In late winter each year, Valentine's Day arrives as a welcome diversion. SKS's special Valentine's Day dinner, complete with a chocolate fondue fountain, and dance were enjoyed by the entire school community. For more on Valentine festivities, click here.
Not long after Valentine's Day, snowdrops, the first flowers of spring, were spotted on the Mountain. They serve as a little hint that spring is on the way.
The Office of Admission cordially invites prospective students and their families to attend an Open House. All Open Houses begin in Orr Commons in the center of campus (follow signs) at 10:00 AM promptly. After brief welcoming remarks, you will tour our beautiful campus and receive a description of our programs. You will see a short video and participate in a discussion about the application process. Closing remarks will take place about 12:00. Please call 845-534-9860 to request more information or leave your name and telephone number to register.
SKS's Priority Deadline was February 1, and the first letters of acceptance for new fall 2012 students are in the mail. Going forward, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis as long as spaces are available.

 | The Storm King School iPad Program
|
|
|
Tranquility Meets Technology
Beginning in September 2012, all students and faculty members of The Storm King School will use iPads as the primary platform for textbooks, notes, organization, and many other school functions. Together with Web 2.0 tools and applications, the iPad will serve as a hyper-notebook and textbook in which students read their assignments, highlight and take notes both in class and on their own, and complete many parts of their homework.
Shortly after Apple announced its move to make iPad the textbook platform of the future, Storm King's Board of Trustees voted unanimously to support a proposal by the school's administration to join this movement. In making this decision, The Storm King School has chosen to be part of the vanguard of schools using technology to better prepare students for college and life in the 21st Century. The college preparatory school has long been known for its academics, arts, and athletics, in ad dition to its spectacular location in the Hudson Highlands. On the shoulder of Storm King Mountain, between Black Rock Forest and the Hudson River, Storm King will now expand beyond its 6000-acre Classroom into the virtual world, as tranquility meets technology at The Storm King School.

 | Students and Faculty Exchange Views on World Events
|
| |
Discussions Provide a Venue for Global Reflections
Every Friday during lunch, a group of about ten seniors and a few faculty members take their lunch trays into the Smidt Conference Room to discuss world issues. Students or faculty members suggest topics throughout the week, based on their interests or current news, and then one issue is chosen so that participants can research as time allows. The group, including Head of School Ms. "Steevie" Chinitz, faculty members, and a rotating group of students, has discussed North Korea, nuclear proliferation, labor rights and working conditions, human rights, the Vietnam War, Syria, the Arab Spring/Fall, voting, and other topics.
SKS students hail from seventeen countries; the global perspectives they offer create a dynamic discussion in which students draw upon their own diverse experiences and think critically about their peers' and teachers' perspectives. Senior Nick Q offered, "I find the discussions extremely stimulating because I can hear the opinions of other kids, both American and international. They are very interesting and I respect them."

English Teacher Posts Blog Entry
"Recently, my classes of senior English, "Studies in Genre," studied how to integrate other people's words into their own writing through quotations, paraphrasing, and summary as they began to write their own papers using secondary sources . . . the students learned that even these dry subjects have the potential for real significance outside the classroom. In talking about the ellipsis, the three dots used to indicate that words have been taken out of a quote, we ended up discussing the ethics of changing other people's words and perhaps even taking them out of context to suit your own argument. This conversation ended up reminding several students of a politician who had recently taken an opponent's words out of context. This use of ellipsis in the real world allowed the politician to paint a negative picture of his opponent. Politics is always a goldmine for discussions of the real-world effects of rhetoric and grammar."

 | A Winter Evening of One-Act Plays
|

Students Direct Seven Plays
The Second Annual Student-Directed "Winter One Acts" were performed the weekend of February 24th in SKS's Walter Reade, Jr., Theatre. The show consisted of s e ven one-act plays, two of which were written by SKS students and five by professional playwrights, including Shel Silverstein. SKS students had chosen to direct the plays, cast their characters, direct rehearsals, arrange blocking, create costumes and props, and so on. Nineteen students acted in the plays, and four additional students helped backstage and managed lights. Faculty advisors Ms. Fulton, Mr. Heno, and Ms. Gell counseled the novice directors, who learned a lot and loved the experience of putting on their own show. Congratulations to all who contributed to this successful event!
Save the date! SKS's spring musical production, The Drowsy Chaperone, will open the weekend of May 12th.

SKS students and faculty gather on top of Storm King Mountain.
|
|
| | Founded in 1867, The Storm King School celebrates a long tradition of helping students translate potential into success as they prepare for college and meaningful lives. Through academic classes, outstanding fine and performing arts, competitive and club sports, and interesting extracurricular activities, the faculty and staff offer students in grades 8-12 opportunities to enrich themselves through learning and confidence building. For college-bound students with learning differences, a small (35 students) school-within-a-school program called The Mountain Center, offers specialized, differentiated instruction in up to four core classes. Mountain Center students are full participants in the SKS community. In addition, The Learning Center offers support to any SKS student who needs extra help with study and organizational skills. Boarding and day options are available.
