Introducing REVEREND Mikki Williams!
It's been a busy, eclectic, hectic past month with lots to share but it all pales in comparison to the opportunity and honor of officiating at a friend's wedding. But wait, more excitement... I went to the Eye Ball (don't you just love the name?), the premier black tie event for the Illinois Eye Institute held at The Ritz Carlton, headed by one of my most cherished and prominent Vistage members, Dr. Len Messner. Then to my fabulous friends',The Gerstens, at the wedding of their daughter Julie at Carnivale (see Shoe Be Doo story below).
Now on to the "piece de resistance." Anna Belyaev (one of the founding members of my CEO Vistage group) and her fiance, Phil Timyan, invited me to perform their marriage ceremony at their 1920s nautical-themed wedding extravanganza. Even though I am an experience junkie I surprised Anna by telling her I needed to think about it. I didn't have to think too long...the next day I became a Reverend through the Universal Life Church (this li'l Jewish gal). The ceremony was part them, part me, part Google and part attorney, John Huston who shared his experiences with me. For details about the amazing wedding weekend, read it all on my blog:

I LOVE THIS BOOK!

The Four Agreements A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz
This is a classic! And sometimes it's good to return for a reread, a refresh on a classic like Man's Search for Meaning, Think and Grow Rich, The Road Less Traveled, ya da ya da ya da. The Four Agreements are simple yet profound; Be Impeccable with Your Word, in other words, speak with integrity and say what you mean. Don't Take Anything Personally and understand that nothing others do is because of you. Don't Make Assumptions, instead find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Always Do Your Best and know that our best is going to change from moment to moment but under any circumstance, simply do your best and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret. Which one of these will you start to live by today?

I've always been a proponent of goal setting. Each year with my executive groups I seek to try new methods of goal setting to hold them accountable and to make it visible. I believe that goal-oriented people continually challenge themselves to be the best they can be. They know that "change is inevitable and growth is optional." They are committed to a mission to develop their talents to the fullest. They understand potential and how their creativity evolves when they overcome obstacles on their way to goal achievement. The difference between success and failure is goal setting. Only three percent of all professionals ever bother to set goals.
Goals cause us to stretch and grow. If they are challenging and believable, we become more, and that is the wisdom of goal setting. It is not what you go after in life that counts; it is what you become along the way. Setting and achieving your goals is the "how-to" part of your success. Start by using the simplified, Mikki-ized version of the old acronym SMART now known as SCHMART. Goals should be: Specific Committed Harmonious Measurable Actionable Relevant Timely
Now go on out there and set some goals!!

CREATIVE CAPTIONS

I love creativity and as a wordsmith I love double entendres, alliteration, onomato... whatever the heck that one was. One of my quirky habits is collecting names of businesses that display any of the above. Here are two of my favorites:

SHOE-BE-DOO STORIES
|
Yes, I own about a billion pairs of shoes. And each pair has a story to inspire, a lesson to be learned, a laugh or an "aha!"
Ah, May/June, weddings galore, three so far, all completely different in feel and scope. Last month you read about the Las Vegas extravaganza of my friends Evi and Jay Allen from my ol' hometown of Westport, CT and their daughter's nuptials at the fabulous Ritz Carlton in Las Vegas. And the feature this month is the wedding of one of my CEOs from Vistage, Anna Belyaev, and her now-husband Phil Timyan. But now to the shoes and the other unique wedding this month thrown by very old (not in age) and dear friends, Steve and Lori Gersten for their daughter Julie who I've known since she was a baby. It was held at Carnivale, a monstrous Latin colorful restaurant that they had taken over completely. Thinking of all the color in this place, I was inclined to wear something very colorful, a bright kelly green dress and these shoes (OK, OK, I'm always inclined to wear something colorful). The amazing thing was looking around and seeing EVERYONE in the LBD (guys, that stands for little black dress) Take a risk, people, wear color, be bold - life is too short to always wear black.☺ I love "living a technicolor life" (a compliment from best bud, Rande Gedaliah).

MIKKI MOUTH: QUOTATIONS I WISH I'D SAID AND SOME I DID SAY!
|
Enjoy a quote each month from my new book - some funny, some poignant, some professional, some just darn cute!
OK, you know I love to quote myself...I used this in the wedding vows; "If you're wrong, admit it, if you're right, shut up. You can either be right or you can be married."

VISTAGE VIGNETTE
|
As a speaker resource for Vistage International for 15 years and Chair of two groups for seven years I have the opportunity to interact with some of the most dynamic business leaders. Vistage is the world's largest executive organization with 15,000 members worldwide. It is to my delight to profile one of them each month.
Gretchen Hartke Managing Member of Hartke Designs, a learning consulting company
Gretchen Hartke is a member of my Vistage Key group which combines key employees, small business owners and start-up entrepreneurs who exponentially want to grow themselves and their roles in business while benefiting the overall goals of their companies.
Nothing makes Gretchen Hartke more excited than a conference table/hard drive full of source material from a client with one request: take this jumble of information and turn it into something that's going to help people learn and produce the business results they need.
A teacher at heart, Gretchen started her career as a middle school history teacher and later earned her MS in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University. She's created learning experiences that produce results for organizations like Walgreens, Pfizer, McDonald's, American Medical Association, Manpower and The Alzheimer's Association. She's a farm kid from Southern Indiana who somehow managed to become a skier and sailor. She races in the Rhodes 19 fleet out of Montrose Harbor in Chicago and heads to waters far, far away any chance she gets. When she's not working, on the water, or on a mountain, you'll find her at the dog beach with her husband Eric and their two Portuguese Water Dogs, Marco and Ocho.
For more information call Gretchen at 847.833.7795 or email her at gretchen@hartkedesigns.com.

HE WHO LAUGHS...LASTS!

I like the story of the woman who had an artist paint a portrait of her covered with jewels. Her explanation: "If I die and my husband remarries, I want his next wife to go crazy looking for the jewels."

INTRODUCING... JUST JEANNIE, THE SOCIAL MEDIA MAVEN
|
As someone who is brand-centric, I understand the importance of social media, social networking, viral marketing or whatever else you might call it. So I have been kicking and screaming while being dragged into it all. I am Facebooked, Linked In, Twittered, blogged, YouTubed and Plaxo'd with more to come. Thank you Rick Dorfman for making me do this, thank you John Page for tolerating my frustration and thank you, Jeannie Walters for your brilliant teaching style and wonderful patience and lay terminology. I know many of you are dipping your proverbial toe in this water or else you are already an expert but for those of you overwhelmed by it all like "moi," Jeannie will be a welcome relief each month as she shares some tips.
Jeannie Walters is an avid customer advocate. She is President of Vox, Inc., a Chicago-based consulting firm that counsels businesses on how to create ideal customer experiences to increase overall profitability. Jeannie advises companies on how strategic improvement of key touchpoints like social media can help solve business problems and gain a competitive advantage. Since 2008, Jeannie's been helping companies enter into the social media mayhem - helping them connect with customers, prospects and colleagues in new and powerful ways.
Okay, let's talk about getting started. Did you know that one-half of small businesses are using social media now? And that number is growing by the minute!
Two Tips: 1. It's ok to Start Small & Jump in! A lot of people are hesitant about even creating a profile on Twitter, Facebook, or Linked In before they have an official "Strategy." I say go ahead and jump in as yourself - it's a great way to explore the different tools and observe how others are successful. You can start with one - Facebook is my recommendation - then go from there. 2. As you get used to social media, set up some reminders to use the tools. If you're serious about using social media, it's important to dedicate some time toward it. It's a habit you're developing. Create reminders for yourself to check out your Facebook page or your Twitter stream at certain times during the day. I recommend 3 times a day if you can swing it - once in the morning, sometime between 11 am - 2 pm Central, and once at the end of your workday. This way, you'll have a chance to interact with people across all US timezones. Questions about social media? Contact me here: Jeannie.walters@voxinc.com

FUN, FABULOUS, FEARLESS FRIENDS
|
If any of you remember the movie or Broadway show "Auntie Mame" or if you're old enough to admit you remember it, then you might recall that Mame was famous for her eclectic circle of friends. I pride myself on that same principle of knowing so many diverse people and calling many of them my friends. I would like to profile them and their expertise by offering this monthly addition of tips, tactics and techniques shared by experts in their field. Although someone once told me not to refer to myself as an expert as an ex is a has-been and a spurt is little more than a drip. Many of you know I used to be a professional dancer in NY and when I gave up that career I started a dance studio and company in Connecticut. My studio was named "a dance class" in tribute to one of my many famous students, Wayne Cilento who opened as an original A Chorus Line cast member (the "I Can Do That" character) and is the choreographer of "Wicked." My other students included Joanne Woodward, Martha Stewart, the children of Erica Jong, Diana Ross...OK, OK enough name dropping:-) Many of my not so famous students went on to illustrious careers in dance and theatre like Tim O'Keefe, Houston Ballet, David Scala, La Cage Aux Folles, Jinger Kalin as a headliner in Vegas/Reno, Steve Sirico, part of international adagio team, OK, OK, enough name dropping:-) I had a dance company, Mikki Williams Dancers (always use your name, it's part of my early accidental branding, listen to my teleseminar this week to really learn it) OK, OK, enough plugging:-) Here is Greg Covert, a former member of my dance company that I hadn't seen in 20 years, calling me up that he was here with "A Chorus Line," would love to get together and catch up. And so we did. Greg, originally from CT, has been traveling the world, appearing at the Lido in Paris, on cruise ships, dinner theatres, tours, all as a dancer and now stage manager and I'm just so proud of the career he has built over these past two decades.

INSPIRATIONS
|
As the wordsmith that I have always been, from my high school honors in English (and French) to my calling as a professional speaker, each of the "inspirations" that I share every month are from years and years of collecting words that have inspired me.
Anna's father, Bob Stowall, read this during the wedding ceremony I officiated this month.
Why Marriage? By Mari Nichols-Haining
Because to the depths of me, I long to love one person, With all my heart, my soul, my mind, my body...
Because I need a forever friend to trust with the intimacies of me, Who won't hold them against me, Who loves me when I'm unlovable, Who sees the small child in me, and Who looks for the divine potential of me...
Because I need to cuddle in the warmth of the night With someone who thanks God for me, With someone I feel blessed to hold...
Because marriage means opportunity To grow in love, in friendship...
Because marriage is a discipline To be added to a list of achievements...
Because marriages do not fail, people fail When they enter into marriage Expecting another to make them whole...
Because, knowing this, I promise myself to take full responsibility For my spiritual, mental and physical wholeness I create me, I take half of the responsibility for my marriage Together we create our marriage...
Because with this understanding The possibilities are limitless.
