Excited, nervous chatter of students newly arrived on campus has given way to more self-assured conversations as friendships have evolved and classes and sports teams have settled into their schedules. We all relish the lush green grass, crisp fall air, and hint of fall color in trees on campus and in our scenic surroundings.
If you are interested in joining The Storm King School community, we accept applications on a rolling basis. Contact us to find out if space is available for your grade level. Please give us a call (845-534-9860) or send us an email (admissions@sks.org) to arrange a tour and interview. There is information about our upcoming Open Houses at the end of this newsletter. We look forward to seeing you!

Cougar Boosters Tutor at Community Outreach Center

Students carry lumber at a Habitat for Humanity build

Storm King's Cougar Boosters Club added a new community service component to its weekly activities. Every Wednesday afternoon, the group travels with advisor Emily Boronkay to the Center for Hope in nearby Newburgh, NY, where they tutor children in one of the area's most economically depressed neighborhoods. The Center for Hope was started by three sets of parents who lost children to street violence. They felt there needed to be an alternative to spending time in the streets for children after school, and so the Center was born. It is a non-profit organization that offers a safe place for children of all ages. The kids are all there by choice and the program is free. Currently, the Cougar Boosters are the only volunteers that come regularly, and it seems our students get just as much out of it as the kids they tutor. Ms. Boronkay says, "They love it, they're really excited about it, and it's a real confidence builder for those who sometimes feel like they have nothing to give." She continued, "As they hear these kids' stories, they will gain a perspective of how incredibly blessed they are." The Cougar Boosters are a diverse, bright, college-bound group of students and it is their "goal to give these kids a bigger vision for their own futures." Ms. Boronkay met the organization's director at a local volunteer fair and jumped at the opportunity to help.
SKS senior Amanda F. added, "It's fun! We help kids with homework support, and sometimes we play games with them. They really appreciate it."
In a separate, but related, initiative, a new weekend activities curriculum requires all students to participate in at least two scheduled weekend community service trips a year. Ms. Boronkay organizes these trips as well and has planned outings this trimester to a Special Olympics event, a Habitat for Humanity build, a hiking trail clean-up, the Walk to Fight Hunger, a Hudson River clean-up, and a Lion's Club run. Additional volunteer opportunities are already in the works for the next two trimesters.

Producer and Camera Crew Film at SKS for a Day
 | |
Chris Mendes teaches James I. about the camera he uses
| A film crew from the documentary series "Inside America" came to The Storm King School on September 27 to shoot interviews with Head of School Helen "Steevie" Chinitz, members of the faculty, and several students. The crew also shot footage of several classes, a performing arts rehearsal, a dance class, and sports practice The producer will use the footage in a short documentary (one in a series) about the benefits of independent boarding schools in America. The program will run on public television channels later this fall. In addition, a one-minute commercial will air on television and on commercial websites, such as The Wall Street Journal's website. A longer promotional video will also be made for use on the School's website and other outlets. It was an exciting action-packed day for the School. In fact, students in Mr. Frank Annunziata's filmmaking class took the opportunity to shoot the "Inside America" film crew in action. Using Flip video cameras, the students gathered "behind the scenes" footage for their own movie about the making of the documentary. The professional film crew took the young filmmakers under their wings for the day and explained what they were doing as they worked. Watch for the commercials and short documentary airing nationally later this fall.

SKS is well-known for its outstanding Performing, Visual, and Creative Arts. Every year, some of our seniors are accepted to some of the finest arts colleges and institutes in the country. These programs did not miss a beat this fall, as Intro Art students launched into preliminary studies, AP Studio Art students reviewed goals for their portfolios, students initiated or continued instrumental classes, the film-making and music studios initiated new projects, and the cast and crew of our fall theatre production began rehearsals. (There will be more about SKS's fall Shakespeare theatre production in next month's newsletter.)

Violinist and Harpist Perform for the School Community
| |
Barbara Allen's harp melodies drew accolades
|
Periodically throughout the year, SKS students have the unique opportunity to meet world-renowned musicians and attend private performances through The Storm King School's Performing Arts Program. Barbara Allen, principal harpist for the American Ballet Theater Orchestra and the Greenwich Symphony, performed for students and faculty on Friday, September 16th. Storm King's own Artist-in-Residence Jim Rensink arranged the concert and accompanied Ms. Allen on piano. They performed "Aria" by Marcel Grandjany, the Handel Harp Concerto, and a jazz piece called "10 After 2" by Allen's teacher at The Juilliard School. Ms. Allen has performed with the New York Philharmonic and has appeared with many of the world's top orchestras and conductors. She won second prize in the Seventh International Harp Competition held in Israel and recently appeared on the Today Show. In addition to awing students and faculty with her performance, Ms. Allen also provided a brief lesson on the harp and took questions from the audience. She said that she had met her two professional goals in life--to have her name printed on a program for Lincoln Center in New York City and to perform with Sting. On September 27th, violinist Sheryl Staples, Principal Associate Concertmaster for the New York Philharmonic, performed with Storm King's Artist-in-Residence Jim Rensink. The brief concert featured the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. Students described the concert as "fantastic" and applauded her "amazing fingers!" | |

SKS students and faculty gather on top of Storm King Mountain
|
|
| | Founded in 1867, The Storm King School celebrates a long tradition of helping students translate potential into success as they prepare for college and meaningful lives. Through academic classes, outstanding fine and performing arts, competitive and club sports, and interesting extracurricular activities, the faculty and staff offer students in grades 8-12 opportunities to enrich themselves through learning and confidence building. For college-bound students with learning differences, a small (35 students) school-within-a-school program called The Mountain Center, offers specialized, differentiated instruction in up to four core classes. Mountain Center students are full participants in the SKS community. In addition, The Learning Center offers support to any SKS student who needs extra help with study and organizational skills. Boarding and day options are available.
