In this section, we share updates on family members who have attended our Healing Retreat Programs.

Taylor was one of the participants at our 2nd Healing Retreat in July of 2010.  Taylor is a remarkable eighteen year old girl whose  youngest  brother Kevin was diagnosed with Autism around age 3.

On October 16th, Taylor spoke at our Butterfly Gala Benefit in Chicago about her time during the retreat and how it helped her, her family and Kevin.   She spoke on how the retreat gave Taylor the perspective to shift from a focus on "her brother and the diagnosis" to a focus on herself; something she had not done in 15 years!  She  remembers how the therapists at the retreat "celebrated the skills she had learned by being the older sibling of a special needs sibling... and that, she says has propelled her forward toward excellence!"  The retreat, for her also reinforced her desire to work with children as she sets out to plan a career and college in the coming years.

In her brothers, Scott and Kevin, she noticed changes as well.  The most significant was with her brother Kevin; "Kevin grew before everyone's eyes that week.  He started the week removed from the group, choosing to wander around the trees off to the side.  By week's end, he would physically place himself with the other kids, and showed amazing interest in the younger children.  He bonded with a few of the respite workers and therapists, and one respite worker was so moved by the transformation that she is now pursuing her certificate in massage therapy."

Taylor, her mom and brother (Scott) all plan on returning this summer to help our next set of families during their transformative week at the upcoming retreat.  It is a natural cycle for this community; it keeps giving.  We will be thrilled to see you out there again this year!

Thank you Taylor for sharing your personal story and your bravery to speak to a crowd of more than 100.  We, as a community, can't wait to see what is next for you--I'm sure it will be nothing less than spectacular!

Donor Spotlight

Ingrid Peters

This month's Donor Spotlight goes to Ingrid Peters

Ingrid deserves much recognition as the largest individual donor the evening of  our October 16th Butterfly Gala event in Chicago at the East Bank Club.  A good friend to Marlys Beider, (Shay's fabulous Mother-in law) she has watched the expansion of Integrative Touch for Kids from it's inception and feels proud of the work and
growth that has come over the
last few years.

Ingrid has always loved working with children; with six children of her own she has volunteered many hours in their schools and extracurricular activities.  After moving here from Germany in her 20s, she says that she loves the level of involvement in the schools and children's programs that we have here in the United States.  Ingrid currently spends much of her time now spoiling her eight grandchildren and
traveling to the Bahamas!

Thank You Ingrid

for your generosity and heartfelt  involvement in providing opportunities for more families and children.

You are what keeps us growing!

Matrix Energetics

Judith Joy

Life is about possibilities and the choices we make from them.  We start with all the possibilities and as we make these choices, the possibilities collapse into the choices that we've made.  Matrix Energetics (ME) is about increasing the possibilities allowing us to make new and better choices.  This sounds difficult, but in reality it is easy and every one of us is doing this every day.

We each live our lives from the rules that work for us.  These rules are developed over our lifetimes from family, society, and personal experiences.  However, what worked for us at two years old, may not work for us as adults. Matrix Energetics is a focused way to pay attention to what is and what could be.  We don't have to stay stuck in the old way.  We can allow for new, better possibilities to come forward.

The clue is to pay attention to your own senses and thoughts.  Then, drop into the heart field and notice what you notice.  From this vantage point, you can choose to allow new possibilities using one of the many techniques Matrix Energetics teaches.  It works especially well if you can let go of being attached to a particular outcome. When you combine your thoughts with your feelings the whole world opens to you...if you pay attention.

Once the energy is shifted, it is important to notice what is different.  The difference may appear to be related to the intention that was stated at the beginning of the Matrix session.  Or it may be in any area of your life...job, body, situation, feelings, etc.

At the end of a Matrix session, you will feel relaxed and calm.  It is simple, and anyone can learn it.

Community Member Spotlight

   Kelly Greene

This month's Comunity Member Spotlight goes to Kelly Greene!  Kelly is an outstanding volunteer on our Tucson benefit event planning committee. She and her husband, Scott, own several businesses in town including the computer software development company Great Scott Enterprises and other companies in IT and forensics. They also manage over 400 rental units in the Tucson area. The Greene's have four awesome children, Brandon, Sean, Sydney, and Blake.

The family was approached by Joe Cristiani to donate the use of their Puerto Penasco home as an auction item in last year's Butterfly Gala Event. Kelly remembers attending the event and being quite struck by Logan Lee's speech. She was transformed by ITK's healing retreat and was moved by the immense dedication Shay had for these children and families. She understood the goals of Integrative Touch for Kids and wondered what else she could do to help. It wasn't until the following September when she was invited to a Friends of ITK mixer that she found the perfect opportunity.  ITK needed help planning the next Butterfly Gala event and it just so happens that Kelly really loves to decorate and throw fun parties! Kelly says, "I felt excited that they needed someone to help put together the event."

Kelly is the February 5th, 2011, Tucson Butterfly Gala Venue and Decor Chair. She has recently been thinking about starting a company that specilizes in the planning of non-profit events. Kelly feels that there is a need for a company that can throw a fabulous party, paying attention to detail and cost without losing the message for the program.  We are very blessed to have Kelly on board with us because she brings so many of her special talents to ITK.

If you have not yet purchased your Tucson Butterfly Gala Tickets, don't wait another day! Click here and get on the list. It's going to be quite the party!

Letter from the Editor

Butterfly Gala - bottomAs our new year is set to begin, we find ourselves taking stock in what last year has yielded. For Integrative Touch for Kids, the community has seen an incredible second retreat, the formation of many outreach programs such as Friends of ITK, and connections to many new donors, volunteers and board members, all intent on bringing us closer to our realized goals of helping more families in all communities around the country.  Below we bring you information from our Chicago Benefit Event this last October, news of the exciting momentum and work being done for our upcoming 3rd Healing Retreat in June 2011, and links to the sketches done for our very own Healing Retreat Center.

2010 was an amazing year and 2011 promises to push us even further along the path of our dreams.  Our ITK Family wishes you Happy Holidays with the ones you love and a Beautiful New Year!

Happy New Year!
MOMENTUM is the word for Integrative Touch for Kids for the New Year! We have so many wonderful new people joining us and such incredible momentum building for us this year. I would like to take a moment to share a few of our goals for 2011...
We are thrilled to announce that we will be expanding our programs this year to include a new mini retreat. These mini retreats will be held in addition to our week long healing retreat program for kids with special health needs and their families this summer. We are overjoyed to try out this new format and learn how it can benefit more families and children.
We will be expanding our highly successful 'Friends of ITK' mixers that were launched in Tucson to two new communities-the Chicago and San Franciso areas. This will be a great leap forward as we continue to broaden our scope into the New Year.
We've been working on creative ways to provide added resources and opportunities for our fabulous healing arts practitioners who so enrich our communities. Stay tuned for new educational, programmatic, and outreach platforms to spotlight our terrific providers. Along with these additions, we are launching community educational outreach events for children and families to further our reach and provide new networks of support.

And these are just a few highlights!
With your participation, we are growing leaps and bounds. THANK YOU for your incredible dedication in 2010. Where will we go in 2011? As my daughter would say, "To infinity and beyond!"

With love and delight,

Shay Beider

Corner Bar Olympics

Our fearless leader
gets into the game!

The Foothills Club of Tucson held it's 1st ever 'Corner Bar Olympics', raising money and awareness for Integrative Touch for Kids. The event was a huge success raising twice the amount originally projected and so much fun was had along the way! We are extremely grateful for our relationship with the Foothills Club. This group of wonderful people has made an enormous difference for the children and families that we serve.

We extend a very special thank you to Larry

Healthy Tips for...

       Healthy Living

Natural First Aid right at your finger tips. In your kitchen and around the house.  Remedies to have handy for life's ups and downs.

All the supplies needed are underlined throughout...

In the spirit of keeping the holiday season alive throughout the year, the most important things to add to your first aid kit are large doses of:

Faith: in the vitality and wisdom of your body and spirit.
Compassion and Love: to show comfort and support.
Graditude:  for life's blessings even in challenging times.

Burns:
1.       Aloe Vera  Gel: fresh or bottled applied topically.
2.     Calendula: wound healer (good for burns and many other skin issues such as cuts, rashes, dried feet and elbows, etc.). Salve or succus used topically.

Ear aches:

1.       Garlic Clove: peel one "toe" of garlic and boil in a small pot of water until tender (not mushy).  Cool and place on affected ear (do NOT force into ear canal), cover with clean cotton.  Change daily.  Garlic will draw out the infection.

Indigestion:

1.       Ginger Root

a.       Fresh (store in Freezer): Peeled and grated.  Make into tea or cook with it (great in Asian dishes).

b.      Dried and candied = a chewy treat.

2.       Pineapple and Papaya: both digestive enzymes. Eat fresh or dried.

Immune Boosters (preventative or during infection):

1.       Magic Socks: 1 pair thin Cotton socks and 1 pair Wool socks

a.   Wet thin cotton socks in cold water, wring out ALL excess water.

b. Ensure feet are warm (take warm shower or hot foot bath if necessary)

c. Put on Cold cotton socks.  Put wool socks on over, completely covering cold socks.

d. Go to sleep, You will have a deep restful sleep and your immune system will do its job, while your body warms and dries the cold socks.

**Discontinue if you wake chilled, and warm feet immediately.

    2.
ADD Garlic and Onions especially in soups.

3.       AVOID Sugar.  Sugar depresses the immune system.

Headache:

1.       Water:  drink lots in between meals (avoid drinking while eating).

2.       Rest and Relaxation:  stress and lack of sleep are major causes of headaches.

3.       Rosemary:  Increases circulation.

Sore Throats:

1.       Lemon and Honey Tea: Boil water and squeeze in fresh lemon and honey.  Drink hot/warm.

2.       Salt water gargle.

Sore Muscles and Bruises:

1.       Arnica: salve slathered on affected area.

2.       Vitamin C for bruising (citrus and all fruits, broccoli, carrots, etc.).

3.       Magnesium (Mg) for muscle cramps (Almonds, beans, bananas, carrot, chard, raisins, etc.).

Sprains or Breaks:

1.       Comfrey Root:  also known as "bone knit." Poultice applied over affected area and changed 2-3 times a day.

Stuffy Nose (allergies, sinus blockage, colds, etc.):

  1. AVOID all dairy products: milk, cheese, yogurt, cream cheese, sour cream, etc.  Dairy promotes mucus production.
  2. Netti pot with Saline (salt) rinse.  Cleanse nasal passages.

Warts:

  1. Vitamin E oil:  apply topically to wart until gone.
