A Time for Reflection and Planning
|
|
| The school year ended with a bustle of culminating events: competitive sports championships, impressive musical recitals, outstanding theater, fun field day, emotional yearbook signings, final examinations and, of course, Commencement. And then it happened... The final packing-up of dorm rooms and lockers, final goodbyes to friends and faculty, and then, a little surreally, students left campus. Most will be back in the fall after a welcome summer vacation, and others are moving on to the next chapter in their lives.
The Office of Admissions, however, will be open all summer, and cordially invites prospective students and their families to attend an Open House. Summer Open Houses begin in Orr Commons in the center of campus (follow signs) at 10:00 AM promptly. After brief welcoming remarks, you will tour our beautiful campus and receive a description of our programs. You will see a short video and participate in a discussion about the application process. Closing remarks will take place about 12:00. Please call 845-534-9860 to request more information or leave your name and telephone number to register.

Community Celebrates the Seniors' Accomplishments
The Storm King School's Class of 2012 graduated on Saturday, June 2, in the Walter Reade, Jr., Theatre. On the evening before graduation, seniors spoke candidly and with appreciation about their lives at SKS during a wonderfully emotional and memorable Senior Service. Then, the next morning was full of excitement and anticipation as proud families, friends, faculty, and staff prepared for the big day. At ten o'clock, the 41 graduates entered the theatre with bright smiles escorted by English chair and resident bagpiper Jeremy Freeman.
Many of the graduates took part in the ceremony, making it especially meaningful. Students Alejandra R '12 (Columbia), Mehdy O '12 (France), Anel Z '12 (Kazakhstan), Jiaying W '12 (People's Republic of China), Julius S '12 (Slovakia), Beum Jun P '12 (South Korea), Franklin L '12 (Taiwan), Kirilo B '12 (Ukraine), Phuong V '12 (Vietnam), and Andrew T '12 (United States) welcomed the crowd in their native languages. In addition, sophomore Tung "Bobby" C sang America the Beautiful, The Greatest Love of All, and the School's Alma Mater.
Herbert G. Gelhardt, III '48 delivered the commencement address, regaling the crowd with stories of his adventures. Herb holds several degrees and a pilot's license. He served as a marine jet fighter pilot in the Korean War and has lived all over the world. He commented, "...the basics that I learned at SKS pulled me through, and then I followed what came my way.... As each new 'start' comes, and each new achievement is strived for, my advice is to do your best, persevere and pursue them all with a positive attitude and tenacity." Following Gelhardt's address, Head of School Helen "Steevie" Chinitz and Assistant Head of School Jonathan Lamb presented the graduation awards. And finally, the much-anticipated moment arrived: the presentation of diplomas. One by one, the graduates crossed the stage and received their diplomas from Ms. Chinitz and Chair of the Board of Trustees Michael A. Brower '63.

 | Spring Musical Gets Rave Reviews!

Students Reveal Dance, Music, and Comedy
Members of the school and local community enjoyed three fantastic opportunities to see The Storm King School's spring musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. Directed by fine arts chair Anne Fulton, with music directed by artist-in-residence James Rensink and choreographed by dance teacher Jeanette Lyn Perk, the musical was a hit!
Students brought the cast of eclectic characters to life, delivering the musical and dance numbers beautifully. The story opens in the living room of "Man in Chair," played by Alex B. A witty musical fanatic, he plays a recording of the fictional musical comedy The Drowsy Chaperone on the record player and welcomes the audience into the story as it plays out through his fantasies.
Audiences raved about the toe-tapping music, the impressive choreography, and the delivery of the talented actors and actresses. The eye-catching set, designed by Harold Heno, even included a plane "landing" on stage. Everyone had a great time, including the cast and crew. It all came together nicely. | SKS Field Day: A Spring Tradition

Ball Games, Giant Slip-and-Slide, and Bright T-Shirts
A BBQ picnic lunch with cotton candy, a super-sized slip-and-slide, a kickball game, a flag-football game, and a scavenger hunt made for an exciting Field Day for Storm King students and faculty on Wednesday, May 23th. After several days of rain, the sun came out just in time for the festivities, making the slip-and-slide and water wars that much more fun. Students wore brightly colored t-shirts, color-coded by class, and competed against each other in the field games. Many lounged in the shade signing their classmates' t-shirts and yearbooks, and several seniors painted the picnic tables--a senior Field Day tradition. Everyone had a fantastic afternoon. Students Paint Trail Blazes in Black Rock
On the sunny afternoon of May 15th, a group of students embarked on a community service activity. Accompanying math and science teacher Warren Mumford to the western edge of Black Rock Forest, the students painted new trail blazes, or trail markers, on the Sackett Trail.
Mr. Mumford is a volunteer trail maintainer for the New York/New Jersey Trail Conference. The students scraped the old blazes off trees, prepared the surface for new blazes, and painted the new blazes--bright yellow circles to help guide hikers along the trail. What would have taken Mr. Mumford eight hours to complete alone, the enthusiastic group was able to accomplish in just two hours. It was time well spent, sprucing up the trail and enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings.
Although only one-hour north of New York City, The Storm King School benefits from its natural surroundings, which include a 6,000-acre outdoor classroom of nature preserves and parks adjacent to campus.

Performing Arts Department & Creative Arts Center Present
SKS highlighted the progress of its young performers in two special presentations on May 24th.
Students in Mr. Frank Annunziata's Creative Arts Center presented a number of works in an all-school assembly, which included guitar, ukulele, an original song performed by Bobby C., and short videos featuring public service announcements and commercials written, produced, and edited--with awesome special effects--by video production students.
In the evening, Mr. Martin Smith's piano students and Ms. Jeanette Perk's dance students performed in a stunning recital in front of a packed house. Seniors Jiaying "Katrina" W, Andrew T, and Dwight R-H each played a few hand-chosen pieces. At the request of piano teacher Martin Smith, the crowd enthusiastically made the sound of wind blowing through trees in place of applause so as to not break the concentration of the pianists. The sound of wind gave way to a cheerful applause at the end. Dance students then took the stage for seventeen outstanding pieces. The audience enjoyed a variety of solos and group numbers, as well as a sprinkling of dance styles, including ballet, tap, and modern dance.
The Storm King School is well-known for its amazing arts opportunities.

As soon as students headed off for summer vacation, the Storm King faculty settled in for a couple of days of professional development and planning for this new tool--the iPad. |
| | Founded in 1867, The Storm King School celebrates a long tradition of helping students translate potential into success as they prepare for college and meaningful lives. Through academic classes, outstanding fine and performing arts, competitive and club sports, and interesting extracurricular activities, the faculty and staff offer students in grades 8-12 opportunities to enrich themselves through learning and confidence building. For college-bound students with learning differences, a small (35 students) school-within-a-school program called The Mountain Center, offers specialized, differentiated instruction in up to four core classes. Mountain Center students are full participants in the SKS community. In addition, The Learning Center offers support to any SKS student who needs extra help with study and organizational skills. Boarding and day options are available.
