May News Focus on The Arts
|
|
| This is the time of year when school communities show off and celebrate the culmination of the year's efforts--academic accomplishments, physical achievements, creative endeavors, and cherished friendships. This month's newsletter especially highlights the Fine Arts, Performing Arts, and Creative Arts programs at The Storm King School.
After reading the stories below, feel free to browse the publications page on our website by clicking here to see past newsletter stories of SKS arts and read our creative arts and literary magazine The Voice. Our small community boasts enormous talent and achievement!
The Office of Admission cordially invites prospective students and their families to attend an Open House. This Saturday's Open House featuring The Arts will begin in Walter Reade, Jr., Theatre in the center of campus (follow signs) at 10:00 AM promptly. After brief welcoming remarks, you will tour our beautiful campus and receive a description of our programs. You will see a short video and participate in a discussion about the application process. Closing remarks will take place about 12:00. Please call 845-534-9860 to request more information or leave your name and telephone number to register.
For a more personal look at the School, you are invited to arrange a Student for a Day visit. Prospective students arrive in the morning and shadow a current student, attending classes and meeting current students and faculty. The visiting student goes to lunch with his or her host student and then returns to the Admissions Office for an interview. These visits are the best way for a prospective student to get a feel for the School. Hurry! There is only one week left to see classes in action. Student for a Day visits are offered only through the third week in May. Summer visits will include a tour of campus and a student interview. It is not too late to apply. SKS accepts applications on a rolling basis, as long as there is space.

 | Spirit Week Brings out School Pride

School Celebrates with Many Community Events
Students and faculty embraced Spirit Week with great pride. April 23-27 was packed with spring-time activities. During the Senior Slumber Retreat at the lodge in Black Rock Forest, faculty members brought appreciative students a "potluck" dinner of favorite home-made dishes, followed by a night hike and campfire.
The week also included a morning of campus beautification projects in celebration of Earth Day, an Art Show in the Dining Room, athletic games, and a week of themed dress. Monday was Pajama Day, Tuesday was Backwards Day, Wednesday was School Colors Day, Thursday was Decade Day, and Friday was Twin Day.

All members must maintain a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale and contribute positively to the School and the community through volunteer work, leadership opportunities, and a good attitude. Kyle M reads his winning poem

Storm King's young poets, Kyle M. '14 and Polina G. '13, recently won the Cornwall Public Library's annual Timothy Mumford Memorial Poetry Competition. Kyle won Best Poem for the 15 and 16-year-old group, and Polina won Best Poem for the 17 and 18-year-old group as well as Best Poem Overall. A panel of independent judges rated poetry submissions in five categories. Kyle and Polina read their poems and accepted their awards on Saturday, May 5, at the Cornwall Public Library. Polina said, "Receiving the overall prize in the Timothy Mumford Poetry Competition was a great honor for me. It was really exciting to represent The Storm King School." Kyle added, "...there were many good poets I had the chance to see and hear, and I'm looking forward to submitting again next year." The Timothy Mumford Memorial Poetry Competition was initiated by the Cornwall Public Library to honor the memory of young poet and musician Timothy Mumford, son of Cornwall residents Warren and Mary Mumford. Mr. Mumford is a math and science teacher at SKS. To read Polina's poem "The Adventures of Salvador Dali," click here. To see Kyle's poem "Log In," click here. Also, keep an eye out for these award-winning poems in the next issue of the School's arts and literary magazine, The Voice, which can be accessed on our publications page here. Spring Musical: The Drowsy Chaperone
The Storm King School's Department of Performing Arts will present The Drowsy Chaperone on May 18, 19, & 20 in the Walter Reade, Jr., Theatre. Evening performances are at 7:30 PM and the Sunday matinee is at 2:00 PM. Twenty-five students are involved in the production, which includes many dance numbers.
Performing Arts Department Chair Anne Fulton offers this synopsis: "To chase his blues away, a modern day musical theatre addict known simply as 'Man in Chair' drops the needle on his favorite record--the 1928 musical comedy The Drowsy Chaperone. From the crackle of his hi-fi, the uproariously funny musical magically bursts to life on stage, telling the tale of a pampered Broadway starlet who wants to give up show business to get married, her producer who sets out to sabotage the nuptials, her chaperone, the debonair groom, the dizzy chorus girl, the Latin lover, and a pair of gangsters who double as pastry chefs. Man in Chair's infectious love of The Drowsy Chaperone speaks to anyone who has ever been transported by the theatre." For tickets and information, please call (845) 534-4135.

Students Present Food, Crafts, Music, and Games
The dining hall bustled with activity as students, faculty, and staff milled around sampling foods and learning about various cultures and traditions at SKS's annual International Fair on May 2. Students in foreign language and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes chose a country--their country of origin for many--and prepared colorful poster boards, signature dishes, crafts, music, and more. Offerings included an assortment of teas, soups, and cheeses, Spanish "street food," Tamales Mexicanos, Kebabs grilled to order, Vietnamese Summer Rolls, and much, much more. There were face paintings, music, palm readings, and games in addition to all the food. Countries represented included China, Korea, Kazakhstan, Hungary, Spain, France, Ukraine, Russia, Vietnam, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Turkey, Panama, Slovakia, and Chile. Foreign Languages Department Chair and event organizer Anna Stein-Obreros described some of the thirty-five projects that students presented this year and said in summary, "....the fair was, as always, a great cultural and culinary experience that was enjoyed by the entire Storm King community."

Science Classes and Crew Team Study Ecosystems Firsthand
 | | Jib of the Clearwater with Storm King Mountain in the background |
The sun was shining and the wind was strong on May 10 when SKS's environmental science classes and crew team boarded the Hudson River Clearwater Sloop and headed out for an afternoon of environmental investigation and sailing.
The Clearwater was built by folk music and environmental legend Pete Seeger and a group of friends in the late 1960s in an effort to save the Hudson River from increasingly degrading pollution. The 106-foot long replica of the traditional sailing vessels that worked the on the river is now on the National Register of Historic Places and is known as America's Environmental Flagship.

Evan E '16 had a blast as the group journeyed down the Hudson in what felt like an old-time pirate ship, tying knots and pulling up nets, getting a first-hand look at the types of fish and other creatures that call the Hudson home, singing "working songs" to keep the crew in rhythm as they performed chores, learning to control the ship with its tiller, and discovering the history of the river. These experiences are meant to educate and stimulate environmental stewardship, and it was clear from Evan's enthusiasm and that of the other students that the day's adventure was a success.

 | Prom 2012

"An Enchanted Forest"
The Storm King School's Prom was held on Friday, April 20. Mountainville Manor in Mountainville, NY provided a beautiful setting for the festive event. Guests arrived in tuxedos and gowns, with hair done up and nails polished, looking and feeling fabulous. They mingled, took pictures, enjoyed a scrumptious buffet dinner, and danced the night away to the sounds of PJ the DJ, who entertained the crowd with special effects and lighting. Special guests Head of School Helen "Steevie" Chinitz and her husband, Richard, had the honor of crowning this year's Prom King and Queen, Frank C. and Allie Joy Z., who were selected by the senior class. Chaperone Kaitlin Nolan and other faculty members stopped by to see everyone dressed up and to show off some moves on the dance floor. It was a memorable evening all around! |
| | Founded in 1867, The Storm King School celebrates a long tradition of helping students translate potential into success as they prepare for college and meaningful lives. Through academic classes, outstanding fine and performing arts, competitive and club sports, and interesting extracurricular activities, the faculty and staff offer students in grades 8-12 opportunities to enrich themselves through learning and confidence building. For college-bound students with learning differences, a small (35 students) school-within-a-school program called The Mountain Center, offers specialized, differentiated instruction in up to four core classes. Mountain Center students are full participants in the SKS community. In addition, The Learning Center offers support to any SKS student who needs extra help with study and organizational skills. Boarding and day options are available.
