But first... TOP FIVE REASONS WHY RACING IS BETTER THAN SEX
|
Number 5 - It is socially acceptable to race while others watch.
Number 4 - Your car will never stop running just because you forgot the day you bought it.
Number 3 - You don't have to sit through dinner and a show before you race.
Number 2 - Your race car won't leave you if you drive another car.
And the number 1 reason why racing is better than sex: During a real hot lap, if you call your car the wrong name, it will still finish the race.

HOW I GOT THIS GIG
|
I was giving a speech in Indianapolis on August 21, 2007 to a group I had been to previously. In my speech I refer to my "experience list" that I've always kept. It's not just about travel, it's about the experiences I want. I was giving examples of how I mushed with the dogs in Alaska, been on an African safari, the Tony Awards in NY, Octoberfest in Munich and the Sundance Film Festival, to name a few. I mentioned some that were still on my list like I want to Tango in Argentina, enjoy a Mint Julep at the Kentucky Derby, participate in the Indy 500. When the speech was over Courtney and Ben Cole (left) approached me and invited me to be their guest and to drive in some special events at Indy. Courtney and Monica Cole own the biggest Chevrolet dealership in Indianapolis and one of the top 100 in the country, The Hare Auto Group. It's the sixth generation starting with the horse and buggy.
I kept in touch with them all year not quite sure how this was going to play out but I can tell you it exceeded my expectations. Oh, BTW (minor point) I sold my car when I moved to Chicago eight years ago, gave up driving and haven't driven since. Okay, okay, so I rented a car two days before I left just to practice, put seven miles on it and was up to speed (pun intended). I was ready to hit the Speedway. After all, I would only be driving a Corvette one day and a Silverado truck the next and wouldn't be going that fast. No problem. Little did I know...

THE DAY BEFORE: THE CORVETTE RALLY
|
Three hundred Corvette owners were invited to drive in a rally around the Speedway. When I arrived with my friend Karen, Courtney had a brand new bright yellow Corvette convertible waiting for me. The synchronistic moment for me was that my very FIRST car was a silver blue Corvette. What we didn't know was that we were an hour away from the track and had a police escort the entire way which was so cool. I didn't know I would be driving at 70mph on a major highway in a new state after not driving for eight years. Needless to say Karen white-knuckled it the whole way and my heart was a-pumpin'. Courtney, you're not reading this, are you?
We arrived at the track around 4 p.m. on Saturday and they lined us up at the entrance. We then drove the Corvettes around the track at about 40mph and it was soooooooooo cool to be driving where "my" Danica Patrick would be driving the next day (unfortunate outcome however). It was almost surreal to realize I was driving on the very track that Mario Andretti, Dario Franchetti, Helio Casteneves, etc. drove on.
After that we were treated to a dinner outdoors at the track, entertainment and then a private tour of the basement of the Speedway Museum, a place where no on gets to go. We weren't allowed to take pictures so I took notes. Here are some of the cars I saw:
Stoddard Dayton, the first pace car 1910 Steam Engine 1927 Mercedes 1927 Lincoln 1922 Bentley 1929 Packard 1910 Cadillac for $1600 1924 Deusenberg 1937 Cord 1930 BMW 1932 Studebaker 1916 Rauch & Lang electric 1910 Lozier 1907 Fiat 1908 Sears Motor Buggy featured in their catalog for $395.00

THE INDY 500, SUNDAY, MAY 25, 2008
|
I was one of 40 drivers invited to drive a Silverado truck with three military personnel standing in the back for the pre-race. We lined up outside the track and when we drove onto the speedway, the roar of 300,000 people standing and cheering brought tears to my eyes. It was THE most awesome experience to be driving that truck in front of all those people on the very path of all the famous drivers that have raced there.
We were then invited to watch the race from the General Motors Suite where we had headsets to listen to the drivers and their pit crews. We had endless food and many photo ops. There were many celebrities at the race as well, from Denzel Washington, Julianne Hough, Kristi Yamaguchi and Gomer Pyle singing, "Back Home in Indiana". It was yet another one to check off the list and another memory to cherish.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Courtney and Ben! It just proves that if you put out to the universe all that you want you will very likely get it. Was that too Ghandi for you?
Thanks for reading. We'll be back with you shortly with the June ezine and thanks for spending time with us. If you're not getting our photos it has to do with your settings. Fix 'em, don't miss these shots.
