stay. I enjoyed my time with Alan Sorkin (below)
and his group at the
Balboa Bay Club & Resort
in Newport Beach. Had lunch with friends, Patty Vogan and LaVerne Friedman (photos next month) on the water, admiring the fabulous yachts. Felt like I was back in St. Tropez. Happy Valentine's, all...

I LOVE THIS BOOK! |
The New Retirementality Planning Your Life and Living Your Dreams...at Any Age You Want
What "retire" meant to previous generations as they looked toward pensions and peace of mind...well, today we face a much different reality. Most of us won't experience the same retirements that our parents did, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. In this book, you'll discover how to achieve the freedom to pursue your own retirement goals, at your own pace, on your own terms regardless of your age. The author reveals how new opportunities will enable you to create a tailor-made life that is both fulfilling and flexible. His concepts of "wealth care" and "return on life" are worth the read itself and it is a terrific guide for anyone at any age to look at their journey with a new "retirementality." I found this book so inspiring and life affirming. Go get it!! |

BIZ BYTES |
My first three years of professional speaking was mostly international work...by choice. A desire to "experience" the world was one of my primary motivators in pursuing this career. As a new feature I will share my fascinating journeys. Hope you will enjoy the recap with me. Frulein Williams Speaking in Germany
Danke Schon fur die einladung. Ich bin sehr troh um hier zu sein. (Thank you for the invitation. I am very happy to be here.) That was the opening line in my keynote address in Germany. It immediately shows the audience you care by using their language and respecting their customs. "This is Herr Horn from Germany." "I would like to have you present at my annual conference, however, I heard you use humor and that would not be appropriate." He said, "Germans are very serious, don't have much of a sense of humor, prefer facts and details and besides humor doesn't translate well." Phew! I knew when I set my goals to speak internationally there would be challenges. This was a classic example of an opportunity disguised as a problem. Read the rest of the article.

CREATIVE CAPTIONS | I love creativity and as a wordsmith I love double entendres, alliteration, onomato... whatever the heck that one was. One of my quirky habits is collecting names of businesses that display any of the above. Here are two of my favorites:

SHOE-BE-DOO STORIES | Yes, I own about a billion pairs of shoes. And each pair has a story to inspire, a lesson to be learned, a laugh or an "aha!"

Two of my new year intentions (not resolutions) are to attend at least one new networking opportunity per quarter (hey, I speak on the subject ) and one new learning opportunity (I'm registered for two upcoming ones, stay tuned). Soooo....my Vistage member Kelly Wisecarver had consistently invited me to a meeting of GNMAA - Greater North Michigan Avenue Association but my travel schedule always prevented my attendance. Finally this past month I was able to attend their annual business meeting as well as the social and networking reception afterward with food from some of the area's greatest restaurants - what a perk of membership! Two of my other Vistage members, Chris Long and Jill Kirschenbaum are also members and were in attendance as well. It was a diverse and interesting crowd. And yes, those are rhinestones on those shoes! |

Snowgasm February is a tough month, especially if you live in a cold and volatile city like Chicago. It's a time when new year's resolutions fade to life's everyday routine; a time when that marketing ploy called 'Valentine's Day' has some of us thinking along the lines of Black Eyed Peas song, Where is the Love? For us Midwesterners February is a time when the holiday lights fade to a dismal gray of dirty snow and cloudy skies. The days are short, nights long, and the most we have to look forward to is a freak snowstorm that may just get us out of work for a day, and one day closer to an early spring. Or so we hope. Wednesday, some of us got our wish - a snow day. I, on the other hand, got a good flick in the forehead by the Universe for grumbling about having to work from home. While many of my friends were enjoying their day off I was settling into just another boring day at the home office. Sitting in sweatpants, the 'favorite kind' with a saggy butt and missing drawstring, I began the morning by setting work aside so that I could cast my vote on Facebook for the snazziest snow lingo. Snowpocalypse, snowmaggedon, blizzaster, snOw-M-G, and my personal favorite, snowgasm. It was during this time that I looked outside to see Donald Trump's next wingman - a homeless man with a shovel and small pail of salt. The ultimate entrepreneur. I watched as this man, in his tattered un-insulated duds, approached the unlucky few who still had to go to work to offer what little he had, time and a shovel. All morning this man shoveled snow, salted the ground, rocked cars back-and-forth, offered a friendly wave to the person driving off, and then headed to the next snowbound victim. His hand was extended, palm up, only to help drivers step over the snow banks pressed against their car doors. Not once did I see him ask for money. By morning's end I was sure the man had enough money for a meal and shelter, and enough heart to heat the coldest of days. Maybe February isn't so bad after all. Kristen_darosa@hotmail.com

HE WHO LAUGHS...LASTS! |
Jim asked his friend, Tony, whether he had bought his wife anything for Valentine's Day.
"Yes," came the answer from Tony who was a bit of a chauvinist. "I've bought her a belt and a bag."
"That was very kind of you," Jim said. "I hope she appreciated the thought."
"So do I," Tony said, "and hopefully the vacuum cleaner will work better now."

SOCIAL MEDIA GURU GUY | Dave Nelsen Entrepreneur and Social Media Guide Dave's formal title is President, Dialog Consulting Group From 2005 to 2009 he was CEO of TalkShoe, a social media company now serving more than one million monthly listeners...and the fabulous company I use to produce my monthly teleseminars.
ESP Using Social Media
You've heard of Twitter. Almost 100 million times a day, people share whatever's on their mind, in 140 characters or less, using their mobile phones. In total, it's random noise. But what if you could listen for information relevant to your business, maybe just in your geographic area. Well, you can at www.search.twitter.com!
Let's say you run a car dealership in Mars (PA, that is). Let's find out who wants a new car right now!
In the Twitter search box, type: "new car" (in quotes to search for the entire phrase). And since you serve a limited geographic area, add "near:16046" (without quotes). To be more specific, add "within: 25mi" (without quotes) because people will drive only so far for a good deal. Yes, the Internet and cell phones know precisely where we are; scary but true.
1.93 seconds later, you'll see local folks with new cars on their minds:
"MY NEW CAR IS GONNA BE A 2011 CAR"
"Scramble and find a new car - my inspection is up and costs way too much to fix. 188k!"
"I wanna New Car!!!"
"It's time for a new car!"
For each of these Tweeters you might begin a conversation by offering a "secret discount code" or helpful advice such as: "I'm a car dealer. You always get a better deal when you..." Place the @ sign in front of their username and they'll likely see your response.
One other thing: Once you've created a search query that works, you never have to do it again. Just click the button that says "Feed for this query" and you'll receive automatic notifications as new matches occur. How cool is that?

THE HAPPY COOKER |
Yes, that was the name of one of my businesses and oh, come on, I know guys cook too.
Especially for Valentine's Month - Lavender has a storied past: The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used the aromatic herb not only medicinally but for cosmetic and beauty purposes. In ancient Rome, women kept sprays of lavender next to their beds as a way to arouse their mate's senses.
Honey Lavender Ice Cream
Yield: Makes about 1 qt
Active time: 20 min Start to finish: 8 hr (includes steeping, chilling, and freezing)
2 cups heavy cream
1 cup half-and-half
2/3 cup mild honey
2 tablespoons dried edible lavender flowers*
2 large eggs
1/8 teaspoon salt
Special equipment: a candy or instant-read thermometer; an ice cream maker
Bring cream, half-and-half, honey, and lavender just to a boil in a 2-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, then remove pan from heat. Let steep, covered, 30 minutes.
Pour cream mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl and discard lavender. Return mixture to cleaned saucepan and heat over moderate heat until hot.
Whisk together eggs and salt in a large bowl, then add 1 cup hot cream mixture in a slow stream, whisking. Pour into remaining hot cream mixture in saucepan and cook over moderately low heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until thick enough to coat back of spoon and registers 170 to 175F on thermometer, about 5 minutes (do not let boil).
Pour custard through sieve into cleaned bowl and cool completely, stirring occasionally. Chill, covered, until cold, at least 3 hours.
Freeze custard in ice cream maker. Transfer ice cream to an airtight container and put in freezer to harden.
Cooks' notes:
To cool custard quickly after straining, set bowl in a larger bowl of ice and cold water and stir until chilled. Custard can chill up to 1 day before freezing. Ice cream keeps 1 week.

INSPIRATIONS | As the wordsmith that I have always been, from my high school honors in English (and French) to my calling as a professional speaker, each of the "inspirations" that I share every month are from years and years of collecting words that have inspired me.
This is my all time favorite love poem - so appropriate for this month.
How Do I Love Thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being an ideal Grace. I love thee to the level of everyday's Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight. I love thee freely, as men strive for Right; I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints,--I love thee with the Breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life!--and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death. ---Elizabeth Barret Browning

I took Mikki's speaking school for the first time and landed my first professional speaking gig shortly after. A year later I was asked to speak at my industry convention. Within two years I was speaking as the keynote. I have to fill the shoes of Michael Gerber, Author of The Best Selling E-Myth, so I thought I'd take the refresher course to prepare. Mikki is truly an inspiration. Her class has propelled me from a shy, nervous public speaker to an industry keynoter in a couple years. Thanks Mikki!
