MUSINGS FROM MIKKI
New Year                          Mikki 1/11

New Year's Revolutions!

I took three weeks off to end 2010 and spent one in Chicago, one at my Florida home and just got back from vacation in Ziehautenjo, Mexico - ready to rock a new year! I had an incredible experience of releasing baby sea turtles back into the Pacific in Mexico. The mother gives birth once a year to hundreds and we arrived on thatTurtles day, heard the fascinating story of the sea turtle and each got one turtle for the release. It was the size of a quarter in the palm of my  hand. Can you see it in the photo at right?

We ate at some magnificent restaurants, including one of my favorites, Espuma (below).

Espuma Restaurant

I enjoyed being a guest on VoiceAmerica, hosted by my Vistage member Brian Beaulieu, fellow speaker, friend and world-class economist (with a personality). He and his twin brother Alan interviewed me on branding.

I added my networking seminar to my Vistage repertoire, "Your Network is Important to Your Net Worth," by special request of illustrious Chair, Ralph Aufheimer.

The holidays were filled with parties, family

Jason&Mik 1-2011

and jury duty, how's that for a digression? Jason (right), commonly referred to as THE son, got stuck here due to the snowstorm in New York where he lives and we got to spend an extra day together.

My Vistage groups had our holiday meetings with spouses/guests and a guest speaker on health, Dr. David Leonardi (always a good way to start a new year).

My Key group partied after our meeting at Maya del Sol. Pictured with me below is Karen DrinkardKaren & Mik 1-2011, CFO of Gregg Communications who was voted by her peers as Member of the Year. Similarly, my CEO group had our holiday event at Wildfire and pictured with me below is Sandy Marsico, CEO of Sandstorm Design and Dave Dastur, Principal of Jensen and Halstead . Sandy-Dave-Mik 1-11Sandy was named Member of the Year and they both earned perfect attendance awards.

I'm thrilled to introduce two new exciting columnists for my ezine (scroll down to see their columns): Kristan DaRosa, the most insightful millennial I've ever met who will share with you in her unique wit, how to understand and get along with this generation whether you gave birth to them or work with them; the "entitled generation" as they have been called, much to their chagrin.

And John Godoy, fascinating wellness and lifestyle expert. He's my personal trainer and THE best I have ever seen (and I was in the fitness business). He will share his monthly sage advice as to how to live your best life (excuse me, Oprah).

I wish you all an "intentional" New Year!

Hair's to you in 2011 (couldn't resist!)

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
Book-Jan.11The 4-Hour Body
AN UNCOMMON GUIDE TO RAPID FAT LOSS, INCREDIBLE SEX AND BECOMING SUPERHUMAN
by Timothy Ferriss

OK, what can I say, I'm a fan. When he first wrote The 4-Hour Work Week, he had me at hello. The guy's a maverick so it should be obvious for those of you who know me. His ideas are radical, revolutionary, outside the box and I just love how he challenges convention (no surprise there). This book is the result of an obsessive quest spanning more than a decade. From elite athletes to dozens of MDs plus years of personal experimentation, Tim was searching for the answer to this question: "For all things physical, what are the tiniest changes that produce the biggest results?" This book answers that question. It's a great book to begin the new year.

BIZ BYTES
                Chronicles
My first three years of professional speaking was mostly international work...by choice. A desire to "experience" the world was one of my primary motivators in pursuing this career. Last month I shared my African Queen article and as a new feature will continue to share my other fascinating journeys. Hope you will enjoy the recap with me.

Singapore Swing 1994...I think (yes I was living in Westport, CT and yes, cell phones were just coming in).

It's a city, it's a state, it's an island! No, it's Singapore. After a record breaking 18 snowstorms where I live in New England I was delighted to be invited to return to this tropical paradise. However, their humidity gave new meaning to my already "big hair."

Singaporeans are delightful. They love to make money and enjoy life. Not a bad philosophy. Their society is characterized by a diversified population of Singaporeans, Chinese, Malays and Indians. The lush landscape is contradicted by the modern high rise apartments that are the main living accommodations. It's very costly to own a car so it's not unusual to see Singaporeans walking on the street talking on their cellular phone (as opposed to Australians where everyone drives and is always on their car phone).

CREATIVE CAPTIONS
I love creativity and as a wordsmith I love double entendres, alliteration, onomato... whatever the heck that one was. One of my quirky habits is collecting names of businesses that display any of the above. Here are two of my favorites:

ESTATE OF GRACE (antique store) - courtesay of Ken Alan. Thanks, Ken, keep 'em coming!
L.A. HAIRPORT (beauty salon near LAX)

SHOE-BE-DOO STORIES
Yes, I own about a billion pairs of shoes. And each pair has a story to inspire, a lesson to be learned, a laugh or an "aha!"

No, these are not the shoes that go with this story but these are my newest

Shoes Jan2011

shoes and one of my oldest stories.  Okay, okay, I'm taking artistic liberty here. I'm in Mexico on vacation sharing stories with my travel companion.  When we finished the turtle experience, it triggered my duck story. At the famous Peabody Hotel in Memphis, renowned for the Peabody ducks, I was honored to be one of their honorary duckmasters (got the T shirt) and I believe my photo hangs in the Wall of Fame. I went to the penthouse where the ducks live, brought them down in the elevator, then using a gentle stick, directed them onto the red carpet that led from the elevator to the fountain where they spend their days, and at night the whole procedure reverses itself. People come from all over at the two designated times to watch the ducks enter and leave the fountains. Just another experience for the experience junkie...me  (I know what you're thinking)

And no, these shoes would not be duck-herding shoes.

MILLENIAL INSIGHTS
Kristen DaRosaKristen DaRosa is an adventure-seeking young consultant specializing in relationship management and marketing. Her Chicago-based consultancy is dedicated to helping her nationally-based clients do just about anything related to the art of 'talk'. DaRosa is an ambassador for a premier MBA school where she facilitates relationship management with global corporations. She will be sharing with us her perspective on what many call "the entitled generation."

'Shake your tail feathers' - A form of new-age dance. To stick out your rear and shake it side to side, typically to a hip-hop song. Usage: "OMG, I love this song! Mikki, go shake your tail feathers!"

The $100K Bird

My parents spent a near fortune sending me to an out-of-state university for a business degree from a highly-ranked institution. After changing majors five times I emerged with a degree in journalism. I don't know about you, but I retained a limited vat of collegiate knowledge, most of it 'worthless' in the most literal sense. But I do recall learning about an African deity known as the 'Sankofa Bird' that's brought clarity to my life.

The Sankofa Bird stands tall on its two legs, head turned back toward its tail feathers. The meaning? One must look to their past before flying forward.

As I look ahead to a new year, marked by just another day, I look back with gratitude for 2010's invaluable lessons and blessings. I'm thankful for surviving 16 weddings and still having shoes on my feet. (Thank you, Mikki, for your kind contribution of killer heels. They hurt like hell, but damn I look good!) Thankful for a family who, despite our gumbo nature of halves, steps and half-steps, show only love and support. (Respect can be questionable during heated board games.) Thankful for friends who applaud my efforts to be weird by wearing ripped leggings and colorful hair extensions. And most of all, thankful that I'm 28 and at a place in my career where I'm neither an overpaid executive or underpaid bottom-feeder, fearful of walking the unemployment plank.

As we fly into this new year, arms stretched wide and open to new experiences, I hope you take a moment to look back and prepare yourself to fly forward shakin' those tail feathers. Tweet-tweet!

TITILLATING TRIVIA
In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase, "Goodnight, sleep tight."

Feel vitalized in 2011: 3 Tips to Feel and Look Great This Year

Each year I have to weigh giving realistic fitness advice to my clients versus telling them what the latest science says. Through my years of experience and a lot of street education - I can tell you this - the closer I go to realistic - the greater the adherence and success. Therefore keeping with this notion and the K.I.S.S. principle - here are 3 things that will help improve your health and bring you greater amounts of energy in 2011.

1. Drink water....lots of it! Most of us walk around in a state of dehydration. By simply making a conscious effort to drink copious amounts of water - you hydrate yourself adequately and allow the body to function and feel better. As a rule of thumb aim to drink half your weight of water in ounces daily.

2. Skip Dinner and eat a hearty breakfast.  For most busy Americans, by the time dinner arrives we have already consumed our daily calorie requirements...and then some. Skipping dinner is simply putting the cap on the gas tank. Do this for a week - and you will begin waking up hungry which will encourage you to eat the most important meal of the day...breakfast.

3. Strive to move as much as you don't move. Most of our day is spent lying down or sitting, in other words not moving. Plan to be active every day. This does not mean just go to the gym or work out every day but  simply incorporate as much movement/activity as you can on a daily basis.

An Idea Exchange

One hundred years ago most business people knew their customers' names, needs, likes and dislikes. Since then we scaled up in the name of productivity and volume but lost that customer intimacy. We mastered the art of the monologue (think websites, product brochures, press releases, advertisements, and email blasts).

Social networking tools allow us to create many-to-many conversations that reconnect us as individuals. One of my favorite such tools is an "idea exchange."

At www.MyStarbucksIdea.com you can make a suggestion, vote on the ideas of others, and see a list of Starbucks' changes resulting directly from customers' suggestions. Recently I received an email from Starbucks saying "Dave, here are the first 50 changes we've made based on your ideas!" (Note: Only 37 of the ideas were mine, personally; 20 million other fans contributed too).

Countless organizations are facilitating similar dialogs. Dell is learning with its customers at www.IdeaStorm.com. Vancouver government officials are garnering the best ideas from citizens at www.Vancouver.UserVoice.com. What a fabulous development: politicians actually listening to and acting on the collective wisdom of their constituents!

You can run your own idea exchange for roughly $100/month with a service from either www.SalesForce.com or www.UserVoice.com. Together these folks power idea exchanges for more than 50,000 organizations, including all of the examples I've cited here. What are you waiting for?

  INSPIRATIONS
As the wordsmith that I have always been, from my high school honors in English (and French) to my calling as a professional speaker, each of the "inspirations" that I share every month are from years and years of collecting words that have inspired me.

Ode To The New Year

'Twas the month after Christmas and all through the house
Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.

The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste
At the holiday parties had gone to my waist.

When I got on the scales there arose such a number!
When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber).

I took Mikki's speaking school for the first time and landed my first professional speaking gig shortly after. A year later I was asked to speak at my industry convention. Within two years I was speaking as the keynote.  I have to fill the shoes of Michael Gerber, Author of The Best Selling E-Myth, so I thought I'd take the refresher course to prepare. Mikki is truly an inspiration. Her class has propelled me from a shy, nervous public speaker to an industry keynoter in a couple years.
Thanks Mikki!
