"Go Green!" It's the latest environmental frenzy to save our pollution-ridden world from ourselves. In the printing industry, this phenomenon is even more pressing (yes, the pun is intended). From recycled paper to environmentally friendly chemicals, and even striving for 'chemical-free' machines, it is becoming more expensive to be a printer in this Go Green world.

At Minuteman Press of Rancho Cucamonga, we have always done our best to be on the environmentally friendly side of things. Our most commonly used paper brands, such as: Classic, Exact, and Utopia all carry recycled lines containing up to 60% recycled fibers and 30% postconsumer waste. We have always made it our practice to recycle our used metal plates at the local recycling plant (which usually turns into a nice pizza lunch for our pressman!) Furthermore, we store all of our hazardous liquid waste in large barrels and have the appropriate disposal companies pick them up as needed.

But now the economy, and our own conscience, is telling us we need to "Go Greener." There is industry gossip of requiring that ALL paper must be partially recycled.  Many of the new plate imagesetters and processors are going to a chemical free process. This results in more environmentally friendly waste and long run savings on purchasing the chemicals used in today's equipment. However, this technology results in significantly more costly manufacturing as well as different plates that are sold at a higher cost per unit. We are currently doing research on the next best Direct-to-Plate system to purchase. The machine of choice will fit all current environmental standards, and should be able to stand up to the new standards that we will soon be faced with.

Our goal at Minuteman Press of Rancho Cucamonga is to keep looking at ways to improve our services, while becoming even more environmentally friendly and not having to pass on too much of the cost to you, our valued customer. We intend to keep updating you on how this may affect your printing needs, and we would love to work together with you to find ways to keep providing you with a quality product, while at the same time helping the environment without having to raise costs too significantly.
