I LOVE THIS BOOK!

 Tribes:
We need
YOU to Lead Us
by Seth
Godin
I've
read four out of twelve of Seth Godin's bestsellers; The Dip, The Big Moo, Purple Cow and
now Tribes. I love how he thinks plus they're really quick reads, great
for type A personalities like moi with short attention spans. As the Chair of
two executive groups for Vistage, I am always fascinated by leadership in my role
of "herding cats."
A "tribe" according to Godin is any
group of people, large or small who are connected to one another, a leader and
an idea. Social networking and the internet have erased all boundaries of geography,
cost and time. You MUST see this
video on YouTube.
Who is going to lead all these
"tribes?" You?

I was working with a high tech company, Ozi-Soft in
Australia for a week, doing a different program every day for all the different
layers of the company from the executive team down to administrative staff. The
challenge was new thinking and problem solving. And creativity is the answer.
Creativity lives in everyone. We just need to trigger mechanisms that activate
and nurture this potential; to find the concepts, ideas, and techniques that
stir the creative juices.
There are two major reasons why creativity is
important: One is change. When new information comes along and circumstances
change, it is no longer possible to solve today's problems with yesterday's
solutions. Then it becomes necessary to find new answers, solutions, and ideas.
The second reason for generating new ideas is that it's a lot of fun! Mental
exercise and innovation is a result of playfulness, good humor, and the ability
to leave aside logic, practicality, and conventional wisdom once in awhile.
Learn to think differently by playing mental games that stimulate your
thinking. We all need ways to generate new ideas, and creative thinking is the
means to that end. Sit down and write out what it would be like if you lived
your life backwards. Then read
Roger von Oech's classic, A Whack on the Side of the Head to experience his version of what that would be like.

CREATIVE CAPTIONS
|
I love creativity and as a wordsmith I love double entendres, alliteration, onomato... whatever the heck that one was. One of my quirky habits is collecting names of businesses that display any of the above. Here are two of my favorites:
DOODY CALLS
(I swear I did not make that up - it's a franchise for pet
waste removal services for homeowners)
(Thank you Chloe Fuhrman for acknowledging my motto with
this one
) *********************************************************** I hope you'll continue to send me ones you know of. Please send to mikki@mikkiwilliams.com

SHOE-BE-DOO STORIES
|
Yes, I own about a billion pairs of shoes. And each pair has a story to inspire, a lesson to be learned, a laugh or an "aha!"
You all know by now if you read the ezine that I bought a second
home in Naples, Florida and have made some wonderful new friends...the latest and
greatest, Sue Ryan, originally from Chicago who I affectionately call 'Google' as
she has the answer to everything. She introduced me to one of the most inspiring women I have ever met,
Mavis Rush who runs the fitness center at The Ritz Carlton. Mavis is 73. We went
out one night and she was wearing a mini dress that would have put a 20-year
old to shame. The gals decided it
was time for me to see my new environment so they took me to the hot spots of
Naples from the new Blue Martini to downtown haunts like Campiello's, Handsome
Harry's and Tommy Bahamas. Soooooooo, I wore these "hot" shoes...nuff said.

MIKKI MOUTH: QUOTATIONS I WISH I'D SAID AND SOME I DID SAY!
|
Enjoy a quote each month from my new book - some funny, some poignant, some professional, some just darn cute!
"Life is short, Break
the rules, Forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love truly, laugh uncontrollably, and
never regret anything that made you smile. Life may not be the party we hoped
for, but while we're here we should dance." Anonymous

HE WHO LAUGHS...LASTS!
|
 In honor of those celebrating the Jewish holidays this month:
Jewish President calls Mom to come to inauguration,
she says she
has nothing to wear, "No one to do my hair and I will
miss my mah
jong game." He says, "I'll send Air Force One to pick
you up and
they'll have a hairdresser on board to do your hair
and I'll have
you back before your next game." She finally gives in and finds
she is seated next to the Italian diplomat. He says,
"Who are you?" She says, "Who am I? Who am I? You see that man up
there? Well the
guy next to him is my son, the Doctor."

JUST JEANNIE, THE SOCIAL MEDIA MAVEN
|
Jeannie Walters helps companies enter into the
social media mayhem - by connecting with customers, prospects
and colleagues in new and powerful ways. Tips from Jeannie:
So, just like
you are in real life, be wary of people you don't know promising things that
sound too good to be true. I doubt you joined Twitter or Facebook to make a
million dollars overnight, so why fall prey to those promising it? I
personally don't advocate auto-following on Twitter (although there are plenty
of people who do) because you end up connected with people who aren't interested
in relationships or business connections. Find the RIGHT connections through
showcasing who you really are, participating in communities of like-minded
people, and following only those people who truly interest you. While the
quantity of connections might not grow as quickly as those schemers, the
quality of connections will be much more worth your while.
If you're
interested in connecting with me, feel free to connect via Twitter (see below) or LinkedIn and just
send me a note about why we should be connected. I'm always happy to connect
with great people - just don't promise to make me a millionaire!

FABULOUS FRIENDS
|
If any of you remember the movie or Broadway show "Auntie Mame" or if you're old enough to admit you remember it, then you might recall that Mame was famous for her eclectic circle of friends. I pride myself on that same principle of knowing so many diverse people and calling many of them my friends. I would like to profile them and their expertise by offering this monthly addition of tips, tactics and techniques shared by experts in their field. Although someone once told me not to refer to myself as an expert as an ex is a has-been and a spurt is little more than a drip. Scott and I met back in the 80's (which btw is coming back this year in fashion...yay, now my shoulder pads which
I never stopped wearing will be back "in"). I digress. We were both new to the
fitness industry and carving our paths. Scott Cole is now America's
Premier Tai Chi and Fitness Expert, is a former National Aerobic Champion, star
of Abs of Steel, and has contributed to over 500 publications worldwide (Men's
Fitness, The Wall Street Journal). A lecturer in over 30 countries, Scott
is a frequent guest on television (The View, CNN Headline News).
Scott said, "For a while my slogan was Lifting
Spirits and Buttocks to New Heights, but I'm not sure America was quite
ready for that one!!!" Scott's goal has ALWAYS been to motivate at all levels,
addressing the whole person, not just individual parts.
Moments are important, and people can be gone in the blink
of an eye. Scott lost his father and sister in separate health-related
incidents and it was the slow, flowing, gentle grace of Tai Chi that brought him
back from the depths of sadness and depression. His goal has been to bring
"Chi" (Energy) to Life in all forms, from the slowest, most still,
and meditative to the fastest, most full-on expression imaginable.

INSPIRATIONS
|
As the wordsmith that I have always been, from my high school honors in English (and French) to my calling as a professional speaker, each of the "inspirations" that I share every month are from years and years of collecting words that have inspired me.
WINNER vs. LOSER
The Winner - is always part of the answer;
The
Loser - is always part of the problem;
The
Winner - always has a program;
The
Loser - always has an excuse;
The
Winner - says "Let me do it for you;"
The
Loser - says "That's not my job;"
The
Winner - sees a answer for every problem;
The
Loser - sees a problem for every answer;
The
Winner - sees a green near every sand trap;
The
Loser - sees two or three sand traps near every green;
The
Winner - says, "It may be difficult, but it's possible;"
The
Loser - says, "It may be possible, but it's too difficult."
Be a Winner!
