Testimonials from our June 2010 Retreat

We asked our attending families from the June 2010 Retreat to name one thing that has changed in their lives since their week with us.  Here's what they had to say:

Kooy/Codel Family - "We have been busy since our time at the Retreat."  Liz and Adrian spoke at a National Down's Syndrome Conference in Orlando on managing a child with multiple health problems.  "We spoke of our time at the Retreat and everyone felt either jealous or excited to attend one themselves.  Zane still talks about his Yoga classes and has checked some books out on it from the library.  Adrian has been reading up on Reiki and Cael continues to smile and laugh more than he ever has.  Liz has been swimming and remembers her time fondly."  The best news, however, is that they are expecting another child in early February.  Congratulations! They look forward to seeing everyone in Chicago this October 16th, as they join us for the Chicago Butterfly Gala.

Peckler Family - They are truly thankful for their amazing gift of attending the retreat. They have written a lovely letter to be shared at our Chicago Benefit stating how they were given their family back, whole and able to take on whatever comes their way!

Lee Family - "Our whole perspective has changed." They have incorporated yoga and meditation into their daily lives which helps them to manage stress.  Micha has started massage school to continue to provide these benefits for her family and give back to others in need.  "The World is a lot brighter now. Our Retreat taught us that complete strangers can come together and truly open their hearts to be there for one another. It is a beautiful thing!"

The Cohen Family- "The ITK Retreat allowed us to experience, as a unit, the stresses of being a special needs family, and clearly showed us how much stronger we are together.  We found comfort in helping each other, and pride in watching each person experience the opportunities afforded us.  And we all learned, by spending a week with all the other kids with different special needs, to get beyond initial appearances, fears or beliefs, and relate to the complete and wonderful person that each child is."

Carolyn and Analyssa King-  "Ani and I were very much exposed to alternative health practices prior to attending the Retreat. However, attending that week with the ITK community has been a catalyst for Ani to take the reins for her own life.  It was another level of confirmation that has allowed Ani to blossom since June."  She has started a new High school, and has been modeling for Divaz, a fundraising fashion show for the disabled.  Through this program she is learning weekly how to model down the runway and has done a photo shoot which will be part of a calendar being sold to support the organization.  On top of that she is also taking part in theatre productions with Invisible theatre!  Truly amazing. Carolyn has been busy opening a new studio and is in the process of putting some art pieces together for ITK that will be auctioned at the Chicago and Tucson Benefit Events - Thank you Carolyn!  They also continue to see some of the other local families from time to time. To everyone out there who attended the Retreat, Ani shouts out a big--Hey Bagel!!

We are excited to introduce you to Dana Sackar, an amazing Craniosacral therapist who is also trained in physical therapy. She is one of our most valuable Chicago Events Committee members and has joined our team for the past several years.  Dana has generously helped Integrative Touch for Kids through her event planning skills, monetary gifts and generous spirit.

Dana and her husband David helped immensely last year by assisting with airfare for one of the families who attended our healing retreat. This generous gift helped a family fly in from Chicago to take part in our program. The family would not otherwise have been able to attend. Dana's selfless and giving spirit has touched the lives of children in our community.

Why does Dana give so generously to our community? "I believe it to be a good cause, I also appreciate that everyone experiences trauma differently and feel it is so wonderful that ITK addresses the family in addition to the child and how powerful the impact can be as a whole."  It's so wonderful that you recognize the impact on the entire family Dana, and have such a kind and loving spirit! It is a privilege to have you involved in Integrative Touch for Kids. You are a fundamental part of our community.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Imagine finding a way to overcome fear and develop confidence in a matter of a few hours! The Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) does just that!  It involves a mental health professional, a horse specialist and one or more horses.   Individuals or families accomplish tasks, learn confidence, and how to communicate more clearly.

Horses have a very social nature.  Like us, they have distinct personalities and attitudes.  Being nonverbal, they mirror back the behaviors and body language that we ourselves present.  If you respect them they respect you.  If you show up with an attitude it will be hard to get them to do the task you were assigned.  Working with horses takes self-reflection and a willingness to make necessary changes.

Horses do not judge. They accept diversity and are very intuitive.  Working with these four-legged therapists helps you learn about yourself, what you may be projecting. This helps you come up with creative solutions to real life situations. Metaphors are woven throughout the session in order to represent other things that may be going on in one's life.  A discussion is held after each session where family members are able to identify feelings, patterns, and behaviors they can be holding them back.

This summer at ITK's Retreat, all the families were given the opportunity to work together as a team by participating in equine assisted therapy, facilitated by Peggy Holt-a behavioral therapist and Board Memeber for ITK. As a fun activity for the kids, a few of the horses allowed us to gently paint them every color of the rainbow. Learning essential social skills while having fun in a non-judgmental atmosphere, that is the beauty of Equine Therapy.

I Thought I Was Giving But I Have Been Receiving All Along

I feel so privileged to sit in the position that I do and see the incredible people and momentum that are uniting to further the work of Integrative Touch for Kids. There is no way to adequately express my gratitude for each and every person who is called in to help, but I will try. Without each one of you, we would not be creating a new model of health and healing for families with children with special health needs. We would not be able to pioneer a new service model that can change how children and families are treated. We would not be creating networks of support that help families to weather the many challenges they face when their child is hospitalized yet again. We would not be developing new therapeutic approaches that can literally change the way we interact with children and families to support their healing processes. We would not be publishing, lecturing, and teaching about this work and sharing it with others. Most importantly perhaps, as a community we would not be transformed by this service work. That is the wonder of this; we set out to help others and in the process become completely transformed ourselves. Thank you for your willingness to be a part of this transformation. These unique relationships with children and families offer us a wonderful gift...as we step forward to give, we receive an infinite amount from each child and from each family in return. In seeing one another with depth and sincerity, we are all changed for the better. And that is the beauty of an integrated and expanded community, we are all enhanced by having relationships with one another.
With love and delight,

Healthy Tips for...
Healthy Living
You've got to Move It Move It
Some of the most fun times at the 2010 retreat involved moving our bodies...  The post-dinner soccer games on the lawn were fun for all!  They were a time when adults and kids could all get together, on or off the field. Families bonded over the friendly competition :) At the family swimming social, everyone got to cool off and horse around in the refreshing pool water.  Speaking of horses, walks to the horses and around Rex Ranch were a great way to take a break, catch up, and share our experiences.  We also enjoyed dancing to the primitive beats of the drum jams and stretching our bodies in new fun ways with yoga.

Facts about Movement and Exercise:

  • 20 minutes a day 2-6 times a week is all the Exercise you need to keep in shape.
  •  After only 11 minutes of exercise, you get benefits.
  • Exercise can improve your Mood with the release of endorphins, dopamine, serotonin and adrenaline, which make you feel good.
  • Movement allows relaxation and stress relief by decreasing cortisol (the bodies "Stress" hormone).
  • Exercise increases energy and fights fatigue better than prescription drugs.
  • Weight bearing exercise promotes strong bones and helps prevent osteoporosis.

Exercise Ideas:
  • Walking, hiking and running:  simple and perfect
  • Yoga:  customize poses for your unique situation and needs...  this helps with relaxation, digestion, detox, pain relief, strength, flexibility, etc. etc...
  • Swimming: beat the summer heat and get in shape. Remember to rinse off after using chlorinated pools.
  • Dancing: Put on your favorite music and have a dance party, or join a class; tap, hip-hop, zumba, salsa, belly dancing...  the possibilities are endless.
  • Sports:  Inter-mural, school, pick-up games. baseball, soccer, volleyball, track, football, handball, racket ball, tennis anyone...
  • Martial Arts: Lots of options from Tia Chi to Karate, and many more.
  • Horseback riding:  outdoors and animals -  who could ask for more :)
Everyone enjoys something different... Whether you use exercise to get in some social time or  some quiet time alone to reflect.  Whether you get outdoors and take in fresh air and sun, or in the protection of the indoors and air conditioning.  Find the exercise that is right for you and Move It!

Butterfly Gala - bottom Rachelle Lee
This month's spotlight is of a woman who epitomizes Integrative Touch for Kids Community Vision. Rachelle Lee came to ITK, along with her family pictured above, as one of our inaugural retreat recipients. Whether through divine intervention, the stars in alignment or the correct Chi balance, Rachelle found herself on the computer one day looking up information on Living Donors for Liver transplants for her son Logan who has been diagnosed with congenital hepatic (liver) fibrosis, an autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease and somehow her Internet search brought up the Integrative Touch for Kids website.

Rachelle immediately felt that she and her family needed to get involved and she contacted Shay for more information.  Rachelle and her family's experience at the 1st retreat was nothing short of life changing. She states that because of the retreat, her family is stronger and more bonded then they have ever been despite the struggles they continue to face with Logan's health. Rachelle says that one of the most healing aspects of their weeklong stay was being in a community free of the outside world--a community where they were just another family dealing with the same types of things everyone else was. "The inter-family bonds gave us our hope back. We were suddenly a normal family in the scheme of things, who could then focus just on healing and bonding together".  She continues to stay in touch with many of the families from that first retreat.

Her son, Logan continues to receive massage, Reiki and Sound Therapy to help him through his hospital procedures.  Events that used to take days in the hospital are now same-day procedures with a marked decrease in the need for pain medications. His physician has become a fan of Integrative Touch for Kids! Logan is not the only one to receive therapies though; the rest of the family has enjoyed massage and done a lot with meditation and positive thinking.  It has made all the difference in the world!

The entire family has had many positive changes since that first retreat, and truth be told, I could write an article on each family member and their journey since joining us in '09. Rachelle and Logan have been integral volunteers for the community since their stay with ITK. Logan and Rachelle joined the Tucson Benefit Event Committee last year, and along with husband Ty, they were available the entire week of the 2010 Retreat. They wanted to help in whatever way was necessary to provide for other families. Rachelle says that both retreat experiences were invaluable in their own way and feels like she couldn't pick which one she enjoyed more.

Rachelle's story doesn't stop here; since returning from the last retreat held at Rex Ranch in Amado, she has started massage therapy school.  She says she thought about it for years, but during the Healing Retreat she had the opportunity to witness some of the sessions with practitioners as they helped the children and provided a safe place for them to receive therapeutic touch.  She watched the transformation of one particular child who initially wanted nothing to do with massage, a child who felt sensory overload by another's touch. The child was suddenly reaching out for a hand to massage him as the week progressed and was connecting with others in an entirely new way.  Rachelle felt so moved by this evolution and acceptance she immediately felt that this was what she needed to be doing herself.  She is joined at school by Micha Lee, a relative and one of the recipient families who attended this year's Healing Retreat.

Rachelle has been married to her husband Ty for 17 years. They met through a cousin and have 3 boys, James (21), Stephen (17), and Logan (14).  Stephen also attended our first healing retreat and found during the course of that week that he has an amazing gift with horses. Stephen has continued to volunteer and work out at the White Stallion Ranch since his time at the retreat.

Rachelle has been working in the TUSD school system as a Health Aide for the last 5 years, so she is no stranger to children and their needs for acceptance.  She will no doubt be an incredible addition to our staff of volunteer Healing Arts Practitioners!  We look forward to your graduation in July and look forward to seeing what comes next for you. Thank you Rachelle for your amazing contribution to this organization.  You are a shining example of what we can accomplish when we open our hearts!
