Getting Involved

Ways to Support Children
There are a number of meaningful ways to become involved in positively supporting the populations we serve. This year we will be holding an annual benefit in October in Chicago, IL and in the spring of 2009 we will be holding our 1st annual benefit in Tucson, Arizona. If you would like to become involved in either event, please contact us. We are looking for sponsors to help underwrite the costs of the benefits so that all the monies raised can go directly to the programs and services provided.  We are also on the "look out" for a range of wonderful items to include in our silent auction. If you or someone you know has a donation for the auction, please be in touch! Donations of your time and services are always greatly appreciated. In the coming months we'll be bringing together groups of healers, philanthropists, and parents of children with special needs to begin disucssing our vision for the healing retreat center. If you would like to participate in these conversations, please contact us. There are so many ways to become involved and so many ways to support the families we serve!

HEALING RETREAT CENTER
Desert Photo

Integrative Touch for Kids is committed to creating a first of its kind healing retreat center for children with special needs and their families in Tucson, Arizona. The center will use a whole systems approach to health and healing and will provide a supportive environment for families to rest, rejuvenate and heal. The center will be unique in that it will provide a range of integrative healing therapies along with appropriate medical supervision and care. This is a multi-stage, multi-year project beginning with a pilot program and expanding into a state of the art healing retreat center for families from around the world. The creation of the new healing retreat center is an extension of Integrative Touch for Kids' original vision to bring gentle nurturing touch to children. The goal is to create an environment where the best practices in integrative medicine can be explored and direct feedback from families and children with special needs is obtained. The center will serve as a model for other programs internationally and will provide education to providers who wish to implement integrative medicine programs for children in a range of different environments.

This project is in the initial stages of development and will require the support of small donors, philanthropists, healers, families, and activists for children's causes nationally and internationally to bring it to completion. With vision, guidance, and support, we have an opportunity together to change the world!

The Benefits of Touch
Research has shown that pediatric massage for children with special needs significantly reduces their anxiety and pain.
This is particularly important in medical environments where children can be very frightened. Imagine if you will the universe within a children's hospital as seen through the eyes of its littlest patients. It is an environment unlike what exists in the world at large-a scary place for sure. When you add to the mix the reality that children often have to undergo treatments that they cannot fully understand and that it can feel to them that things are happening against their own wishes, this can be a recipe for despair. There are many wonderful people in hospitals who do everything they can to minimize the fear, anxiety, and trauma that can result from necessary medical procedures, but this isn't always enough to alleviate children's suffering. A story that has stayed with me for many years is the story of an 18 year old boy that I met in a children's hospital. His parents brought him to a workshop I was conducting on the benefits of touch and massage. He had been hospitalized as an infant for nearly three years and ever since was very apprehensive to be touched by anyone. His parents were deeply concerned that this would scar him for the rest of his life. I explained the importance of touching respectfully, asking permission, and only working in ways that the recipient was completely comfortable with. I also showed a little hand massage demonstration. After the demonstration, the young man came up to me and asked if I would teach him the strokes that I was doing on his hand. I gently took his hand and began to do some simple massage techniques. As his parents watched on behind him, I saw tears in their eyes. It had been so long since he had allowed anyone to touch him. Trauma can leave deep imprints on our psyche and our body. Imprints that can last a life time if we don't actively seek out healing therapies and ways to release suffering. It is for this reason that we are doing everything we can to bring a wide range of healing therapies to children with special needs and their families. We all deserve opportunities for lasting healing. Healing is unique in that it lives beyond curing and fixing and touches us in deep and sometimes inexplicable ways. It is through this process that we gain new insights and depth and are able to make meaning of our suffering.

We want to thank you for all of your support! It is through the commitment of each person who extends themself to support this effort that we are able to grow. For this, we are deeply grateful.

As 12 year old AIDS activist Nkosi Johnson said, "Do all you can with what you have, in the time you have, in the place you are." We believe in that philosophy and are certainly doing all we can to improve the health and healing experiences of children with special needs and their families.

Sincerely,
