This is my busy, busy season so I'm off and running from my two homes in Chicago and Naples, Florida to Las Vegas, Pittsburgh, Austin, Grand Geneva, Wisconsin, Santa Monica, Paso Robles (that's also California), Lisle, Illinois (hey, anything outside the city is a major trip for me!). I started the month in Vegas with a return engagement to the Dance Teacher Web conference now run by my former dance student Steve Sirico and his wife Angie and premier event planner Dawn. It was held at the gorgeous Red Rock Casino and Resort, and besides the work, I made lots of time to play. C'mon, it's Vegas, home of "bling!"). See me with my new friends: Elvis and my stint in showgirl-ness. Okay, okay...not tall enough, lol.
And speaking of friends, pictured here with my BFF, Sherry Davis who was there doing a training for her company Healthy Steps .
For those of you who know I USED to collect lips or have visited my website with remnants of them, one of the guys couldn't resist taking a picture of the urinals!
My life is one contrasting experience after another. And that's what makes it so fun! I participated in the All-City event for Vistage for all Chairs (like moi) and members throughout the region who came together for a one day conference organized by dear friend, peer and all around great dude, Bill Durmer , where yours truly facilitated a Meet the Pros session. Finished the month with an invitation from EO member Julie Northcutt (who has heard me speak for her organization) to be her guest at a sold out event, front row center seat to hear the guest speaker, Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos. I was thrilled! I had already read and loved his book (watch for it next month in my book review), Delivering Happiness; The Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose. The day before the event Julie called and asked me to be his "opening act." Again, thrilled to be a part of it all. He and his team are on a countrywide bus tour "delivering" the message, and I was invited to a private party that night at The Underground, famous Chicago night spot. I grabbed some friends and off we went. Pictured (left) the party girl me, BFF Michele Goldsmith, Sandy Rueve, former Vistage member, dear friend and fabulous biz, SheBeads AND my interior designer extraordinaire, Jim Malone, fresh from putting the finishing touches on my Florida digs. H ere's a glimpse into my new dressing room (Okay, no surprise regarding the jewelry wall!)
And...I am honored to be the "cover girl" of Authentic Woman magazine. Read more...
Save the date to hear me speak in Chicago! October 20th at 6:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
|
DRIVE The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Daniel H. Pink
I LOVED Daniel Pink's first book, A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers Will Rule the World so it was a no-brainer (lol) to run out and get this book. As a "motivational junkie," I am fascinated by the research in this field. Most of us believe that the best way to motivate ourselves and others is with external rewards, like money. He believes that's a mistake (as I do). The secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things and to do better by ourselves and our world. He explains, "The mismatch between what science knows and what business does." The part that resonated most with me was his exploration into the three elements of true motivation - autonomy, mastery and purpose and he offers insightful techniques for putting them into action. If you've ever heard me expound upon my own theories of inspiration vs. motivation, then I would ask you if you are now inspired (a change in thinking) to go out and get this book (motivation, a call to action?). DRIVE (sorry, couldn't resist), walk, run to your nearest book purveyor!)
AND, speaking of books, if
you're in the Chicago area you're invited to my Sam's book launch/signing party for her new novel,Mr. Right-Enough. When: October 7, 2010 at
6:30 p.m. Where: Flourish Studios, 3020 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago Hope to see you there! Will be lots of fun - wine, cheese, reading, conversation...and I'll be doing the introduction...of course! It's a free event, just SIGN UP so we know how many to plan for: REGISTER HERE or send Sam an email: samanthahoffman@aol.com

In professional speaking terms this is my signature speech.
It started as one speech 25 years ago called Pyromania: How to Set a Fire Under
Yourself™. Over the years it evolved into three speeches as a result of client
needs and expectations. Why a trilogy? I'm proud and happy to share that the
initial speech was so popular that more of the same was requested and thus
designed. They are speeches that have been given to every age, every
demographic and on every continent (except Antarctica...even I can't inspire
penguins☺). It's really evolved one more time, just
haven't changed the title. Initially it was pure motivation, then it segued to
work/life balance but in my work into the field of human potential it has
emerged once more and now addresses quality of life issue aka life skills. Although they may sound like things you
hear and know on a daily basis, there are so many variations and formulas to
success that can be continually explored. The program covers attitude, risk-taking, goal-setting,
continuous learning, self-esteem, the power of hope, values and more. I believe the quality of our lives is
contingent upon two factors... our values and our choices. First determine your values, then make
your choices sync with those values. One of the interactive exercises
includes these four questions; Does your company have core values? What are your own personal values? Have you discussed
relationship values? How have you
instilled family values? I give my attendees homework along with insights on
working through these. This is a good starter for all of you in answering these
questions.

CREATIVE CAPTIONS
|
I love creativity and as a wordsmith I love double entendres,
alliteration, onomato... whatever the heck that one was. One of my quirky
habits is collecting names of businesses that display any of the above. Here
are two of my favorites:
Toktumi (a phone store) From Russia With Dove (a bird store)

SHOE-BE-DOO STORIES
|
Yes, I own about a billion pairs of shoes. And each pair has a story to inspire, a lesson to be learned, a laugh or an "aha!"
Some shoes hold nostaglia, some hold memories, some hold
painful reminders, some just are works of art to be admired, some reflect our
proudest moments. I have always been a goal-setter, an overachiever; if I'm
going to do something why not do it to the max? Guess it fits in with my love
of "excess." Every career
I had, I strove to win the top award, the prize, the honor - it's my
competitive nature and the aspect of who I am that continually pushes the
envelope of bettering myself. It
was no different when I entered the speaking profession. I aspired to be a CSP,
a certified speaking professional, less than 300 in the world at that time in
the mid 90s, and an earned designation. I wore these shoes on the stage of the National Speakers Convention when
I, along with 21 others, achieved our goal in an award ceremony reminiscent of
the Olympics as they place the ribbon and medal over your head...and with my
hair that was a giggle for all.

SOCIAL MEDIA GURU GUY
|
Dave Nelsen Entrepreneur and Social Media Guide Dave's formal title is President, Dialog Consulting Group From
2005 to 2009 he was CEO of TalkShoe, a social media company now serving
more than one million monthly listeners...and the fabulous company I
use to produce my monthly teleseminars.
The biggest benefit of social media comes not from
participating, at least not as a content producer. No, the biggest benefit is
in the accelerated learning that comes from reading, watching and listening to
social media. There's only one universal sustainable competitive advantage
in business (and in life): learning faster, and adapting to change more
quickly. In an environment of too much information, you must narrow
your focus to only the relevant. Google helps you do that. Go to
www.Google.com/Alerts and enter a term or a phrase relevant to your business.
Google will watch "everything" and notify you as it appears. By everything, Google means websites, press releases, books,
BLOGS, TWITTER, YOUTUBE, and more. Unbelievable! Need ideas for what to tune into? How about your company
name, product names, key employee names, customers and prospects, competitors,
industry terms? In a world of mouth, that's informational advantage.

FUN, FABULOUS, FEARLESS FRIENDS
|
If any of you remember the movie or Broadway show
"Auntie Mame" or if you're old enough to admit you remember it, then
you might recall that Mame was famous for her eclectic circle of friends. I
pride myself on that same principle of knowing so many diverse people and
calling many of them my friends. Introducing...this month's teleseminar guest and my dear friend, AmyK Hutchens. AmyK Hutchens is the brain-brilliant woman offering up a unique perspective on life, leadership, neuro-sales and innovation. As CEO and Intelligence Activist of AmyK, Inc., AmyK travels the world serving as a catalyst to help companies and individuals grow profitably. A quick-witted provocateur, AmyK stimulates new ideas and connections for your personal and professional profit. So where does AmyK get this so-called expertise? Well, for the last eighteen years she's been up to a few things... Senior Executive Vice President, Operations for one of the largest sales and marketing firms in the U.S. Director of Education for Europe and Australasia for a 900 million dollar consumer products company. Executive Coach, Keynote Speaker & Consultant. Chosen Member of National Geographic's Educator Advisory Committee. Mentor for Georgia State University's International Alliance MBA Program. INSPIRATIONS
|
As the wordsmith
that I have always been, from my high school honors in English (and
French) to my calling as a professional speaker, each of the
"inspirations" that I share every month are from years and years of
collecting words that have inspired me. Apple Island W h e r edo teachers come from?Who has the slightest notion?Teachers lived on Apple Island,In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. All the kind teachers set sail for America,And that is where they built the first schools. But the crabby teachers remained on the island,And from his Office Palace, Prince Apple still rules. You might spy teachers hiking on the Great Hall Way.Some might be in the bushes picking off thumbtacks. Many will be on the Grand Playground hard at play,Or down in the mines, drilling colorful crayon wax. Some wade in Purple Lake to fill buckets with ink,And some will be picking paper leaves off trees.Others are filling milk cartons that you'll drink,At either white or chocolate half-pint dairies. Now you know the truth about teachers,They are different from you or me.They come from a distant land,In the middle of the sea.Apple Island. From Douglas Evans' Children's book
