Shoe Per Bowl Party...! That's what the evite read.
I love to entertain! I love my gal pals! I LOVE
shoes! Whenever there's an opportunity to combine those I am a happy camper. Soooooo, while
you were pumping the keg to get ready for Super Bowl I had my friends over for
a Shoe Per Bowl Party...a brunch on Super Bowl Sunday where they had to bring a
pair of shoes that we could donate to
the charity Dress for Success, and in
exchange I would serve them big bowls
of turkey chili, (Get it? Bring shoes...get bowl!) with the requisite corn bread (see recipe below),
salad and of course, mimosas and Bloody Marys.
Here's Mary
Hoffman holding shoe ice cubes and me holding a non-donated shoe that was actually
the centerpiece.
Well,
they say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, like mother, like son...
ya da, ya da, ya da...
Well, THE son Jason always loved Teddy Pendergrass and sings very much in his style so when Teddy passed away
last month Jason hopped the train to Philly to honor his influence in his life
by attending the funeral.
And who
approaches a reporter and who winds up on the front page and inside cover of
the Daily News...? THE son!! (That's his back in the photo above and looking at his chest in the photo at left!)
I spent
five days in the Cayman Islands speaking for BSCAI (building service
contractors). I love my job! Great group, fab' location AND my client, Stan Doobin took
me to dinner at Eric Ripert's new restaurant, Blue, in the Ritz Carlton. Any foodie like me will know who he is and the dinner was magnificent...so
was the company. Thanks, Stan
Then
the usual...speech hopping from NJ (where I caught up with old friend and fellow
speaker, Ron Karr - see Mikki and Friends below), Cincinnati, LA, Atlanta and of
course time to exhale at my Florida home, aka my "happy place." I LOVE February because of Valentine's
Day and the over-the-top romantic that I am, so hug your loved ones and tell
them that you love them and make a promise to do that every day for the rest of
your life...for me? Pretty please?

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
|

Make Your Move: Change
the Way you Look at Your Business and Increase Your Bottom Line by Alan and Brian Beaulieu
Well, there I am in the Cayman Islands, sharing the platform with
my dear friend, speaker and colleague Brian who hands me a hot-off-the- press,
autographed copy of his new book. Brian will be speaking to my CEO group for
the third time this year and everyone who hears him hinges their forecasting on
precisely what this astute economist (with a personality and sense of humor)
has to share. The book reinforces the process and gives you tools to implement
their techniques. Learn how the
business cycle drives profits, what the trend indicators are, checking points
and a system for seeing into the future. I love this book...and Brian too!

Remember that Lloyd
Price song, You've Got Personality? Well, you all have one; in fact you have a
style uniquely your own, formed by your own self perception, how you think
others see you and by your genetics and life experiences. Helping people
discover their personality style using the Personal Profile System, commonly
known as DiSC, is one of my favorite tools. By helping people discover that they
behave differently in different environments they can recognize and understand
this in others. This helps in sales, customer service, leadership, teamwork and
relationships to foster understanding in dealing with other people. The actual
profiles are self-scoring so
people can use them on their own but then, of course, they wouldn't benefit
from my stylized, informative, humorous presentations☺.
Who do you think you
are? At home? At work?
D- Demanding,
impatient, decisive, risk, ego, control, competitive.
I- Influencing,
emotional, trusting, generous, people, sensitive
S- Steady, family
oriented, friendly, loyal, patient
C- Critical,
competent, conservative, conscientious, cautious
You just thought of
others too, didn't you? Your spouse, your boss, your kids...?

CREATIVE CAPTIONS
|
I love creativity and as a wordsmith I love double entendres, alliteration, onomato... whatever the heck that one was. One of my quirky habits is collecting names of businesses that display any of the above. Here are two of my favorites:
For Goodness Sake (health food
store)
Eye-dia (eye glasses)

SHOE-BE-DOO STORIES
|
Yes, I own about a billion pairs of shoes. And each pair has a story to inspire, a lesson to be learned, a laugh or an "aha!"
There are a lot of mixed emotions going back to your college
reunion. I never had the luxury of
a high school reunion. When you go to school in New York City and graduate with
over 1000 it's pretty tricky to round 'em all up. My college roomies and I
decided it was time, so we met up at dear ol' Ithaca College for our 25th
and these shoes took me back to those memories...the campus, our Dorm 4 (yes, we
lived in a dorm and even had curfews...imagine that?), the frat houses, the pubs...
What we realized after the weekend was that we should have waited till our 50th
as we were the youngest ones there.

JUST JEANNIE, THE SOCIAL MEDIA MAVEN
|
Jeannie Walters helps companies enter into the
social media mayhem - by connecting with customers, prospects
and colleagues in new and powerful ways. Tips from Jeannie:
It's
Valentine's month...so how do you show some social media LOVE?
As
with any relationship those you build via social media require some attention
and nurturing. How best to do this? Well, share the love! If one of your social
media pals posts a link to his or her blog or shares a bit of promotional news,
help them spread the word! Go check out their blog and leave a comment, then
post an update telling your friends where you just commented. This type of
reciprocation will help your friends also do the same for you, but it's really
about showing support for those who provide you with insights, answers and
friendship every day via social media channels. xoxo

If any of you remember the movie or Broadway show
"Auntie Mame" or if you're old enough to admit you remember it, then
you might recall that Mame was famous for her eclectic circle of friends. I
pride myself on that same principle of knowing so many diverse people and
calling many of them my friends.
Meet Ron Karr
When my good friend Ron Karr shared with me the title for
his new book, "Lead, Sell or Get Out of the Way," I asked him if it might be a
little too strong. Don't get me wrong. I like living on the edge in
case you haven't figured it out yet. But many people shy away from "strong"
sales tactics. Ron said the title actually reflects the opposite
behavior. He said today, if you are going to succeed in sales, you need
to be an effective leader. People don't like being sold to. But
they do want help in the acquisition process. That's where the word lead
comes from. Secondly, Ron says if you're going to survive this recession
you have to sell your way out of it. And if you don't take a leadership
role and sell something then you will be pushed out of the way by your competition. That's just the way the world works.
Ron goes on to say that successful sales people don't
abuse their customers. He says you need to speak less and ask better
questions. You need to have what Ron calls an Integrated Dialogue.
I've known Ron for twenty years. He is a highly-regarded business development expert. His new book Lead, Sell or Get
Out of the Way is full of case studies and
examples of how you can supercharge your sales today. I highly recommend
this book. For more information, click here

INSPIRATIONS
|
As the wordsmith that I have always been, from my high school honors in English (and French) to my calling as a professional speaker, each of the "inspirations" that I share every month are from years and years of collecting words that have inspired me.
I have always loved this song
(and of course the singer, Bette Midler) but more important is the message it
conveys. I learned to do it in sign language for a speech I gave many years
ago and it seemed fitting to share this in Valentine's month. (Sam is gagging about now!)
THE ROSE
Some
say love, it is a river
that
drowns the tender reef.
Some
say love, it is a razor
that
leaves your soul to grieve.
Some
say love, it is a hunger
an
endless, aching need.
I
say love, it is a flower
and
you, its only seed.
It's
the heart afraid of breaking
that
never learns to dance.
It's
the dream afraid of waking
that
never takes a chance.
It's
the one who won't be taken
who
cannot seem to give
and
the soul afraid of dying,
that
never learns to live.
When
the night has been too lonely
and
the road has been too long,
and
you think that love is only
for
the lucky and the strong.
Just
remember in the winter
far
beneath the bitter snow.
Lies
the seed that with the sun's love,
in
the spring, becomes the rose.
