MUSINGS FROM MIKKI
Thanks for voting for me for Oprah's Talk Show Host contest! It's a verrrrrrrry long shot as they are only choosing 35 initially from 15,000 entrants, then whittling down to ten for the reality show to find THE one! As always, no matter the outcome I have a new speech story about going after your dreams and how surprising and rewarding the journey was. Thanks for all your love, support and efforts, and apologies to all those with click-itis. Smiley Face

I love July! Of course, I do, it's my birthday month, so I get to celebrate all month long. Makes sense to me! Every five years I do something spectacular, a black tie affair at the W Hotel, followed by five years later, a week on the French Riviera with 12 gal pals and now in the "how do I top that?" for the next five. In between years, I have a party at a hotel (downside of a holiday birthday is most places are closed). The Sofitel Hotel was the absolute perfect choice. Ten women friends gathered on the patio for drinks then crossed over to the outdoor dining area for dinner and lots of networking and chatter. It was a gorgeous summer night with a bevy of beauties (I love how that sounds). And the best part, reminiscent of my time in France, our French waiter Romi (left) sang Happy Birthday to me in French and then La Vie En Romi-b'dayRose.
I have fabulous female friends...gorgeous, smart, savvy women from L to R bottom, Lynn LaPalermo, Babor Cosmetics, Melissa Birthday gangReiff, Raconteur, Julia Rahn, Flourish Studio, Kendra Lockhart, Jewelry Designer, Bonnie Kaplan, ShopParty (not pictured). Top row L to R: Michele Goldsmith, Global Sales Director for Master Volt (Yachts) AND newly minted entrepreneur for her company, Belle Cose, Moi, birthday gal, Marjorie Herter, VeeSee Construction, Sandy Rueve, SheBeads and My Sam, Director of Everything AND author.

Had an awesome time at one of my favorite clients, Universal Weather and Aviation in Houston doing a two day training for their sales force using part DiSC profiling, part Speakers School, part sales techniques. Pictured below with Kevin Tipton, Vice President, Worldwide Marketing & Communications and Tom Mahoney, Vice President of Global Sales, and the gorgeous flowers they sent me for my birthday. Universal WeatherFlowers

And on the celebrity front, my good buddy Rick Dorfman  (blue shirt) came to town to see his client J.B. Smoove from Curb Your Enthusiasm, (far left - his wife's on the right) J.B. Smooveperform at the Chicago Theatre with Cedric the Entertainer, so we hung out backstage with them.  If that's not enough (whew!). I find out Jack O'Pierce is playing in town and Cary Pierce, the lead singer was my dance student over 20 years ago and I have not seen him since. What a surprise!

Tune in to listen to me being interviewed by Bruce Peters on The CEO Hour from 12:30-1:00 EST on Friday July 23rd. To hear the show live, go to www.wsradio.com. or if you miss it, you can find it in the archives of www.wceohq-radio.org.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
Mr. Right-Enough Mr. Right-Enough
Samantha Hoffman (Yes! MY Sam!Smiley Face)

I love this book because "my Sam" wrote it and I'm so proud of her and now all of you get to witness her talents beyond the confines of my office. When Sam isn't being my wonderful Director of Everything she is a  runner, a reader, a film buff, a tech geek, a blogging queen, a personal assistant, a chef, a wine enthusiast, a CASA volunteer, an animal lover, a sister, a friend, a lover of life...and, oh yes...a writer. Whew!
I really did love this book because it's a great story that many of us can relate to about a successful woman on the verge of marriage who through a website connects with her high school boyfriend. The plot that ensues takes you through a personal journey that we all have at mid-life as we question our choices, reflect on our past, envision our future and, try as we may, to apply all our lessons learned. It's worth reading, if just to find out why the house is on the cover and how the title came to be.

Stay tuned for news about our book signing party at Flourish Studios in the fall.

And...I don't usually do this but since it's MY Sam, I urge you to buy this book. And then after you read it (and love it!), tell all your friends! Tell people you know who are in book clubs and let them know that she offers a volume discount for members and is available to attend book club meetings for the discussion. Send her an email for more information.
 Happy Reading!

Irresistible Ways To Attract Customers
July 28th 12:00PM CDT

Value-Added Selling is built on the premise that we can differentiate our products and services to the point that customers will pay us whatever we are asking. Too many customers buy on price. The reason is usually that the salesperson was selling on price. Stop doing that; sell on value.

The current economy has customers raising the price objection more often and has competitors discounting more often. We will talk about how to find the right person and how to get them to listen to you. Join in the conversation and hear the many profound Chuck-isms, i.e. "In the history of recorded time no customer has ever said, 'Your price is too high,' and meant it."

August's guest will be Michael Allosso from Boston, director/actor turned corporate leadership/communication coach, conversing with Mikki on "You on Your Best Day."
YOU ON YOUR BEST DAY is a program that puts people through the same kind of training professional actors have in order to maximize their performance every day.

Customer Service or Lip Service
I get to do a lot of client appreciation programs for companies. I just completed two days of sales training for one of my favorite clients in Houston, Universal Weather and Aviation.  I trained the sales force in the use of the DiSC profile to recognize and sell to the behavioral style of their customers.  Then we worked on techniques from my Speakers School to give them the tools for the best presentations, one-on-one or to a group. We spent a day on video coaching and it turned out to be a great two day investment in their people. They all sent me THE most beautiful bouquet for my July 4th birthday with a card that read, "Thank you for an amazing experience." Indy500

I digress...This company can be the "poster child" for great customer service as they invest in their people to be better at what they do to give their customers a great experience. When is the first or last time you did something like that for your good customers?

In my customer service program I use a lot of examples and stories (you all know, I'm a story teller) to illustrate examples of good and bad service, to inspire leaders to manage "moments of truth."

CREATIVE CAPTIONS
I love creativity and as a wordsmith I love double entendres, alliteration, onomato... whatever the heck that one was. One of my quirky habits is collecting names of businesses that display any of the above. Here are two of my favorites:

SHOE-BE-DOO STORIES
Shoes-July10Yes, I own about a billion pairs of shoes. And each pair has a story to inspire, a lesson to be learned, a laugh or an "aha!"

Some experiences are good and some are not so good and my Shoe-Be-Doo stories run the gamut. I had these shoes on one day when I accomplanied my girlfriend Michele Goldsmith to pick up something at J. Crew (lest you all think that's where I shop...not enought bling - had to put that in for clarification!).
As we entered the store my heel got caught in a frayed edge of sisal carpeting and I went flying, taking the mannequin with me.  I lay on top of the mannequin, looking rather obscene, and of course the noise made everyone (and I mean EVERYONE - it was Saturday at the mall...need I say more?) in
B'day cardthe store stop to look. I had a cut knee, a very sore hip and a very bruised ego. But hey, I'm all about experiences!Smiley Face

MIKKI MOUTH:
QUOTATIONS I WISH I'D SAID AND SOME I DID SAY!
Mikki Mouth Enjoy a quote each month from my new book - some funny, some poignant, some professional, some just darn cute!

I was invited to Zanie's comedy club Zanies
to watch Dobie Maxwell teach a comedy class.  I had never met Dobie but he gets my ezine and is a huge fan so he contacted me and that led to my invitation. For those of you out-of-towners, Zanies is a famous club with photos of the many comics from Seinfeld to Leno who have appeared there.
Anyway, pardon the LONG story just to set the stage to share a SHORT funny quote that's so appropriate for my birthday month. This is from the other teacher, Bill Gorgo:

"You know you're getting old when you'd rather have a back massage than a front one."

READER REVIEWS
I must say, you have THE most detailed newsletter I've ever seen. WOW! Nice work.

SOCIAL MEDIA GURU GUY
Dave Nelsen
And introducing our new columnist "MY guru,"
Dave Nelsen
Entrepreneur and Social Media Guide (he says, "Anyone claiming to be an "expert" might be a shyster." I say "Never call yourself an expert; an ex is a has-been and a spurt is little more than a drip.")  So Dave is MY guru - according to Webster, "an influential teacher."

Formal Title: President, Dialog Consulting Group

Three things you should know about Dave:

1)   He's a long time CEO who's started four companies in the last 15 years, raising $70 million in venture capital along the way.

2)   He's been recognized as Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, as Tech Council CEO of the Year and as Vistage Best New Speaker of the Year.

3)   From 2005 to 2009 he was CEO of TalkShoe, a social media company now serving more than 1 million monthly listeners.

FUN, FABULOUS, FEARLESS FRIENDS
If any of you remember the movie or Broadway show "Auntie Mame" or if you're old enough to admit you remember it, then you might recall that Mame was famous for her eclectic circle of friends. I pride myself on that same principle of knowing so many diverse people and calling many of them my friends.

Introducing...this month's teleseminar guest and my dear friend,
Chuck Reaves.Chuck Reaves

Chuck and I have known each other @#$%^&* years. We met through NSA, our trade association (National Speakers Association) and have remained mutual fans and friends for a long time. Aside from the other language he speaks (that would be Southern) Chuck is an amazing speaker, entrepreneur and all around classy dude. But enough gushing, he is a prolific presenter (notice how I slipped in my favorite alliteration), averaging 100 presentations a year and a member of the Speaker Hall of Fame. He has consulted with numerous companies, including Fortune 500 to develop marketing plans, incentive/compensation plans and sales training; he's a former professional pallbearer,  and he drove a 1951 Henry J with body damage on all four sides, painted white with a brush, homemade seat covers and, as a result, went dateless through most of high school!

MIKKI'S MANTRA
Be outrageous...it's the only place that isn't crowded.

  INSPIRATIONS
As the wordsmith that I have always been, from my high school honors in English (and French) to my calling as a professional speaker, each of the "inspirations" that I share every month are from years and years of collecting words that have inspired me.
Yankee Doodle is one of the most popular American patriotic songs, and is also the state song of Connecticut. AND...I was born on the fourth of July. I grew up next to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx (a diehard Yankee fan to this day, shhhh Cubbies, too)  and I lived in Connecticut, so I'm a true Yankee and often thought of as a Doodle too, lol.

However, despite its popularity, it started out as a song that made fun of American troops.
