While students, parents, and school folk alike treasure the remaining days of summer, preparations have been under way for a dynamic new school year. The Admissions staff is excited about the quality and diversity of returning and newly-enrolled students. The Academic Dean is pleased about new course offerings and well-credentialed faculty. The Dean of Students has revised the Student/Parent Handbook, called The Crest, to reflect policies that will serve the community well. Teachers are enthusiastically outlining curriculum and lesson plans.

If you are interested in joining The Storm King School community, we accept applications on a rolling basis. Contact us to find out if space is available for your grade level. Please give us a call (845-534-9860) or send us an email (admissions@sks.org) to arrange a tour and interview.  We look forward to seeing you!

Students Plant Vegetables and Flowers

Greenhouse Club's Garden is Yielding Great Results

Students plant

Biology teacher Jim Uhlig has for years involved his classes in planting activities in the classroom and after-school campus beautification projects. SKS is fortunate to have a greenhouse, which was dedicated to Head of School Steevie Chinitz in 2008 in recognition of her passion for education and the environment.

This past spring, Mr. Uhlig and Greenhouse Club students installed a garden. First, they installed a deer-proof fence and raised beds and then planted seedlings that they had started in the greenhouse. Mr. Uhlig said, "It was fun how different students involved themselves in different aspects of the project. Some put their shoulders into the hard work of digging holes for fence posts. Others enjoyed choosing which vegetables and flowers to plant." Strawberries were the first to show fruit. The spring lettuce was enjoyed in the dining hall, and its bed has now been replaced by pumpkins, basil, cucumbers, and rhubarb. The garden is producing watermelon, cantaloupes, tomatoes, and peppers, whilestudents tend plants sunflowers and zinnia decorate campus offices. It will be fun for students returning to campus to see how much their seedlings have grown and produced!

Meanwhile, across campus in celebration of Earth Day this spring, students helped College Counselor Jim Leppla and Admissions Officer and Master Gardener Toni Scherrer plant annual flowers to fill in beds of perennials and shrubs. Throughout the summer months, Toni and SKS staff have kept the beds free of weeds and well watered, so the students can see the results of their efforts when they return in the fall.

Gaining Independence at an Independent School

Lily in hallLily S's first contact with SKS came about reluctantly. One Saturday morning when she was in 8th grade, her mother woke her and said they were going to attend an Open House. Lily's response was, "No!" but her mother persisted. Afterward, as she climbed into the car, she exclaimed, "I love this school!"

Teachers at SKS offer a personal and supportive approach. "At Storm King, she is allowed to think for herself, encouraged to create her own ideas, and taught to express herself," Lily's mother said. "She is treated more like a college student. There is mutual respect." Lily echoed that sentiment: "I can't believe how different my relationships with my teachers are than at previous schools. Here I am comfortable eating dinner with my teachers. I email and telephone my teachers at home. I wasn't invited to do that before."

The independence that students develop at SKS extends beyond academics. "I have been surprised at how important art is," Lily's mom said. "Lily was a very rigid book learner. She tended to give the safe answer. Her art teacher, through the use of journaling, has pulled out of her other ways to interpret things. It gives her an entirely different view. Her writing changed. It took the fear factor out of being wrong."

There are numerous opportunities for leadership at Storm King. "When Mr. Meisel spoke about forming a Provisional Community Government, I knew that I was going to be on it," Lily said. I didn't know what position to run for, but even though I am just a sophomore, I had confidence. I knew that if I didn't win, it wouldn't be a big deal because people would not laugh at me. They are there to support you." Lily ran for-and won-the position of President.Lily painting

"I've changed so much at Storm King. As a person, I'm much more independent. If I had a problem with a teacher before, I went straight to my mom. Now I go to the teacher. I've learned to think outside the box, to express myself, and to trust my own ideas and creativity. Before I paid attention to what others were wearing. No one here follows what others are wearing. Everyone values individual thinking and we are encouraged to create our own ideas. We think for ourselves."

Founded in 1867, The Storm King School celebrates a long tradition of helping students translate potential into success as they prepare for college and meaningful lives. Through academic classes, outstanding fine and performing arts, competitive and club sports, and interesting extracurricular activities, the faculty and staff offer students in grades 8-12 opportunities to enrich themselves through learning and confidence building. For college-bound students with learning differences, a small (35 students) school-within-a-school program called The Mountain Center, offers specialized, differentiated instruction in up to four core classes. Mountain Center students are full participants in the SKS community. In addition, The Learning Center offers support to any SKS student who needs extra help with study and organizational skills. Boarding and day options are available.
